Heavy mass states

Description: The indirect evidence for the production of a heavy lepton and direct evidence for the product of a new hadronic state or states in proton-proton interactions is considered for the interpretation requiring the existence of two more leptons and two new quarks. It is shown that such a picture is consistent and in good agreement with existing data. The new structure is located at M = 9.54 GeV/c/sup 2/ and is much wider than the experimental resolution. Also it is asymmetric, suggesting the presenc… more

Radiative corrections in SU/sub 2/ x U/sub 1/ LEP/SLC

Description: We show the sensitivity of various experimental measurements to one-loop radiative corrections in SU/sub 2/ x U/sub 1/. Models considered are the standard GSW model as well as extensions of it which include extra quarks and leptons, SUSY and certain technicolor models. The observation of longitudinal polarization is a great help in seeing these effects in asymmetries in e/sup +/e/sup -/ ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/, tau/sup +/tau/sup -/ on Z/sup 0/ resonance. 25 refs., 22 figs., 10 tabs.

Anomalous low mass e/sup +/e/sup -/ pair production in 17 GeV/c. pi. /sup -/p collisions

Description: An experiment was performed at the Multiparticle Spectrometer using 17 GeV/c ..pi../sup -/ from the BNL AGS, triggering upon inclusive e/sup +/e/sup -/ production. Electron identification was based on two transition radiator detectors and lead-scintillator shower detectors. Good acceptance for the e/sup +/e/sup -/ pair covered the region x/sub F/ > 0.3 for all p/sub T/ and pair masses. Charged particles and photons associated with the e/sup +/e/sup -/ pair are detected over a large solid ang… more

Measuring the mass and width of the Z sup 0 : The status of the energy spectrometers

Description: The Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) collides electrons and positrons produced in the linear accelerator pulse by pulse. The object is to produce collisions energetic enough to produce the heavy intermediate vector boson, the Z{sup 0}. An essential component of the SLC physics program is the precise knowledge of the center-of-mass energy of each interaction. We measure the energy of each collision by using two energy spectrometers. The spec… more

The P-Factor and Atomic Mass Systematics: Application to Medium Mass Nuclei

Description: The P formalism was applied to atomic mass systematics for medium and heavy nuclei. The P-factor linearizes the structure-dependent part of the nuclear mass in those regions which are free from subshell effects indicating that the attractive quadrupole p-n force plays an important role in determining the binding of valence nucleons. Where marked non-linearities occur, the P-factor provides a means for recognizing subshell closures and/or other structural features not embodied in the simple assu… more

Properties of leptons

Description: The properties of the electron, muon, tau, and their neutrinos are reviewed. Three discrepancies in our understanding of those properties are discussed: the lifetime of orthopositronium, the mass spectra of e{sup +}e{sup -} pairs produced in heavy ion collisions, and the 1-charged particle modes problem in tau decays. The review concludes with a discussion of what we need to learn about the tau and the consequent need for a tau-charm factory. 68 refs., 7 figs., 8 tabs.

The q q meson states with J sup PC = 2 sup ++ and 0 sup ++

Description: The lowest mesons made up of a light quark and a strange quark produced from a K beam show a good agreement with expectations of the quark model. This good agreement leads to the prediction of the light isoscalar and isovector states and the isoscalar s{bar s} states. Except for one mystery The X(1590) the 2{sup ++} states seems to be well described by the expected ideally mixed q{bar q} states up to 2. 0 GeV. Above 2.0 GeV a new degree of freedom seems to be excited with respect to the breakdo… more

Top quark and light Higgs scalar mass bounds in no-scale supergravity

Description: No-scale supergravity theories with the minimal low-energy particle content are shown to become untenable for a top quark mass m/sub T/ much less than 40 GeV. For m/sub T/ < 55 GeV, a stringent upper bound operates on the mass of the lowest-lying Higgs scalar. Further, the Higgs pseudoscalar is constrained to be nearly a quarter as massive as the gluino.

Electron-positron physics at 1 TeV

Description: We discuss the motivation for TeV e/sup +/ e/sup )minus/) linear colliders, some aspects of their design, and the experimental consequences that follow from the design. After a brief discussion of the general physics environment, we consider the discovery potential of these colliders by examining three sample processes: the detection of new heavy leptons, standard Higgs bosons, and charged Higgs bosons. 13 refs., 22 figs., 5 tabs.

Cabibbo current and CP violation in a six quark gauge model

Description: The extended Cabibbo current in a six quark gauge model is obtained in terms of Eulerian angles theta/sub c/, phi and psi which are functions of quark mass ratios and phases in the quark mass matrices. Particular attention is paid to arbitrary phases that lead to CP violation. In the limit m/sub u//m/sub c/ ..-->.. 0 there is no CP violation for parallel ..delta..S parallel = 1 processes. Some phenomenological results of the model are discussed.

Double-mode pulsation

Description: Double mode pulsation is a very pervasive phenomenon in stars all over the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. In order of increasing radius, examples are: ZZ Ceti stars, the sun, the delta Scuti stars, RR Lyrae variables, the ..beta.. Cephei variables and those related to them, Cepheids, and maybe even the Mira stars. These many modes have been interpreted as both radial and nonradial modes, but in many cases the actual mode has not been clearly identified. Yellow giants seem to be the most simple pu… more

Mark III results from SPEAR

Description: First results from the MARK III detector at SPEAR are presented based on 2.7 million J/psi decays. The eta/sub c/ is observed in three modes, J/psi ..-->.. ..gamma..eta/sub c/, (eta/sub c/ ..-->.. rho anti rho, eta..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/, and phi phi). Using the phi phi mode, the eta/sub c/ spin-parity is determined to be 0/sup -/. W mass and W asymmetry at CDF

Description: The lepton charge asymmetry from W decaying into a lepton and a neutrino is discussed (preliminary result). This measurement gives information on parton distribution functions at low x values. The derivation of the recently published W mass value of 79.91 {plus minus} 0.39 GeV/c{sup 2} is also presented. M{sub W} is used to set an upper limit on the top quark mass. 13 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

Limit on the Anti Nu/sub E/ Mass in Free Molecular Tritium Beta Decay

Description: The beta spectrum of the decay of free molecular tritium has been accurately measured in order to search for a finite anti nu/sub e/ mass. The final state effects in molecular tritium are accurately known and the data thus yield an essentially model independent upper limit of 29 eV on the anti nu/sub e/ mass at the 95% confidence level. 17 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

Type II successful supernovae, the anatomy of shocks: neutrino emission and the adiabatic index

Description: Hydrodynamic calculations of stellar collapse in Type II Supernova are described using a variable stiffness and compressibility for the nuclear equation of state at high density. Initial models employing a relatively small mass core with low central entropy are necessary to achieve viable shocks; near success the models are sensitive to both neutrino emission and the high density equation of state. The treatment of neutrino production and transport is sketched and recent results reported.

Direct measurements of neutrino mass

Description: Some recent developments in the experimental search for neutrino mass are discussed. New data from Los Alamos on the electron neutrino mass as measured in tritium beta decay give an upper limit of 9.3 eV at the 95% confidence level. This result is not consistent with the long-standing ITEP result of 26(5) eV within a model-independent'' range of 17 to 40 eV. It now appears that the electron neutrino is not sufficiently massive to close the universe by itself. Hime and Jelley report finding new … more

Scaling Study for SP-100 Reactor Technology

Description: In this study, we explored several ways of extending SP-100 reactor technology to higher power levels. One approach was to use the reference SP-100 pin design and increase the fuel pin length and the number of fuel pins as needed to provide higher capability. The impact on scaling of a modified and advanced SP-100 reactor technology was also explored. Finally, the effect of using alternative power conversion subsystems, with SP-100 reactor technology was investigated. One of the principal conce… more
