Implications of the measurement of the B0s Bbar0s massdifference

Description: We analyze the significant new model independent constraints on extensions of the standard model (SM) that follow from the recent measurements of the B{sup 0}{sub s} {bar B}{sup 0}{sub s} mass difference. The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B{sub s} {yields} {psi}{phi}, S{sub {psi}{phi}}, will be measured with good precision in the first year of LHC data taking, which will further constrain the parameter space of many extensions of the SM, in particular, next-to-minimal flavor violation. The CP asymmetry in semileptonic B{sub s} decay, A{sup s}{sub SL}, is also important to constrain these frameworks, and could give further clues to our understanding the flavor sector in the LHC era. We point out a strong correlation between S{sub {psi}{phi}} and A{sup s}{sub SL} in a very broad class of new physics models.

DECAY PROPERTIES OF THE E HYPERON AND E RESONANCES

Description: A sample of 2500 {Xi}{sup -} and 500 {Xi}{sup 0} hyperons, produced in {Xi}K, {Xi}K{pi}, and {Xi}K{pi}{pi} final states by K{sup -} (in H{sub 2}) at incident momenta of 1.7 to 2.7 BeV/c, has been analyzed. The data are from an exposure (K-63) of 26 events/{mu}b in the 72-inch bubble chamber; approximately 85% of the {Xi}{sup -} events and 60% of the {Xi}{sup 0} events have been analyzed. For the {Xi}, they determine the spin and decay parameters a{sub {Xi}} and {Phi}{sub {Xi}} = tan{sup -1} ({beta}{sub {Xi}}/{Gamma}{sub {Xi}}). Combining their data with 900 {Xi}{sup -} and 150 {Xi}{sup 0} events from an earlier experiment (K-72), they obtain the following results: (1) {Xi} spin - J = 1/2 favored over J = 3/2 by {approx} 2.5 standard deviations; (2) {Xi} decay parameters (assuming a{sub {Lambda}} = 0.647 {+-} 0.048) - a{sub {Xi}{sup -}} = -0.398 {+-} 0.041, {Phi}{sub {Xi}{sup -}} = 9.8{sup o} {+-} 9.0{sup o}; a{sub {Xi}{sup 0}} = -0.413 {+-} 0.104. They observe {Xi}*(1530) and {Xi}*(1817); their data are insufficient for analysis of suggested {Xi}* resonances at 1705 and 1933 MeV. They measure the {Xi}*(1530) electromagnetic mass difference {Delta}m = m({Xi}*{sup -}) = m({Xi}*{sup 0}) = 2.0 {+-} 3.2 MeV. Using data, part of which has already been described, they find for {Xi}*(1530): J {ge} 3/2 favored over J = 1/2 (the J = 1/2 hypothesis is {approx} 3.5% as probable as the J = 3/2 hypothesis); J{sup P} = 3/2{sup +} favored over 3/2{sup -} by {approx} 2.8 standard deviations. For {Xi}*(1817) decaying into {Xi}*(1530) + {pi}, the hypotheses J{sup P} = 1/2{sup +}, 1/2{sup -}, 3/2{sup -}, 5/2{sup +}, 7/2{sup -}, etc. (corresponding to {ell} = 1, 2, 0 and 2, 1 and 3, and 2 and 4, respectively) are favored over other hypotheses, but results ...

Scalar top study: Detector optimization

Description: A vertex detector concept of the Linear Collider Flavor Identification (LCFI) collaboration, which studies pixel detectors for heavy quark flavor identification, has been implemented in simulations for c-quark tagging in scalar top studies. The production and decay of scalar top quarks (stops) is particularly interesting for the development of the vertex detector as only two c-quarks and missing energy (from undetected neutralinos) are produced for light stops. Previous studies investigated the vertex detector design in scenarios with large mass differences between stop and neutralino, corresponding to large visible energy in the detector. In this study we investigate the tagging performance dependence on the vertex detector design in a scenario with small visible energy for the International Linear Collider (ILC).

Study of Y(3S, 2S)-> eta Y(1S) and Y(3S, 2S) -> pi pi- Y(1S) Hadronic Transitions

Description: We study the {Upsilon}(3S, 2S) {yields} {eta}{Upsilon}(1S) and {Upsilon}(3S, 2S) {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{Upsilon}(1S) transitions with 122 x 10{sup 6} {Upsilon}(3S) and 100 x 10{sup 6} {Upsilon}(2S) mesons collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider. We measure {Beta}[{Upsilon}(2S) {yields} {eta}{Upsilon}(1S)] = (2.39 {+-} 0.31(stat.) {+-} 0.14(syst.)) x 10{sup -4} and {Lambda}[{Upsilon}(2S) {yields} {eta}{Upsilon}(1S)]/{Lambda}[{Upsilon}(2S) {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{Upsilon}(1S)] = (1.35 {+-} 0.17(stat.) {+-} 0.08(syst.)) x 10{sup -3}. We find no evidence for {Upsilon}(3S) {yields} {eta}{Upsilon}(1S) and obtain {Beta}[{Upsilon}(3S) {yields} {eta}{Upsilon}(1S)] < 1.0 x 10{sup -4} and {Lambda}[{Upsilon}(3S) {yields} {eta}{Upsilon}(1S)]/{Lambda}[{Upsilon}(3S) {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{Upsilon}(1S)] < 2.3 x 10{sup -3} as upper limits at the 90% confidence level. We also provide improved measurements of the {Upsilon}(2S)-{Upsilon}(1S) and {Upsilon}(3S)-{Upsilon}(1S) mass differences, 562.170 {+-} 0.007(stat.) {+-} 0.088(syst.)MeV/c{sup 2} and 893.813 {+-} 0.015(stat.) {+-} 0.107(syst.)MeV/c{sup 2}, respectively.

Measurement of the Mass and Width of the Ds1(2536)+ Meson

Description: The decay width and mass of the D{sub s1}(2536){sup +} meson are measured via the decay channel D{sub s1}{sup +} {yields} D*{sup +} K{sub S}{sup 0} using 385 fb{sup -1} of data recorded with the BABAR detector in the vicinity of the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The result for the decay width is {Gamma}(D{sub s1}{sup +}) = 0.92 {+-} 0.03 (stat.) {+-} 0.04 (syst.)MeV. For the mass, a value of m(D{sub s1}{sup +}) = 2535.08 {+-} 0.01 (stat.) {+-} 0.15 (syst.)MeV/c{sup 2} is obtained. The mass difference between the D{sub s1}{sup +} and the D*{sup +} is measured to be m(D{sub s1}{sup +})-m(D*{sup +}) = 524.83 {+-} 0.01 (stat.) {+-} 0.04 (syst.)MeV/c{sup 2}, representing a significant improvement compared to the current world average. The unnatural spin-parity assignment for the D{sub s1}{sup +} meson is confirmed.

Study of J/psi pi+ pi- States Produced in B0 to J/psi pi+ pi- K^0 and B- to J/psi pi+ pi- K-

Description: We present results of a search for the X(3872) in B{sup 0} {yields} X(3872)K{sub S}{sup 0}, X(3872) {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, improved measurements of B{sup -} {yields} X(3872)K{sup -}, and a study of the J/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} mass region above the X(3872). We use 232 million B{bar B} pairs collected at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} asymmetric-energy storage rings. The results include the 90% confidence interval 1.34 x 10{sup -6} < {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} X(3872)K{sup 0}, X {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) < 10.3 x 10{sup -6} and the branching fraction {Beta}(B{sup -} {yields} X(3872)K{sup -}, X {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) = (10.1 {+-} 2.5 {+-} 1.0) x 10{sup -6}. We observe a (2.7 {+-} 1.3 {+-} 0.2) MeV/c{sup 2} mass difference of the X(3872) produced in the two decay modes. Furthermore, we find an excess of J/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} events with an invariant mass just above 4.2 GeV/c{sup 2} that is consistent with recent observations in initial state radiation events.

Charm physics at CDF II

Description: The CDF II detector has the capability of triggering on displaced tracks. Because of this ability, CDF II has accrued large samples of charged meson decays to fully hadronic final states in 64 pb{sup -1} of p{bar p} collision data gathered at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. Using initial Run II data samples, the production cross sections for J/{psi}, D{sup 0}, D{sup +}, D*{sup +} and D{sub s}{sup +} mesons have been measured. Ratios of branching ratios for Cabibbo suppressed final states and CP asymmetries in D{sup 0} meson decays have been studied. A measurement of the mass difference m(D{sub s}{sup +}) -m(D{sup +}) has been done, and a limit for the branching fraction of the FCNC D{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} decays has been set.

Precision SUSY measurements at LHC:Point 3

Description: This paper, which is one of a series, presents detailed studies of mass reconstructions and other measurements in a case study illustrating the power of the ATLAS detector to perform measurements of supersymmetric particle production. A particular point in the parameter space of the Minimal Supergravity inspired model is used. Reconstruction of gluino, sbottom and light squarks and the measurement of neutral ion mass differences is shown.

B and D mesons in lattice QCD

Description: Computational and theoretical developments in lattice QCD calculations of B and D mesons are surveyed. Several topical examples are given: new ideas for calculating the HQET parameters {bar {Lambda}} and {lambda}{sub 1}; form factors needed to determine {vert_bar}V{sub cb}{vert_bar} and {vert_bar}V{sub ub}{vert_bar}; bag parameters for the mass differences of the B mesons; and decay constants. Prospects for removing the quenched approximation are discussed.

A proper time dependent measurement of Delta M {sub D} using jet charge and soft lepton flavor tagging

Description: This thesis presents a proper time dependent measurement of the B{sup 0}{sub d} mixing frequency {Delta}M{sub d} using jet charge and soft lepton flavor tagging in p - {anti p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV. The measurement uses the inclusive e and {mu} trigger data of the CDF detector from an integrated luminosity of 91 pb{sub -1}. The proper time at decay is measured from a partial reconstruction of the B associated with the trigger lepton. The measurement of {Delta}M{sub d} yields {Delta}M{sub d} = 0.50 {+-} 0.05 {+-} 0.05 {bar h} ps{sup -1} where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The flavor tagging methods used give a measured effective efficiency {epsilon}D{sup 2} of o Jet Charge: {epsilon}D{sup 2} (0.78 + 0.12 + 0.09) % o Soft Lepton: {epsilon}D{sup 2} (1.07 + 0.09 + 0.10) % where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

First CDF II heavy flavor physics results with the silicon vertex trigger

Description: The renewed CDF II experiment recently re-started data taking. The data collected lately already provides insight in the heavy flavor capabilities of this p{bar p} experiment. As a benchmark of these possibilities we present two preliminary results: the measurement of the branching fractions BR(D{sup o} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) and BR(D{sup o} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}) relative to BR(D{sup o} {yields} K{sup {+-}} {pi}{sup {-+}}) and the measurement of the invariant mass difference between D{sub s}{sup {+-}} {yields} {phi}{pi}{sup {+-}}, {phi} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -} and D{sup {+-}} {yields} {phi}{pi}{sup {+-}}, {phi} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}. The preliminary results are BR(D{sup o} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -})/BR(D{sup o} {yields} K{sup {+-}} {pi}{sup {-+}}) = 3.37 {+-} 0.20(stat) {+-} 0.16(sys)%, BR(D{sup o} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -})/BR(D{sup o} {yields} K{sup {+-}} {pi}{sup {-+}}) = 11.17 {+-} 0.98(sys) % and {Delta}m (D{sub s} - D{sup +}) = 99.28 {+-} 0.43(stat) {+-} 0.27(sys) MeV/c{sup 2}. All results are consistent with PDG expectations.

Sfermion precision measurements at a linear collider

Description: At future e{sup +}e{sup -} linear colliders, the event rates and clean signals of scalar fermion production--in particular for the scalar leptons--allow very precise measurements of their masses and couplings and the determination of their quantum numbers. Various methods are proposed for extracting these parameters from the data at the sfermion thresholds and in the continuum. At the same time, NLO radiative corrections and non-zero width effects have been calculated in order to match the experimental accuracy. The substantial mixing expected for the third generation sfermions opens up additional opportunities. Techniques are presented for determining potential CP-violating phases and for extracting tan {beta} from the stau sector, in particular at high values. The consequences of possible large mass differences in the stop and sbottom system are explored in dedicated analyses.

'FISSION' OF MEDIUM WEIGHT ELEMENTS

Description: The fission reaction has been observed with high energy accelerator projectiles for elements as light as tantalum but has not been reported for medium weight elements. The present note presents evidence for the occurrence of reactions which are probably most properly described by the term 'fission' and which seem to occur with very small yield throughout the region where this type of reaction is only slightly exoergic or even endoergic with respect to mass balance. In the course of detailed investigation of the spallation of copper and the variation of the product yields with energy of the bombarding particle the threshold for formation of radioactive Cl{sup 38} (38-minute half-life) from elemental studied. The energetically most economical way in which Cl{sup 38} might be spallation reactions is by emission from the bombarded copper nucleus of nucleons in groups such as alpha-particles instead of single nucleons 0 The energetic requirements for the reaction Cu{sup 63}(p,pn6a)Cl{sup 38}, in which the maximum number of alpha-particles are emitted, include (1) the mass difference between the reactants and the products and (2) the excitation energy which the alpha-particles must have in order to pass over the coulombic barrier, Since the reaction is endoergic with respect to atomic masses, about 50 Mev must be supplied by the impinging proton to make up the mass difference. If the alpha-particles are considered as coming out consecutively, a value of about 50 Mev can be obtained for the coulombic requirement and thus the threshold for this spallation reaction is roughly 100 Mev.

The Final Measurement of Epsilon'/Epsilon from KTeV

Description: We present precise measurements of CP and CPT symmetry based on the full dataset of K {yields} {pi}{pi} decays collected by the KTeV experiment at FNAL. We measure the direct CP violation parameter Re({epsilon}{prime}/{epsilon}) = (19.2 {+-} 2.1) x 10{sup -4}. We find the KL-KS mass difference {Delta}m = (5265 {+-} 10) x 10{sup 6} hs{sup -1} and the K{sub S} lifetime {tau}{sub S} = (89.62 {+-} 0.05) x 10{sup -12} s. We test CPT symmetry by finding the phase of the indirect CP violation parameter {epsilon}, {phi}{sub {epsilon}} = (44.09 {+-} 1.00){sup o}, and the difference of the relative phases between the CP violating and CP conserving decay amplitudes for K {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} ({phi}{sub {+-}}) and for K {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} ({phi}{sub 00}), {Delta}{phi} = (0.29 {+-} 0.31){sup o}. These results are consistent with other experimental results and with CPT symmetry.

Measurement of the Branching Fractions of Bbar -> D** l^- nubar_l Decays in Events Tagged by a Fully Reconstructed B Meson

Description: We report a measurement of the branching fractions of {bar B} {yields} D** {ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {ell}} decays based on 417 fb{sup -1} of data collected at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} storage rings. Events are selected by fully reconstructing one of the B mesons in a hadronic decay mode. A fit to the invariant mass differences m(D{sup (*)})-m(D{sup (*)}) is performed to extract the signal yields of the different D** states. We observe the {bar B} {yields} D**{ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {ell}} decay modes corresponding to the four D** states predicted by Heavy Quark Symmetry with a significance greater than six standard deviations including systematic uncertainties.

Precision measurement of a particle mass at the linear collider

Description: Precision measurement of the stop mass at the ILC is done in a method based on cross-sections measurements at two different center-of-mass energies. This allows to minimize both the statistical and systematic errors. In the framework of the MSSM, a light stop, compatible with electro-weak baryogenesis, is studied in its decay into a charm jet and neutralino, the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle (LSP), as a candidate of dark matter. This takes place for a small stop-neutralino mass difference.

A Precision Measurement of the Ds1 (2536)+ Meson Mass and Decay Width

Description: The decay width and the mass of the D{sub s1}(2536){sup {+-}} have been measured via the decay channel D{sub s1}{sup {+-}} {yields} D*{sup {+-}}K{sub S}{sup 0} using 232 fb{sup -1} of data collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} storage ring. The result for the decay width is {Lambda}(D{sub s1}{sup {+-}}) = (1.03 {+-} 0.05 {+-} 0.12) MeV/c{sup 2}, with the first error denoting the statistical uncertainty and the second one the systematic uncertainty. For the mass, a value of m(D{sub s1}{sup {+-}}) = (2534.85 {+-} 0.02 {+-} 0.40) MeV/c{sup 2} has been obtained. The systematic error is dominated by the uncertainty on the D*{sup {+-}} mass. The mass difference between the D{sub s1}{sup {+-}} and D*{sup {+-}} has been measured to be {Delta}m = (524.85 {+-} 0.02 {+-} 0.04) MeV/c{sup 2}.

Study of di-pion Bottomonium Transitions and Search for the h_b(1P) State

Description: We study inclusive di-pion decays using a sample of 108 x 10{sup 6} {Upsilon}(3S) events recorded with the BABAR detector. We search for the decay mode {Upsilon}(3S) {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}h{sub b} (1P) and find no evidence for the bottomonium spin-singlet state h{sub b}(1P) in the invariant mass distribution recoiling against the {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} system. Assuming the h{sub b}(1P) mass to be 9.900 GeV/c{sup 2}, we measure the upper limit on the branching fraction {Beta}[{Upsilon}(3S) {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}h{sub b}(1P)] < 1.2 x 10{sup -4}, at 90% confidence level. We also investigate the {chi}{sub bJ}(2P) {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} {chi}{sub bJ}(1P), {Upsilon}(3S) {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{Upsilon}(2S), and {Upsilon}(2S) {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{Upsilon}(1S) di-pion transitions and present an improved measurement of the branching fraction of the {Upsilon}(3S) {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{Upsilon}(2S) decay and of the {Upsilon}(3S) - {Upsilon}(2S) mass difference.

Description: Selected results from {tau} analyses performed using the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory are presented. A precise measurement of the {tau} mass and the {tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup -} mass difference is undertaken using the hadronic decay mode {tau}{sup {+-}} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup {+-}}{nu}{sub {tau}}. In addition an investigation into the strange decay modes {tau}{sup -} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}} and {tau}{sup -} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup -}{nu}{sub {tau}} is also presented, including a fit to the {tau}{sup -} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup -}{nu}{sub {tau}} invariant mass spectrum. Precise values for M(K*(892)) and {Lambda}(K*(892)) are obtained.

Measurement of the Mass Difference m(B0) - m(B+)

Description: Using 230 million B{bar B} events recorded with the BABAR detector at the e{sup +}e{sup -} storage rings PEP-II, they reconstruct approximately 4100 B{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi} K{sup +}{pi}{sup -} and 9930 B{sup +} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup +} decays with J/{psi} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} and e{sup +} e{sup -}. From the measured B-momentum distributions in the e{sup +}e{sup -} rest frame, they determine the mass difference m(B{sup 0}) - m(B{sup +}) = (+0.33 {+-} 0.05 {+-} 0.03) MeV/c{sup 2}.
