Real-Time Optimization in Automated Manufacturing Facilities

Description: Abstract: The Symposium on Real-Time Optimization in Automated Manufacturing Facilities was held at the National Bureau of Standards, Gaithersburg, Maryland, January 21-22, 1986. It was jointly sponsored by the Center for Manufacturing Engineering (with funds obtained from the Navy Manufacturing Technology Program) and the Center for Applied Mathematics. It was designed to bring together those who design and test optimization procedures for solving planning, scheduling, and routing problems with those who must use these procedures in a real-time manufacturing environment. Unemployment Through Layoffs and Offshore Outsourcing

Description: This report focuses on unemployment through layoffs. It sets forth the publicly available sources of information on layoffs and determines whether they provide data on the reasons that underlie those events (e.g., weak product demand, financial difficulty). The report next briefly provides a context for the offshore outsourcing phenomenon and its relationship to gross and net employment change. It then analyzes the trend in, severity of, and explanations of extended mass layoffs before concluding with an examination of those layoff events that involve movement-of work to foreign-based affiliates of the U.S. company that called the layoff or to foreign businesses, for example.

Motor Vehicle Manufacturing Employment: National and State Trends and Issues

Description: The 110th Congress is addressing many issues that could have a major impact on the U.S. motor vehicle manufacturing industry. This includes adopting new fuel economy standards for automobiles and light trucks (P.L. 110-140), plus consideration of legislation that may be used to help promote the manufacturing of future generations of fuel-efficient vehicles (S. 2191). Wind Turbine Manufacturing Process Monitoring

Description: To develop a practical inline inspection that could be used in combination with automated composite material placement equipment to economically manufacture high performance and reliable carbon composite wind turbine blade spar caps. The approach technical feasibility and cost benefit will be assessed to provide a solid basis for further development and implementation in the wind turbine industry. The program is focused on the following technology development: (1) Develop in-line monitoring methods, using optical metrology and ultrasound inspection, and perform a demonstration in the lab. This includes development of the approach and performing appropriate demonstration in the lab; (2) Develop methods to predict composite strength reduction due to defects; and (3) Develop process models to predict defects from leading indicators found in the uncured composites.

Industrial Assessment Center

Description: The University of Dayton (UD) performed energy assessments, trained students and supported USDOE objectives. In particular, the UD Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) performed 96 industrial energy assessment days for mid-sized manufacturers. The average identified and implemented savings on each assessment were $261,080 per year and $54,790 per year. The assessments served as direct training in industrial energy efficiency for 16 UD IAC students. The assessments also served as a mechanism for the UD IAC to understand manufacturing energy use and improve upon the science of manufacturing energy efficiency. Specific research results were published in 16 conference proceedings and journals, disseminated in 22 additional invited lectures, and shared with the industrial energy community through the UD IAC website.

Environmental Scanning Practices of Manufacturing Firms in Nigeria

Description: The purpose of this study was to examine scanning practices in a developing country by looking at the scanning behavior of executives of Nigerian manufacturing firms. Specifically, this study examined the decision maker's perception of environmental uncertainty (PEU), the frequency and degree of interest with which decision makers scan each sector of the environment, the frequency of use of various sources of information, the number of organizational adjustments made in response to actions of environmental groups, and the obstacles encountered in collecting information from the environment.

SunSine{trademark}300: Manufacture of an AC Photovoltaic Module; Final Report Phases I & II; 25 July 1995-30 June 1998

Description: The purpose of this PVMaT subcontract was to establish manufacturing capability and enter commercial production with the SunSine{trademark}300 AC Module. This goal was achieved when production began in September 1997, first units were shipped in December 1997, and the pilot production of 109 units was completed in the spring of 1998. As of the completion of this PVMaT project, production capacity is 2500 units per year, which represents 627.5 kW AC {at} STC. This report provides the background of the development process that led to a commercial version of the SunSine{trademark}300; describes the SunSine{trademark}300 product, including theory of operation; provides a summary of all the significant test methods that were applied to prototypes of the product, with a summary of test results; and ends with a summary of the production process and a list of project sponsors who received units for evaluation.

Progress update on the US photovoltaic manufacturing technology project

Description: The Photovoltaic Manufacturing Technology (PVMaT) project is helping the U.S. photovoltaic (PV) industry extend its world leadership role in manufacturing and stimulate the commercial development of PV modules and systems. Initiated in 1990, PVMaT is being carried out in several directed and staggered phases to support industry`s continued progress. Thirteen subcontracts awarded in FY 1996 under Phase 4A emphasize improvement and cost reduction in the manufacture of full-system PV products. Areas of work in Phase 4A included, but were not limited to, issues such as improving module-manufacturing processes; system and system-component packaging, integration, manufacturing, and assembly; product manufacturing flexibility; and balance-of-system development with the goal of product manufacturing improvements. These Phase 4A, product-driven manufacturing research and development (R&D) activities are now completing their second phase. Progress under these Phase 4A and remaining Phase 2B subc ontracts from the earlier PVMaT solicitation are summarized in this paper. Evaluations of the success of this project have been carried out in FY 1995 and late FY 1996. This paper examines the 1997 cost/capacity data that have been collected from active PVMaT manufacturers.
