Geologic evolution of the Jemez Mountains and their potential for future volcanic activity

Description: Geophysical and geochemical data and the geologic history of the Rio Grande rift and the vicinity of the Jemez Mountains are summarized to determine the probability of future volcanic activity in the Los Alamos, New Mexico area. The apparent cyclic nature of volcanism in the Jemez Mountains may be related to intermittent thermal inputs into the volcanic system beneath the region. The Jemez lineament, an alignment of late Cenozoic volcanic centers that crosses the rift near Los Alamos, has playe… more

Department of Energy's waste minimization program

Description: Waste minimization, as mandated by the Congress, requires, the elimination or reduction of the generation of waste as its source, that is, before it can become waste. This audit was made to determine the adequacy of DOE's efforts to minimize the generation of waste. The audit emphasized radioactive and other hazardous waste generation at DOE's nuclear weapons production plants and design laboratories. We included waste minimization activities and actions that can be taken now, in contrast to th… more

Geothermal investigation of spring and well waters of the Los Alamos Region, New Mexico

Description: The chemical and isotopic characters of 20 springs and wells in the Los Alamos area were investigated for indications of geothermal potential. These waters were compared with known hot and mineral springs from adjacent Valles Caldera and San Ysidro. All waters in the Los Alamos area are composed of meteoric water. Isotopic data show that the two primary aquifers beneath the Los Alamos region have different recharge areas. Relatively high concentrations of lithium, arsenic, chlorine, boron, and … more

A Survey of Some Los Alamos County Canyons for Radioactive Contamination, Spring 1953 to Spring 1955

Description: Abstract: This document is a survey analysis of soil samples from Los Alamos, Pueblo, Bayo, and Mortandad canyons to determine the presence and activities of radioactive contaminants. Also included are the results of analyses of a few samples of grass and of surface water. This survey covers the period from spring 1953 to spring 1955.

An analysis of precipitation occurrences in Los Alamos, New Mexico, for long-term predictions of waste repository behavior

Description: This study describes precipitation as an uncontrolled natural input influencing the hydrology of waste repositories in terms of their ultimate long-term closure. The general climatology of the western states, including that of New Mexico and Los Alamos, is first described. An analysis of the precipitation patterns at Los Alamos is then presented to be used for predicting long-term precipitation occurrences and shallow land burial site behavior. The waste management implications of this precipit… more

High Explosive Spot Test Analyses of Samples From Operable Unit (OU) 1111

Description: A preliminary evaluation has been completed of environmental contaminants at selected sites within the Group DX-10 (formally Group M-7) area. Soil samples taken from specific locations at this detonator facility were analyzed for harmful metals and screened for explosives. A sanitary outflow, a burn pit, a pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) production outflow field, an active firing chamber, an inactive firing chamber, and a leach field were sampled. Energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF… more

High-energy neutron dosimetry at the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility

Description: Neutron energy spectrum measurements performed at the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility indicated potential areas for high energy neutron exposure to personnel. The low sensitivity of the Los Alamos thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) to high energy neutrons warranted issuing a NTA dosimeter in addition to the TLD badge to employees entering these areas. The dosimeter consists of a plastic holder surrounding NTA film that has been desiccated and sealed in a dry nitrogen environment. A st… more
