FLOWTRAN benchmarking with onset of flow instability data from 1988 Columbia University single-tube OFI experiment

Description: Benchmarking FLOWTRAN, Version 16.2, with an Onset of Significant Voiding (OSV) criterion against measured Onset of Flow Instability (OFI) data from the 1988--89 Columbia University downflow tests has shown that FLOWTRAN with OSV is a conservative OFI predictor. Calculated limiting flow rates based on the Savannah River Site (SRS) OSV criterion were always higher than the measured flow rates at OFI. This work supplements recent FLOWTRAN benchmarking against 1963 downflow tests at Columbia Unive… more

Muon number violating rare decays

Description: The experimental status of rare decays that violate muon number conservation is summarized, giving upper limits of their branching ratios with 90% confidence. All of the muon experiments share several common elements. They aim to identify the process sought through the measurement of kinematical variables. Large solid angles are required to reach very high sensitivities. The need for good resolution stresses technology in high-rate environments to suppress backgrounds. In order to understand th… more

Open and hidden charm muoproduction. [209 GeV]

Description: New results are presented on open and hidden charm and bottom production by 209-GeV muons interacting in a magnetized steel calorimeter. The upper limit on the production of T states by muons is sigma(..mu..N ..-->.. ..mu..UPSILONX)B(UPSILON ..-->.. ..mu mu..) < 22 x 10/sup -39/ cm/sup 2/ (90% confidence level). The distributions of elastically produced psi's are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation (SCHC) and disagree with psi dominance. From analysis of dimuon final states the cros… more

Bounding burnout risk power limits for the K-14 cycle

Description: This document discusses burnout risk (BOR) power limits which are designed to protect the reactor from a significant release of fission products, due to critical heat flux (CHF) burnout of fuel and target assemblies. At expected operating power levels for the reactor restart, approximately 50% of historical full power, the risk of CHF and attendant burnout is negligible. Flow instability power limits will restrict reactor operation, and flow instability will always occur before CHF. BOR power l… more

Place of HgI/sub 2/ energy-dispersive x-ray detectors

Description: After a review of solid-state conduction counters, in general, and of the history of mercuric iodide, in particular, the theory of operation of solid-state energy-dispersive HgI/sub 2/ detectors is dicusssed. The main factors which limit energy resolution in solid-state compound detectors are considered, including statistical fluctuations in charge generation, the window effect, trapping, inhomogeneities in the detector material, and electronic noise. Potential applications of room-temperature … more

Variable Eddington factors and flux-limiting diffusion coefficients

Description: Variable Eddington factors and flux limiting diffusion coefficients arise in two common techniques of closing the moment equations of transport. The first two moment equations of the full transport equation are still frequently used to solve many problems of radiative or particle transport. An approximate analysis, developed by Levermore, exhibits the relation between the coefficients of the two different techniques. This analysis is described and then used to test the validity of several commo… more

Demonstration of rapid and sensitive module leak certification for space station freedom

Description: A leak detection and quantification demonstration using perflurocarbon tracer (PFT) technology was successfully performed at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center on January 25, 1991. The real-time Dual Trap Analyzer (DTA) at one-half hour after the start of the first run gave an estimated leak rate of 0.7 mL/min. This has since been refined to be 1.15 {plus minus} 0.09 mL/min. The leak rates in the next three runs were determined to be 9.8 {plus minus} 0.7, {minus}0.4 {plus minus} 0.3, and 76 … more

Phenomenological Analysis of Current Limits in Storage Rings

Description: The limitations on the current which can be stored in a storage ring was studied. A simple model is used for the impedance of the beam environment. Feedback systems are assumed to be used to their full capacity to provide beam stability and that in the frequency range where feedback can no longer be used Landau damping will determine how much current can be stored in the ring. Estimates are made for proton storage rings and for electron storage rings of interest as synchrotron radiation sources… more

Transportable charge in a periodic alternating gradient system

Description: A simple set of formulas is derived which relate emittance, line charge density, matched maximum and average envelope radii, occupancy factors, and the (space charge) depressed and vacuum values of tune. This formulation is an improvement on the smooth limit approximation; deviations from exact (numerically determined) relations are on the order of +-2%, while the smooth limit values are in error by up to +-30%. This transport formalism is used to determine the limits of transportable line char… more

Survey of beam-beam limitations

Description: The effect of beam-beam interaction is known to limit the luminosity of electron-positron storage rings and will, no doubt, limit the proton-antiproton collision scheme for the SPS. While theorists are struggling to explain this phenomenon it is more instructive to list their failures than their rather limited successes, in the hope that experiments may emerge which will direct their endeavors. The search for a description of a nonlinear system as it approaches the limit in which ordered motion… more

Uncertainties in TRAC plenum pressures for the FI phase of a DEGB LOCA

Description: The TRAC-PF1/MOD1 code (TRAC) is used to perform best-estimate analyses of certain postulated Design Basis Accidents (DBAs) in SRS production reactors. Currently, the most limiting DBA in terms of reactor power level is an instantaneous double-ended guillotine break (DEGB) loss of coolant accident (LOCA). For this accident, TRAC is used to analyze only the first 5 seconds following the DEGB, which encompasses the Flow Instability (FI) phase of the DBA. The TRAC analysis provides time-dependent … more

Comment on the light-heavy majorana neutrino mechanism in no-neutrino double beta decay

Description: We review the cancellation mechanism between light and heavy neutrinos in no-neutrino double beta decay, and the limits on the mass and mixing angle for the heavy neutrino. We emphasize that the effective mass for no-neutrino double beta decay varies with atomic weight, being heavier the lighter the parent nucleus. A search for double beta decay in /sup 48/Ca will be an excellent test of this mechanism.

Physical constraints on models of gamma-ray bursters

Description: This report deals with the constraints that can be placed on models of gamma-ray burst sources based on only the well-established observational facts and physical principles. The premise is developed that the very hard x-ray and gamma-ray continua spectra are well-established aspects of gamma-ray bursts. Recent theoretical work on gamma-ray bursts are summarized with emphasis on the geometrical properties of the models. Constraints on the source models which are implied by the x-ray and gamma-r… more

Systematics and limit calculations

Description: This note discusses the estimation of systematic uncertainties and their incorporation into upper limit calculations. Two different approaches to reducing systematics and their degrading impact on upper limits are introduced. An improved {chi}{sup 2} function is defined which is useful in comparing Poisson distributed data with models marginalized by systematic uncertainties. Also, a technique using profile likelihoods is introduced which provides a means of constraining the degrading impact of… more

Recent results from SPEAR. [Theta resonance]

Description: The first part of this talk is an experimental review of the properties of the THETA meson. Results or upper limits come from radiative j/psi decays and ..gamma gamma.. scattering for the final states eta eta, ..pi pi.., K anti K and rho rho. In the second part, an upper limit is given for the production of low-mass particles in radiative J/psi decays. Constraints for the existence of low-mass gluonic and Higgs mesons are derived.
