ETRANS: an energy transport system optimization code for distributed networks of solar collectors

Description: The optimization code ETRANS was developed at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory to design and estimate the costs associated with energy transport systems for distributed fields of solar collectors. The code uses frequently cited layouts for dish and trough collectors and optimizes them on a section-by-section basis. The optimal section design is that combination of pipe diameter and insulation thickness that yields the minimum annualized system-resultant cost. Among the quantities included in th… more

Documentation of Volume Three of the 1978 Energy Information Administration Annual Report to Congress

Description: The purpose of the ARC78 forecasts and the ways in which they differ from those in the ARC77 are discussed. In a preliminary overview of the projection process, the relationship between energy prices, supply, and demand is addressed. Topics treated in detail include a description of energy-economic interactions, assumptions regarding world oil prices, and energy modeling in the long term beyond 1995. Subsequent sections present the general approach and methodology underlying the forecasts, and … more

Central receiver solar thermal power system, Phase 1. Pilot plant cost and commercial plant cost and performance preliminary design report. [150 MW commercial tower focus plant and 10 MW pilot plant]

Description: Detailed cost and performance data for the 10 MWe Pilot Plant and the 150 MWe Commercial Plant are given. The Commercial Plant consists of 15 integrated collector - receiver modules. Each module contains 1325 heliostats and an internally mounted steam-generating receiver on a steel tower with an aperture height of 90 M. The Pilot Plant consists of one full-scale collector - receiver module. The two-stage sensible heat storage system utilizes a heat transfer salt medium and a hydrocarbon oil sto… more

Institutional applications of solar total-energy systems. Draft final report

Description: Conceptual designs are presented for thermal and photovoltaic solar total energy (STE) systems optimized to have the lowest possible life-cycle costs. An analysis is made of the market for STE systems, synthesizing the results of interviews with institutional-sector decision-makers and representatives of utilities, component manufacturers, architect/engineers, contractors, and labor unions. The operation and outputs of the market model developed to estimate potential STE system sales and result… more

Off-site consequences of radiological accidents: methods, costs and schedules for decontamination

Description: This report documents a data base and a computer program for conducting a decontamination analysis of a large, radiologically contaminated area. The data base, which was compiled largely through interviews with knowledgeable persons both in the public and private sectors, consists of the costs, physical inputs, rates and contaminant removal efficiencies of a large number of decontamination procedures. The computer program utilizes this data base along with information specific to the contaminat… more

Prototype environmental assessment of the impacts of siting and constructing a Satellite Power System (SPS) Ground Receiving Station (GRS)

Description: This report is a prototype assessment of the environmental and societal impacts of a Satellite Power System (SPS) Ground Receiving Station (GRS). (The term GRS here refers to the overall facility that includes the rectenna, which actually receives and rectifies the microwave energy, as well as support facilities, access roads, a buffer zone, etc. in addition to the rectenna itself.) The study objectives are: (1) to develop a comprehensive prototype assessment of the non-microwave-related impact… more

Development of a risk analysis model. Appendix E. 1,000 ton per day anaerobic digestion plant case study, Final report, October 1979

Description: The Department of Energy (DOE) is investigating processes for the recovery of energy from urban wastes, with the intention of determining how the barriers standing in the way of commercialization of these processes can be overcome. Commercialization of any urban waste energy recovery process is constrained by many complex, uncertain components and interactions. Technical, economic, and institutional barriers presently exist which increase both the real and perceived risks of making such a ventu… more
