Aerial gamma ray and magnetic survey: Mississippi and Florida airborne survey, Nashville quadrangle, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Final report

Description: The Nashville quadrangle covers a portion of the interior lowland plateau region of the Midwestern Physiographic Province. The quadrangle contains a shallow to moderately thick Paleozoic section that overlies a Precambrian basement complex. Paleozoic carbonates dominate surficial exposures. A search of available literature revealed no known uranium deposits. Fifty-five uranium anomalies were detected and are discussed briefly. Most anomalies appear to relate to cultural features. Preliminary direct heat geothermal resource assessment of the Tennessee Valley region

Description: A preliminary appraisal of the direct heat geothermal energy resources of the Tennessee Valley region has been completed. This region includes Kentucky, Tennessee and parts of adjacent states. Intermediate and deep aquifers were selected for study. Description: Subsurface waters at Maxey Flats are anoxic systems with high alkalinity and high concentrations of dissolved ferrous ion. Americium and cobalt in these trench waters are made more soluble by the presence of EDTA, while strontium and cesium are unaffected under the same conditions. EDTA is the major organic complexing component in waste trench 27 leachate, but other polar, water-soluble organics are also present. National hydroelectric power resources study. Preliminary inventory of hydropower resources. Volume 4. Lake Central region

Description: The estimates of existing, incremental and the undeveloped hydropower potential for all states in the various regions of the country are presented. In the Lake Central region, the maximum physical potential for all sites exceeds 26,000 MW with an estimated average annual energy of more than 75,000 GWH. Description: Currently there are 90,000 tons of contaminated ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal stored in aboveground scrap yards at the Department of Energy's Uranium Enrichment Facilities in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio. Geochemistry of trench leachates from Maxey Flats disposal site

Description: The results of the analysis of trench leachates collected at Maxey Flats in October 1981 are presented, and the geochemical factors controlling the trench water chemistry are discussed. In addition, results of laboratory oxidation experiments performed on trench leachates, simulating the behavior of anoxic trench waters as they encounter upon migration an oxidizing environment, are presented.

Natural gas conservation through throttling: a demonstration study. Final technical report

Description: A total of 12 homes in Lexington, Kentucky participated in a demonstration project to investigate the possible energy savings associated with a gas throttling technique applied to residential gas furnaces. In a prior study, two homes utilized the throttling technique during the winter of 1980-81 and indicated an average savings of 9% attributable to gas throttling. Analysis of Devonian Black Shales in Kentucky for Potential Carbon Dioxide Sequestration and Enhanced Natural Gas Production

Description: Carbonaceous (black) Devonian gas shales underlie approximately two-thirds of Kentucky. In these shales, natural gas occurs in the intergranular and fracture porosity and is adsorbed on clay and kerogen surfaces. This is analogous to methane storage in coal beds, where CO2 is preferentially adsorbed, displacing methane. Black shales may similarly desorb methane in the presence of CO2. Application of a damage model for rock fragmentation to the Straight Creek Mine blast experiments

Description: Early attempts at estimation of stress wave damage due to blasting by use of finite element calculations met with limited success due to numerical instabilities that prevented calculations from being carried past the fragmentation limit. Description: The New Albany (Upper Devonian) Shale in western Kentucky can be zoned by using correlative characteristics distinguishable on wire-line logs.
