K-Meson Degeneracies

Description: Abstract: "Some discussion is given of the possible real and charge parity degeneracies of K mesons. An explicit model is used to illustrate the superselection rule, which forbids the K meson to be a mixture of intrinsic parity states and at the same time conserve parity in decay. The discussion is extended to charge parity; the 01, 02 scheme appears to be more than an exercise in polarization phenomenons and to involve a radically new basic assumption--namely, that the 0-0 and 0-(-0) are degenerate states. The [tau]-0 is compared with the 02 as a long-lived K meson, and a method of experimental distinction is described."

Properties of Negtive K Mesons

Description: Report discussing interactions of 420-Mev/c K- mesons incident on a nuclear emulsion stack. Information on the differential scattering, elastic scattering, absorption events, and inelastic scattering of the mesons is provided. A kaon physics program at the Fermialb Main Injector

Description: In this paper we describe a triad of kaon experiments which will form the foundation of a kaon physics program at Fermilab in the Main Injector era. These three experiments; KAMI, CKM and CPT, span the range of experiment types discussed above. KAMI will use the existing neutral kaon beam and the KTeV detector as the basis of a search for the Standard Model ultra rare decay K{sub L} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{nu}{anti {nu}} decay mode is by far the theoretically cleanest measurement of the Standard Model parameter responsible for CP violation. CKM will measure the analogous charged kaon decay mode. Together these two experiments will determine the Standard Model contribution to CP violation independent of the B meson sector. The Standard Model parameters controlling CP violation must be observed to be the same in the K and B meson sectors in order to confirm the Standard Model as the sole source of CP violation in nature. CPT is a hybrid beam experiment using a high purity K{sup +} beam to produce a pure K{sub 0} beam in order to search for violation of CPT symmetry at a mass scale up to the Planck mass. CPT also will measure new CP violation parameters to test the Standard Model and search for rare K{sub S} decays. The Fermilab infrastructure for such a physics program largely already exists. The Main Injector will be an existing accelerator by late 1998 with beam properties comparable to any of the previous ``kaon factory`` proposals. The KTeV detector and neutral kaon beamline are unsurpassed in the world and were originally designed to also operate with the 120 GeV Main Injector beam as KAMI. Scalar and tensor couplings in kaon decays

Description: In the past few years charged kaon experiments have indicated possible scalar and tensor couplings in semileptonic kaon decays (K{yields}{pi}e{nu}). These couplings, if correct, are not predicted by the Standard Model and may indicate the onset of new physics. We present a summary of the existing data and a new, precision measurement of these couplings in the neutral kaon system based on a 3% subset of the data taken by the KTeV (E799) experiment at Fermilab.

The future of fixed target physics: Snowmass E5 working group summary

Description: Fixed target experimentation remains a vigorous and important tool. In many cases it provides the best technique to study elementary physics. Here the authors explore several areas, where, in the near future, fixed target experiments have the potential to alter the understanding of physics. These include, but are clearly not limited to, high precision tests of CP violation in the Kaon sector, ultra-precise determination of the weak mixing angle and its evolution, and lepton flavor violation.

KTeV results: Re(e'/e) and rare decay results

Description: The KTeV physics program encompasses many goals including a precision measurement of the direct CP violation parameter Re({epsilon}{prime}/{epsilon}) in K{sub S,L} {yields} {pi}{pi} decays, and studies of rare neutral kaon decays. The KTeV detector collected data during the Fermilab fixed-target runs of 1996-97 and 1999. This article focuses on the precision measurement of the direct CP violation parameter Re({epsilon}{prime}/{epsilon}) using the 1996-97 data set. In addition, measurements of the neutral kaon parameters {tau}{sub s}, {Delta}m, {phi}{sub {+-}}, {Delta}{phi} from that data set and a new measurement of the branching fraction of K{sub L} {yields} e{sup +}e{sup -} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} from the 1997 and 1999 data also are presented.

The production of {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}}, p, k{sup 0} and {Lambda}{sup 0} in hadronic Z{sup 0} decays

Description: The authors have measured production fractions and spectra for {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}} and p, and production spectra for K{sup 0} and {Lambda}{sup 0} in both hadronic Z{sup 0} decays and a Z{sup 0} {yields} light quark (uds) subset at SLD. The SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector was used to identify charged hadrons. The CCD vertex detector was used to select the enriched uds sample. For the global sample, the results are consistent with previous experiments. The authors observe a clear flavor dependence in production spectra, but only a small effect in hadron fractions and {xi} = ln(1/x{sub p}) peak positions.

Neutral Kaon Interferometry in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) =200 GeV

Description: We present the first statistically meaningful results fromtwo-K0s interferometry in heavy-ion collisions. A model that takes theeffect of the strong interaction into account has been used to fit themeasured correlation function. The effects of single and coupled channelwere explored. At the mean transverse mass m_T = 1.07 GeV, we obtain thevalues R = 4.09 +- 0.46 (stat.) +- 0.31 (sys) fm and lambda = 0.92 +-0.23 (stat) +- 0.13 (sys), where R and lambda are the invariant radiusand chaoticity parameters respectively. The results are qualitativelyconsistent with m_T systematics established with pions in a scenariocharacterized by a strong collective flow.

A Proposal to Continue Measurements of Direct Muon Production in the Forward Direction

Description: The authors recently have measured the direct muon production in the forward direction at small p{perpendicular} and find a large direct muon to pion ratio. At x = 0.3 the ratio is {mu}{sup -}/{pi}{sup -} = 1.83 {+-} 0.43 x 10{sup -4} for negatives and {mu}{sup +}/{pi}{sup +} = 6.4 {+-} 1.3 x 10{sup -5} for positives. The direct production of {mu}{sup +} and {mu}{sup -} are equal although the {pi}{sup +}/{pi}{sup -} ratios is large. They propose to continue these measurements and extend them to higher x. These new measurements would also include the A dependence of the {mu}/{pi} ratio. Based on their experience with this apparatus, they believe it is possible to extend these measurements of single lepton production to production by incident pions and kaons.

THE METASTABLE GAMMA PHASE IN URANIUM BASE MOLYBDENUM ALLOYS

Description: The high-temperature gamma phase of U is body-centered cubic and is stable to the melting point. Molybdenum is one of the body-centered cubic elements that tend to stabilize the gamma phase. The phase diagram, structure of the gamma ' phase, colorimetric measurements, thermal dilation and mechanical properties, electric resistiviiy, and effects of neutron irradiation were studied. Study of Multi-body Charmless B Decays with the BaBar Experiment

Description: The authors report recent measurements of charmless B decays to the final states K{sup +}K{sup +}K{sup -}, {phi}{phi}K, {eta}'{eta}'K, M{sub S}{sup 0}K{sub S}{sup 0}K{sub L}{sup 0}, {bar {Lambda}}p{pi}{sup +}, K*{sup +}h{sup +}h{sup -} and KX(inclusive). The results were obtained using a data sample of up to 288.5 fb{sup -1} recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory at SLAC.
