Exploring novel silicon-containing polymers---From preceramic polymers to conducting polymers with nonlinear optical properties

Description: Several new types of silicon-containing preceramic polymers, i.e., poly(diorganosilacetylene) and poly(diorganosilvinylene) have been synthesized with molecular weights from 10,000 to 120,000. These polymers could be thermally converted to SiC with a moderate to high char yields. Testing of developmental neutral beam sources for MFTF

Description: The design of a four-grid, spherically-focused, 10-by-46-cm area accelerator and ion source for the Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF) has been previously described. This source was designed to operate at 80 kV-80 A for 0.5 s, and along with a matching, three-grid 20-kV-100-A-10-ms accelerator, has been built and tested. Flow of mantle fluids through the ductile lower crust: Heliumisotope trends

Description: Heat and mass are injected into the shallow crust when mantle fluids are able to flow through the ductile lower crust. Minimum 3He/4He ratios in surface fluids from the northern Basin and Range province, western North America increase systematically from low, crustal values in the east to high, mantle values in the west, a regional trend that correlates with the rates of active crustal deformation. Description: Stopping samples of Lucite, Al, Fe, and /sup 238/U (Fe, and /sup 238/U) were irradiated with 330 MeV deuterons (260 MeV protons). Tritium inventory of a target factor in an ICF power plant

Description: A preliminary parametric study has been performed to estimate the tritium inventory of a conjectured Target Factory. The inventory of a proposed tritiated fuel processing system was determined as a function of production efficiency, storage factor, and time interval for the slowest processing step. Results indicated that a study of this type will be beneficial in evaluating possible processing schemes for the production of tritiated laser fusion targets.

Description: We report on the mineralogy, petrology, chemistry, oxygen isotopes, {sup 26}Al-{sup 26}Mg and {sup 36}Cl-{sup 36}S isotope systematics of the Allende chondrule Al3509 discovered and described by [1] and [2]. Theoretical and observational review of results on nova explosions occurring on ONeMg white dwarfs

Description: The nova outburst is the second most violent explosion that occurs in a galaxy. This review presents the recent observational and theoretical studies that have demonstrated that there exist two classes of nova outburst. One type of nova occurs on a CO white dwarf and the other type of nova occurs on an ONeMg white dwarf.
