Beta decay of neutron-rich transuranic nuclei

Description: Allowance is made for beta-delayed fission in the calculation of the mass yield of underground thermonuclear explosions. This allowance is made by calculating a correction factor by four different methods. Remote sensing of soil radionuclide fluxes in a tropical ecosystem

Description: We are using a transponding geostationary satellite to collect surface environmental data to describe the fate of soil-borne radionuclides. Quantifying the Contribution of Lubrication Oil to Particulate Emissions from a Diesel Engine

Description: The contribution of lubrication oil to particulate matter (PM) emissions from a Cummins B5.9 Diesel engine was measured using accelerator mass spectrometry to trace carbon isotope concentrations. The engine operated at fixed medium load (285 N-m (210 ft.lbs.) 1600 m) used 100% biodiesel fuel (B100) with a contemporary carbon-14 ({sup 14}C) concentration of 103 amol {sup 14}C/ mg C. Environmental and technological implications of a theta-pinch fusion power plant

Description: The environmental effects of this conceptual design were evaluated and found to be little different from other electrical power plants in most regards. Exceptions include a very small release of tritium, a low-hazard isotope, and relatively large amounts of radioactive material which must be either stored on site for eventual reprocessing or permanently discarded. Direct Conversion of Neutron Energy and Other Advantages of a Large Yield Per Pulse, Inertial-Confinement Fusion Reactor

Description: Aspects of an inertial-confinement, fusion reactor that uses an energy release {approx gt}10{sup 11} joules are discussed. The large energy release makes possible direct conversion of the fusion neutrons' energy after nuclear heating of an evaporated blanket to the plasma state. Surface damage by charged particles is avoided and structural damage by neutrons is alleviated. Complex fuel assemblies and other expandable parts may be used as a result of the high monetary value of the energy release. more

Steam gasification of carbon: Catalyst properties, March 15, 1992--June 14, 1992

Description: This research uses several techniques to measure the concentration of catalyst sites and determine their stoichiometry for the catalyzed gasification of carbon.
