Single particle behavior in plasmas

Description: The paper follows the history of a neutral atom or molecule into a plasma--ionization, dissociation, radiation,--until it becomes a set of charged particles moving in the electromagnetic fields of the plasma system. The various useful forms of the method of averaging are displayed and applied to calculation of constants of motion. The breakdown of these constants is discussed along with some of the implications for fusion systems.

Radionuclides in plankton from the South Pacific Basin

Description: We have initiated an investigation of the utility of marine plankton as bioconcentrating samplers of low-level marine radioactivity in the southern hemisphere. A literature review has shown that both freshwater and marine plankton have trace element and radionuclide concentration factors (relative to water) of up to 10/sup 4/. Irradiation experiment for lithium ceramics

Description: Solid breeder materials are required in D-T fusion reactor blankets to convert fusion neutrons to tritium and thermal energy while providing some neutron shielding for the magnets. Stability of plutonium contaminated sediments in the Miami--Erie Canal. [Mound Facility, Ohio, radioactive effluents monitoring]

Description: This study was conducted to evaluate the stability of plutonium-contaminated sediment in the Miami-Erie Canal. Correlations were sought to relate concentrations at air sampling stations to plutonium-238 concentrations in air and stack emissions, wind direction, particulate loading, rainfall, and construction activities. Experiments with a lime slurry in a stirred tank for the fixation of carbon-14-contaminated CO/sub 2/ from simulated HTGR fuel reprocessing off-gas

Description: The fixation of CO/sub 2/ with a lime slurry in a stirred tank reactor appears to be feasible. The rate of reaction is fast, and virtually complete removal of CO/sub 2/ can be attained. At a gas residence time of &lt;1 min, the decontamination factor (DF) is &gt;100 in a single stage reactor for CO/sub 2/ concentrations ranging from 5 to 100%. Recent results from studies of non-gaseous fission products with TRISTAN II

Description: A new in-beam target ion-source combination has been installed at the TRISTAN isotope separator facility. Mass separated beams of nongaseous fission products are now available for study. Studies of levels in even-even Cd and Sn nuclei populated through the decay of Ag and In fission products are described, and an evaluation of possibilities for future research is made.

Polarization phenomena in projectile fragmentation process

Description: The nuclear spin polarization of beta-emitting fragments {sup 37}K and {sup 39} Ca has been measured at around the grazing angle of the {sup 40}Ca + Au collision at 106 MeV/u. Momentum dependence of the observed fragment polarization supports the idea that the origin of the polarization is the orbital angular momentum held by the fragment part of the projectile before the collision takes place. A method to estimate the concentration of elements in smoke from burning vegetation growing in contaminated soil

Description: A report on the immobilization of uranium in the earth's crust has been completed. Techniques have been developed to do a comprehensive mass inventory of the Oklo reactor zones. These techniques were applied to a compilation of data from Oklo zones 2 and 3-4. Influence of humic-acid complexing on the mobility of Americium in the soil aquatic environment

CsAlSi/sub 5/O/sub 12/: a possible host for /sup 137/Cs immobilization

Description: CsAlSi/sub 5/O/sub 12/ exhibits more acid resistance than pollucite (CsAlSi/sub 2/O/sub 6/). At pH values of 1.02 and 1.40, the extraction of Cs from CsAlSi/sub 5/O/sub 12/ at 25/sup 0/C was approximately proportional to the square root of leach time. The Cs extraction at 25/sup 0/C varied as (H/sup +/)/sup 0/ /sup 36/ over the pH range of 1 to 6. FITPULS: a code for obtaining analytic fits to aggregate fission-product decay-energy spectra. [In FORTRAN]
