Steam gasification of carbon: Catalyst properties

Description: This research uses several techniques to measure the concentration of catalyst sites and determine their stoichiometry for the catalyzed gasification of carbon. Both alkali and alkaline earth oxides are effective catalysts for accelerating the gasification rate of coal chars, but only a fraction of the catalyst appears to be in a form that is effective for gasification, and the composition of that catalyst is not established. Transient techniques, with {sup 13}C labeling, are being used to stud… more

Comparison of measured and calculated uranium isotopic concentrations in cascade streams at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant

Description: A test has been performed at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) in connection with studies for the US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency on the possibility of utilizing measurements of the concentrations of the minor uranium isotopes in /sup 235/U enrichment cascade external streams as a safeguards technique (MIST). This is the fourth plant test that has been performed in connection with the MIST studies, the first three having been done at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant (ORGDP)… more

Budgets and behaviors of uranium and thorium series isotopes in the Santa Monica Basin off the California Coast

Description: Samples from three time-series sediment traps deployed in the Santa Monica Basin off the California coast were analyzed to study the flux and scavenging of uranium and thorium series isotopes. Variations of uranium and thorium series isotopes fluxes in the water column were obtained by integrating these time-series deployment results. Mass and radionuclide fluxes measured from bottom sediment traps compare favorably with fluxed determined from sediment core data. This agreement suggests that th… more

Inventory and relative biological hazard of LMFBR core materials

Description: Information on the composition of an LMFBR core by element has been collected on the basis of published design data and ORIGEN calculations. The mass quantities of structural materials, actinides, and fission products are in the ratio of 1:1.4:0.1 with actinides, particularly plutonium and neptunium, representing the major inhalation and ingestion hazard. Some of the fission products are present in quantities large enough to suggest that they warrant specific attention in source term analysis.

Preliminary Estimation of Isotopic Inventories of 2000 Mwt Abr (Revision 1).

Description: The isotopic inventories of a 2000 MWt Advanced Burner Reactor (ABR) core have been estimated to support the ABR accident analysis to be reported in the Appendix D of the Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS). Based on the Super-PRISM design, a preliminary core design of 2000 MWt ABR was developed to achieve a one-year cycle length with 3-batch fuel management scheme. For a bounding estimation of transuranics (TRU) inventory, a low TRU conversion ratio ({approx}0.3) was targeted to… more

Adsorption of Pu(IV) Polymer onto 304L Stainless Steel

Description: 'The report, Technical Basis for Safe Operations with Pu-239 Polymer in NMS S Operating Facilities (F H Areas), (WSRC-TR-99-00008) was issued in an effort to upgrade the Authorization Basis (AB) for H Area facilities relative to nuclear criticality. At the time, insufficient data were found in the literature to quantify the adsorption of Pu polymer onto the surfaces of stainless steel tanks. Additional experimental or literature information on the adsorption of Pu(IV) polymer and its removal wa… more

Environmental impact of a teratogenic actinide: a case study of americium-241

Description: Americium-241 is widely used as a radiation source, but it also has some potential risk if taken into the body. Although the radiotoxicity of americium-241 is small compared to other transuranic actinides, its effects on the reproductive system and on development of the placenta are more damaging than the effects of plutonium-239. A previous report based on a worst-case scenario involving a hypothetical fire accident in a contaminated facility indicated that there could have been a significant … more

Neutron capture therapy: Years of experimentation---Years of reflection

Description: This report describes early research on neutron capture therapy over a number of years, beginning in 1950, speaking briefly of patient treatments but dwelling mostly on interpretations of our animal experiments. This work carried out over eighteen years, beginning over forty years ago. Yet, it is only fitting to start by relating how neutron capture therapy became part of Brookhaven's Medical Research Center program.

Thermal Analysis of LANL Ion Exchange Column

Description: This document reports results from an ion exchange column heat transfer analysis requested by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The object of the analysis is to demonstrate that the decay heat from the Pu-238 will not cause resin bed temperatures to increase to a level where the resin significantly degrades.

Cluster-Molecule Systems: Analysis and Tuning of the Interaction Potential

Description: The interaction (modelled by a LEPS potential) of a D[sub 2] molecule with an icosahedral Ni[sub 13] cluster is mapped and analyzed in the form of equipotential contour plots. The topological features of the map correlate with the energetic and dynamical characteristics of the dissociative adsorption of the molecule on the cluster, which were extracted from quasiclassical trajectory simulations. A modification of the LEPS potential used originally is introduced. It brings the calculated reactiv… more

Radiation Damage to Organic Ion-Exchange Materials

Description: From abstract: "The stability of polystyrene and phenolic ion-exchange resins to radiation from a Co60 source and from absorbed Ce144-PR144 was investigated. Sulfonated polystyrene cation-exchange resins lost 10 to 20% of their capacity per watt-hour of radiation absorbed per gram of oven-dry resin, while the quaternary amine anion-exchange polystyrene resins lost about 40%. Phenolic cation-exchange resins lost only 1%."

Secondary charged particle spectra and kerma calculations

Description: The calculation of kerma factors from known cross sections is not as simple as is often implied. The kerma factors are strongly influenced by the reaction mechanism assumed. An important example of this dependence on the reaction mechanism is the contribution of the /sup 12/C(n,n')3..cap alpha.. reaction to the total kerma in carbon. First, a short review will be given of the ENDF/B-V carbon cross sections which were used in the calculation of carbon kerma factors. Using the reaction channels i… more

Absolute dipole gamma-ray strength functions for /sup 176/Lu. Supplement

Description: We have derived absolute dipole strength-function information for /sup 176/Lu from an average resonance capture study of /sup 175/Lu with 2-keV neutrons and from neutron capture cross-section measurements with neutrons from 30 keV to about 1 MeV. We found that we needed to increase our previous estimate of the relative M1/E1 strengths near 5 MeV by a factor of 3 and to revise downward the absolute magnitude of our E1 strength function. We accomplished the latter, while still maintaining continu… more

Qualification of reserve RTF Pd/Z: Task technical plan

Description: Palladium deposited on zeolite (Pd/Z) used in the Purge Stripper System in the Replacement Tritium Facility (RTF) was produced using tetraamminepalladium (II) nitrate and 4{times}8 mesh beads of Type 4A zeolite. In March 1991, RTF requested that an additional 100 liters of Pd/Z be procured as reserve material, half by ETS and half from Ionex Research Corp. Objective of this activity is to confirm that Reserve RTF Pd/Z meets the technical requirements of the Specification WCM-4 for procurement o… more

Ortho-para forms of hydrogen, deuterium, and tritium: radiation and self-induced conversion kinetics and equilibria

Description: The theory of the ortho-para transitions in H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/ is developed. Experimental and calculated values of the ortho-para compositions of the three hydrogen isotopes mentioned in the literature are correlated as a function of temperature, and are discussed critically. The kinetics of the radiation and self-induced ortho-para transitions are reviewed. In general, the radiation-induced transitions are more rapid than the self-induced transitions. We estimate (based on data f… more
