A Determination of the U-235 Content in Highly Impoverished Material

Description: Introduction: "The product of a special run made in XAX was submitted to the Assay Department for a determination of the residual content of the 235 isotope. Isotopes of Neptunium and Plutonium

Description: This report describes work done that originated in an effort to identify previously unknown isotopes of neptunium and plutonium and to characterize a few that were known for extension of the nuclear energy surface. The findings of this work results in two new light plutonium isotopes and one heavy neptunium isotope that were produced by bombardment of uranium with helium and deuteron ions from a 60-inch cyclotron and a 184-inch cyclotron. The chemical and experimental methods are described as well as the results of the bombardment work for each nuclide.

The Isotopic Composition of Trace Quantities of Lead and Calcium

Description: The following report discusses development of new micro-chemical and micro-mas spectrometric techniques for handling trace quantities of lead. The first two sections of this report summarizes the development and trial application to mineral separates of a granite rock. The third section summarizes similar techniques developed for the determination of calcium, and gives the results of an application of the technique to the determination of the radioactive decay constants of K-40.

General Report of Stable Isotope Separation

Description: Abstract: "The Calutron has been successfully employed to separate the stable isotopes of twenty-one elements. The standard Beta M-2 unit modified to handle charge materials of various temperature ranges has proven adequate for a majority of separations. The problem of K life has received considerable attention but is still to be solved. Other operational problems are similar in most respects to those of uranium. The E design has, of necessity, varied greatly from the "Beta Gloria" type. A desire to keep construction simple, yet adequate for efficient collection and readily adaptable for use with many elements, has dictated the trend in E design. Water cooling on the receiver pockets was necessary with many of the elements separated. The chemical purification of the separated samples, although following a general pattern, varies with the type of pockets used and the element collected."

The [beta]-Spectra of Pu²³⁹, Pu²⁴⁰, Pu²⁴¹and Sm¹⁵¹

Description: The [beta] spectrum of the 10-year Pu²⁴¹ was run on a sample of radiochemically pure plutonium containing the isotopes Pu²³⁹, Pu²⁴⁰, Pu²⁴¹, isotopically enriched in Pu²⁴¹ by pile neutron irradiation. The isotopic composition was determined mass spectrographically.

Radiative Capture of Protons in Ne²⁰

Description: Abstract: "A preliminary measurement of the Ne²⁰(p,γ)Na²¹ reaction cross section has been made. Targets were prepared by bombarding aluminum targets with neon ions. The neon concentration in the target was determined by elastic scattering of 1.5-Mev-protons. The yield of positrons from the reaction Ne²⁰(p,γ)Na²¹(β)Ne²¹ was identified by the 23-second half life of Na²¹."

Estimation of Neutron Energy for First Resonance From Absorption Cross Section for Thermal Neutrons

Description: Examination of published data for some 52 isotopes indicates that the neutron energy for which the first resonance occurs is related to the magnitude of the thermal absorption cross section. The empirical relation obtained is in qualitative agreement with the results of a simplified version of the resonance theory of the nucleus of Breit-Wigner.
