First order study for an iron core OH system for TNS

Description: A simple comparison has been made between an air core and an iron core ohmic heating system for a particular device, and it was shown that the peak power requirements can be substantially reduced by the use of an iron core to power levels handled by industry today. Internal magnetic fields in hcp-iron

Description: The magnetic behavior of hcp-Fe (epsilon iron) has been investigated by the Moessbauer Effect over a wide range of temperature T, pressure P, and applied magnetic field H/sub 0/. The internal field H/sub i/ of the induced moment is given by H/sub i/ = 0.20 +- .01 H/sub 0/ and is independent of T and P. Enhanced paramagnetism is suggested as the most likely origin for a contribution of this magnitude to H/sub i/.

Magnetic excitations in transition-metal ferromagnets. Recent progress and future prospects on neutron scattering experiments

Description: A review is given on current neutron scattering experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory on transition-metal ferromagnets Ni, Fe, Pd/sub 2/MnSn and MnSi. The scattering intensity in constant-energy scans, observed above T/sub c/ in all of these materials, exhibited a clear peak at finite momentum transfers. Atomic structure of clusters through chemical reactions

Description: Techniques for the probing of isolated metal cluster structure through adsorbate binding patterns will be described. The saturation of clusters with reagents such as ammonia and nitrogen provides information on the number of preferred binding sites for these reagents. Effect of cation exchange on the subsequent reactivity of lignite chars to steam. [108 references]

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the role which cations in coal play in the subsequent reactivity of chars. It is hoped that this investigation will aid in an understanding of the catalytic nature of inorganic constituents in coal during its gasification. Muon Spin-Rotation Study on Magnetite

Description: Muon spin-rotation (..mu..SR) results on synthetic single crystals of magnetite (Fe/sub 3/O/sub 4/) support the idea of muon bond formation in oxides. The anomaly in the temperature dependence of the ..mu..SR signal observed in Fe/sub 3/O/sub 4/ may be attributed to the existence of molecular polarons in the Verwey transition-temperature region.

Soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering study of thin films and multilayers

Description: A brief review of using soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering in the study of magnetic thin films and multilayers is given. Results from recent studies of thin Fe films and Fe/Gd multilayers are used as examples to demonstrate the information can be obtained and the unique features of this technique. Calculated hadronic transmission through iron absorbers

Description: The transmission of hadrons through iron absorbers is investigated for a variety of experimental configurations, and incident particle types (protons, and charged pions) and energies (0.8 GeV/c to 100 GeV). The results obtained are consistent with available experimental data.

Description: e transformation studies showed that synthetic aluminas produced in the laboratory were not transformed to alpha alumina at 400 to 700' deg n the presence of nitric acid and water vapor. Amorphous aluminn produced in the pilot plant was transformed to alpha alumina. Description: We report on some studies we have made of the time evolution of the corrosion behavior of ion implanted samples of pure iron, medium carbon steel, and 18-8 Cr-Ni stainless steel. Relative availability of selected trace elements from coal fly ash and Lake Michigan sediment

Description: The concentration of greater than 1 ..mu..m coal fly ash particles in Lake Michigan surface waters was found to be 10/sup 5/ to 10/sup 6/ per liter. With an expected residence time of one year, this concentration implies a flux to the sediment of 10/sup 6/ to 10/sup 7/ particles/cm/sup 2//yr, or about 10/sup -6/ to 10/sup -5/ g/cm/sup 2//yr.
