Description: From abstract: "A chamber was constructed with three electrodes dividing the space into two regions of 800 c.c. The surfaces of one of these were coated with boron carbide. With opposite potentials on two electrodes, ion currents to the collecting electrode due to gamma rays were practically cancelled and ion currents due to alpha rays induced by slow neutrons were measured."

Isotopic Examination of Tantalum

Description: Introduction: "The ionization region in the Nier mass spectrometer is customarily constructed of copper. Various other metals were tried for this purpose; among them tantalum and molybdenum, with both metals it was found that a spectrum of the fluoride of the metal appeared when uranium hexafluoride was admitted. It was thus possible to produce tantalum fluoride with comparative ease and to make a critical examination of the mass spectrum to set an upper limit of abundance of tantalum isotopes. For positive identification, a line must appear in all ion positions in the same abundance, relative to the main line. It must be shown that any lines which appear are not contributed by other elements or compounds."

Laboratory Production of Fine Grain Nuclear Emulsion

Description: Abstract: "Nuclear emulsion has been made in a manner similar to that of Demers and of Perfilov. An attempt has been made to achieve the grain size and sensitivity of Perflov's type P-9 Sensitive emulsion. Silver bromide grain sizes of essentially the same average size as Perfilov's were made from precipitations carried out over a narrow range of pAg's. Three brands of gelatin were tried. High sensitivity has not been achieved."

Beta and Gamma Correction Factors for the Eberline R0-20 Ionization Chamber Survey Instrument

Description: This technical document provides details of derived correction factors for the Eberline R0-20 survey meter, which uses an ionization chamber to measure ambient exposure rates. A thin end window allows the instrument to measure exposure rates from non-penetrating radiation (i.e., beta radiation). Correction factors are provided for contact measurements with beta and gamma disk sources, gamma beams and, finally, general area beta fields. Beta correction factors are based on the instrument's response to 204Tl, selected as the most conservative isotope for beta correction factors, as indicated in previous studies of similar instruments using 204Tl, 147Pm, and 90Sr(Y) isotopes (LANL 1982). Gamma correction factors are based on 137Cs, considered the predominant source of gamma radiation on the Hanford Site.

Progress Report: Development and Construction of Alpha-Counting Equipment

Description: Abstract: An ionization chamber for use in counting alpha particle activity from the air has been devised for counting samples collected with the electrostatic precipitator. The chamber is an adaptation of the breech-locking standard chamber, with a cylindrical high voltage electrode into which the collection foil is placed, and a coaxial rod as a collecting electrode. A geometrical efficiency of close to 50% is obtained.

Critical Ionization of Potentials of Uranium Hexafluoride

Description: Introduction: "The extensive use of uranium hexafluoride in the Nier-type mass spectrometers, where the ionization is produced by slow electrons, made a knowledge of the ionization potentials of the various ions desirable. This information was not available and work was accordingly begun to secure such data. The first measurement was made with a VGIA ion gauge and has been described in TEO report CD-310. With this apparatus it was not possible to identify the ionization products and it was presumed that the value reported was for the UF5 ion. When time and equipment became available, the work was continued and the critical potentials of the singly-charged ions determined."

Alpha Particle Detection and the A. C. Operated Detector "A" (Howler)

Description: Abstract: This discussion concerns the operation, construction, and servicing of an alpha rate meter of medium sensitivity (30,000 alpha particles full scale per minute) and good stability. The instrument is equipped with an oscillator which increases both in frequency and loudness as the alpha activity is increased. The oscillator circuit includes an anticipator which causes a change in frequency depending directly upon the rate of change of alpha activity. Maximum sensitivity is approximately 100 millivolts full scale. Grid current varies from 1 to 5 x 10^-14 amperes. A general discussion of time constants and accuracy is included. Tables of stopping power, ionization and alpha activity are appended.

Balanced Ionization Chamber for Differential Measurements of Gamma Rays

Description: "The purpose of the work was to develop a method of measuring very small differences in the half lives of gamma ray emitting radioactive substances.
