Characterization of Surplus Plutonium for Disposition Options

Description: The United States (U.S.) has identified 61.5 metric tons (MT) of plutonium that is permanently excess to use in nuclear weapons programs, including 47.2 MT of weapons-grade plutonium. Except for materials that remain in use for programs outside of national defense, including programs for nuclear-energy development, the surplus inventories will be stored safely by the Department of Energy (DOE) and then transferred to facilities that will prepare the plutonium for permanent disposition. Some ite… more

Separation of Nuclear Fuel Surrogates from Silicon Carbide Inert Matrix

Description: The objective of this project has been to identify a process for separating transuranic species from silicon carbide (SiC). Silicon carbide has become one of the prime candidates for the matrix in inert matrix fuels, (IMF) being designed to reduce plutonium inventories and the long half-lives actinides through transmutation since complete reaction is not practical it become necessary to separate the non-transmuted materials from the silicon carbide matrix for ultimate reprocessing. This work re… more

Uranium miner lung cancer study. Progress report for period, July 1, 1977--July 1 1978

Description: This study was initiated in 1957 by the U.S. Public Health, and many facets of this project are reaching final objectives. Many new studies have developed in the course of this study and will continue. The projects supported by The Department of Energy during the past year are of utmost importance and consist of: (a) collection of material from uranium miners known to have cancer of the lung into a tumor registry; (b) completion and publication of the Manual on Pulmonary Cytology; (c) regressio… more

Hanford radioactive waste management plans

Description: This addendum provides primarily the information relative to waste management as called out in the unclassified report. This information is provided in the following tables. In addition to the gaseous radionuclides (Ar-41, I-131, H-3) noted in the unclassified report, krypton and xenon are also released during dissolution of fuel. The chemically inert character of these elements prevents their removal by the usual off-gas treatment, but at the same time also prevents their uptake by biological … more

Strategic petroleum reserve. Quarterly report

Description: The Strategic Petroleum Reserve serves as one of our most important investments in reducing the Nation`s vulnerability to oil supply disruptions. Its existence provides an effective response mechanism should a disruption occur and a formidable deterrent to the use of oil as a political instrument. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve was created pursuant to the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of December 22, 1975, (Public Law 94-163) as amended, to reduce the impact of disruptions in supplies of … more

Urban Form Energy Use and Emissions in China: Preliminary Findings and Model Proof of Concept

Description: Urbanization is reshaping China's economy, society, and energy system. Between 1990 and 2008 China added more than 300 million new urban residents, bringing the total urbanization rate to 46%. The ongoing population shift is spurring energy demand for new construction, as well as additional residential use with the replacement of rural biomass by urban commercial energy services. This project developed a modeling tool to quantify the full energy consequences of a particular form of urban reside… more

2004 Toxic Chemical Release Inventory Report for the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986, Title III, Section 313

Description: Section 313 of Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) specifically requires facilities to submit a Toxic Chemical Release Inventory Report (Form R) to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state agencies if the owners and operators manufacture, process, or otherwise use any of the listed toxic chemicals above listed threshold quantities. EPA compiles this data in the Toxic Release Inventory database. Form R reports for each chemical over threshold quantities mus… more

Facility Effluent Monitoring Plan for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Balance-of-Plant Facilities

Description: The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) operates a number of Research & Development (R&D) facilities for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on the Hanford Site. Facility effluent monitoring plans (FEMPs) have been developed to document the facility effluent monitoring portion of the Environmental Monitoring Plan (DOE 2000) for the Hanford Site. Three of PNNL’s R&D facilities, the 325, 331, and 3720 Buildings, are considered major emission points for radionuclide air sampling, and indi… more

Black carbon aerosols and the third polar ice cap

Description: Recent thinning of glaciers over the Himalayas (sometimes referred to as the third polar region) have raised concern on future water supplies since these glaciers supply water to large river systems that support millions of people inhabiting the surrounding areas. Black carbon (BC) aerosols, released from incomplete combustion, have been increasingly implicated as causing large changes in the hydrology and radiative forcing over Asia and its deposition on snow is thought to increase snow melt. … more

Hydrodynamic Simulation of the Columbia River, Hanford Reach, 1940--2004

Description: Many hydrological and biological problems in the Columbia River corridor through the Hanford Site require estimates of river stage (water surface elevation) or river flow and velocity. Systematic collection of river stage data at locations in the Hanford Reach began in 1991, but many environmental projects need river stage information at unmeasured locations or over longer time periods. The Modular Aquatic Simulation System 1D (MASS1), a one-dimensional, unsteady hydrodynamic and water quality … more

Special Analysis: Update of Disposal of Cement-Stabilized Encapsulated Waste at the E-Area Low-Level Waste Facility

Description: This Special Analysis for Components-in-Grout (CIG) expands the list of isotopes to the full suite of normal isotopes. This revision also addresses selected isotopes in special waste forms from the K and L basin resin that have waste-specific Kds and high-concentration I-129 wastes with waste-specific Kds, including Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF) activated carbon vessels. The full suite of normal isotopes was first screened using the Slit Trench screening results as a conservative approach. … more

Microbially Mediated Immobilization of Contaminants Through In Situ Biostimulation: Scale up of EMSP project 55267

Description: The overall goal of the proposed research is to provide an improved understanding and predictive capability of the mechanisms that allow metal-reducing bacteria to be effective in the bioremediation of redox sensitive toxic metals and radionuclides. The study is motivated by the likelihood that subsurface metal-reducing bacteria can be stimulated to effectively alter the redox state of contaminants so that they are immobilized in situ for long time periods. The work described in this proposal w… more

ALARA Analysis of Radiological Control Criteria Associated with Alternatives for Disposal of Hazardous Wastes

Description: This ALARA analysis of Radiological Control Criteria (RCC) considers alternatives to continued storage of certain DOE mixed wastes. It also considers the option of treating hazardous wastes generated by DOE facilities, which have a very low concentration of radionuclide contaminants, as purely hazardous waste. Alternative allowable contaminant levels examined correspond to doses to an individual ranging from 0.01 mrem/yr to 10 to 20 mrem/yr. Generic waste inventory data and radionuclide source … more
