Aeronautic Instruments Section 4: Direction Instruments

Description: Part one points out the adequacy of a consideration of the steady state gyroscopic motion as a basis for the discussion of displacements of the gyroscope mounted on an airplane, and develops a simple theory on this basis. Part two describes a new type of stabilizing gyro mounted on top of a spindle by means of a universal joint, the spindle being kept in a vertical position by supporting it as a pendulum of which the bob is the driving motor. Methods of tests and the difficulties in designing a satisfactory and reliable compass for aircraft use in considered in part three. Part four contains a brief general treatment of the important features of construction of aircraft compasses and description of the principal types used.

Aeronautic Instruments Section 6: Oxygen Instruments

Description: This report contains statements as to amount of oxygen required at different altitudes and the methods of storing oxygen. The two types of control apparatus - the compressed oxygen type and the liquid oxygen type - are described. Ten different instruments of the compressed type are described, as well as the foreign instruments of the liquid types. The performance and specifications and the results of laboratory tests on all representative types conclude this report.

A Pulse Ammeter

Description: A quantizing pulse ammeter has been designed which brackets an input pulse current peak between two preset current levels. These levels are easily selected by calibration circuits contained on the chassis. Readout is presented in the form of a Nixie visual display as well as an output which is suitable for automatic data recording.

Accelerometer design

Description: In connection with the development of an accelerometer for measuring the loads on airplanes in free flight a study of the theory of such instruments has been made, and the results of this study are summarized in this report. A portion of the analysis deals particularly with the sources of error and with the limitations placed on the location of the instrument in the airplane. The discussion of the dynamics of the accelerometer includes a study of its theoretical motions and of the way in which they are affected by the natural period of vibration and by the damping, together with a report of some experiments on the effect of forced vibrations on the record.

The Sandia APAR-3G system: Automatic Programming, Recording, and Control for Development and Production Testing

Description: Abstract: The APAR-3G system is an automatic programming, controlling and recording machine which is readily adaptable to a wide variety of automated data acquisition and constrol system applications. It is physically and logically modular to permit the assemby of minimum or maximum capability machines. This system can perform the necessary acquisition and control in a typical factory environment and can generate an output (for data reduction) which is compatible with available computer systems.

Progress in Airborne Radioactivity Surveying

Description: From abstract: The objectives in the investigation of airborne radioactivity surveying during fiscal year 1951 were: 1) Establishment of a routine technique of airborne radioactivity surveying -- completed by incorporating those phases of the aeromagnetic surveying technique that were applicable; 2) Development of automatic correction of the radiation measurement for variation in distance from source -- achieved by using the radar altimeter output to modify the output of the counting-rate meter in accordance with the observed variation of radiation intensity with distance from a source; 3) Development of more efficient radiation detectors -- including large scintillation detectors.

Description: Report presenting 700 additional references to the field of temperature measurement as a supplement to NBS Monograph 27, "Bibliography of Temperature Measurement, January 1953 to June 1960" issued April 6, 1961. These references were collected from two general sources: Scientific and technical literature and government reports. The period covered is from July 1960 to December 1962 with some earlier references which were found later. The arrangement of material is the same as in Monograph 27.
