Experimental Gas Cooled Reactor-Creep Test, Agot Graphite

Description: Tests were conducted to determine the cumulative and permanent deflection of a beam subjected to two-point loading for (1) ambient temperature- atmospheric environment, and (2) 800 deg F-atmospheric environment, for 8OO psi maximum flexural stresses. Deflection curves are given for five specimens. An analysis of the data indicated that if the core graphite creeps while at EGCR conditions by approximately 1.5 times its creep rate at ambient temperature, the stresses will level off below 1000 psi… more

Fabrication of Aluminum Clad Plutonium-Aluminum Alloy Pin Elements

Description: Specifications are given for the fabrication of Al--Pu alloy pins clad in aluminum. The cladding components were loy pins clad in alummum. The cladding components were fabricated from 1100 aluminum, 1/16 in. in diameter. End caps were fabricated from the same material by a series of passes through draw plates to 0.035-in. diameter. The core material was cast as cylinders 0.375 in. in diameter and approximately 2 in. long in a heated graphite mold. The alloy composition was 15.75 wt.% plutonium.… more

PRESSURIZATION OF HRE-3 WITH AN OXYGEN-INERT GAS MIXTURE

Description: Calculations made on the possibility of pressurizing HRE-3 with oxygen- helium and oxygen-argon mixtures indicate that such a system is feasible, but not necessarily more desirable than use of oxygen alone. The explosion hazard would not be reduced significantly by use of the inert gas and the off-gas design problems would be somewhat more difficult. (auth)

High-Temperature Mechanical Properties of Tantalum

Description: Creep and creep-rupture tests were performed at 1200 F in the helium on arc-cast and on sintered rolled tantalum sheet to investigate the effect of structure and gaseous contamination on the creep resistance of tantalum. A vacuum-induction furnace was developed for annealing and for degassing the as- received coldworked material. The tests were conducted with inertatmosphere resistance creep furnaces designed to prevent excessive interstitial-element pickup. The effect of hydrogen, nitrogen, an… more
