High-resolution optical imaging on thermoplastic film

Description: Experimental details of a novel method for recording optical images is presented. In this method, a photoconductive layer arranges electric charges according to the optical image projected onto it. The differential electric fields thus produced, squeeze a thermoplastic layer into ridges that constitute the final image. The interference of two laser beams (0.83 mu m) that formed an optical image of l000 cycles/mm was clearly and accurately recorded. The spatial frequency response differs from th… more

Correlation Analysis of TEM Images of Nanocrystal Molecules

Description: Quantitative characterizataion of images of naocrystals and nanostructures is a challenging but important task. The development and optimization of methods for the construction of complex nanostructures rely on imaging techniques. Computer programs were developed to quantify TEM images of nanocrystal/DNA nanostructures, and results are presented for heterodimers annd trimers of gold nanocrystals. The programs presented here have also been used to analyze more complex trimers and tetramers linke… more

[Adam & Eve frontispiece etching]

Description: Etching print included as the frontispiece of a unknown volume printed in 1780. The plate includes a classic biblical image of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden at the moment the snake offers the fruit to Eve. The image includes excellent details of various animals scattered around the pint such as a frog, various insects, birds and a partially hidden cow laying in the tree line.

Analysis and Mapping of Vegetation and Habitat for the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge

Description: The Lakeview, Oregon, office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) contracted Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to classify vegetation communities on Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge in northeastern Nevada. The objective of the mapping project was to provide USFWS refuge biologists and planners with detailed vegetation and habitat information that can be referenced to make better decisions regarding wildlife resources, fuels and fire risk, and land management. This letter repo… more

Analysis of Shock-Void Experiment

Description: The authors compare CALE simulations with recent experimental results of a laser-induced shock traversing a spherical under-dense region (''void''). In this report the experimental results are described, as well as several numerical attempts at explaining the observed radiographs. The conclusion is that the numerical simulations at this time cannot satisfactorily explain the experiment. The simulations also indicate that the introduction of air gaps between the under-dense sphere and the surrou… more

Access to Film and Video Works: Surrogates for Moving Image Documents

Description: This doctoral dissertation discusses access to film and video works. Physical and intellectual access to moving image documents is insufficient, often insignificant, at the level of the individual user. Existing access tools suffer from a lack of recognition of the differences between linguistic text communication and image communication. Browsing and relevance judgements are made difficult by the physical realities of film and video documents - one cannot flip through them - and by the habits … more

Between Spaces 05

Description: The digital photograph depicts, in the lower portion of the frame, an unmade bed with striped sheets and a white blanket. In the background, on the headboard, hangs a black and white image of architecture. The wooden frame from the bed continues up onto the wall and holds the black and white image. Along the right hand edge of the work is a set of shelves.

Fracture imaging with converted elastic waves

Description: This paper examines the seismic signatures of discrete, finite-length fractures, and outlines an approach for elastic, prestack reverse-time imaging of discrete fractures. The results of this study highlight the importance of incorporating fracture-generated P-S converted waves into the imaging method, and presents an alternate imaging condition that can be used in elastic reverse-time imaging when a direct wave is recorded (e.g., for crosswell and VSP acquisition geometries).

Electrostatic Effects in III-V Semiconductor Based Metal-optical Nanostructures

Description: The modification of the band edge or emission energy of semiconductor quantum well light emitters due to image charge induced phenomenon is an emerging field of study. This effect observed in quantum well light emitters is critical for all metal-optics based light emitters including plasmonics, or nanometallic electrode based light emitters. This dissertation presents, for the first time, a systematic study of the image charge effect on semiconductor–metal systems. the necessity of introducing … more
