Description: In the last quarterly report we presented results of coprocessing runs made with an Illinois No. 6 coal and an AMOCO VTR (as received) and after the heavy oil had been pretreated a number of different ways. Coal conversions and product yields were presented for each coprocessing experiment. We have now further analyzed results from coprocessing experiments in order to estimate the yields of coal-derived gas, asphaltenes and oil products. [Toxicity studies of mild gasification products]. [Quarterly report, January 1, 1993--March 31, 1993]

Description: Both IST No. 9 and IST No. 10 displayed mutagenic activity only in the presence of S9 metabolic activation. The mutagenicity of IST No. 9 to TA98 (with S9 activation) was low, but positively confirmed using both solvents (Table 1) . The mutagenic activity of IST No. 9 was also detected, as noted in Table 1, on TA100 with S9 activation when solvated in DMSO. Changes in Organic Sulfur Compounds in Coal Macerals During Liquefaction

Description: Several general trends were observed in reactivity patterns of sulfur compounds in macerals. Sulfur is reduced in the asphaltene fraction compared to initial maceral. Aliphatics are removed and polycyclic aromatic compounds are both stable and probably formed under these conditions. Molecules containing two sulfur atoms are formed. The preasphaltenes are now being analyzed by DEIHRMS.

Hydrodynamic behavior of a liquid-solid fluidized-bed reactor for the bioconversion of coal particles to liquid products

Description: A predictive mathematical model based on particle convection and dispersion is presented for a liquid fluidized bed of coal particles.
