Organic iodine removal from simulated dissolver off-gas streams using silver-exchanged mordenite

Description: The removal of methyl iodide by absorption onto silver mordenite was studied using a simulated off-gas from the fuel dissolution step of a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. The methyl iodide absorption of silver mordenite was examined for the effects of NO/sub x/, humidity, iodine concentration, filter temperature, and filter pretreatment. The highest iodine loading achieved in these tests has been 34 mg CH/sub 3/I per g of substrate, approximately five times less than the elemental iodine loadi… more

Development of a three-dimensional model of the atmospheric boundary layer using the finite element method

Description: This report summarizes our current effort and ideas toward the development of a model for the planetary boundary layer using the finite element technique. As an initial step, the finite element methodology is applied to simpler version of the boundary layer equations given by the two-dimensional, constant-property, incompressible conservation equations (Navier-Stokes equations). Solution procedures for both the steady-state and transient equations are discussed. For the transient problem, a var… more

An experimental study of the response of the Galesville sandstone to simulated CAES conditions

Description: The objective of this experimental study was to determine how the mineralogical and physical characteristics of host rock formations are affected by environmental conditions anticipated for compressed air energy storage (CAES) in porous, permeable rock. In this study, Galesville sandstone cores were reacted in autoclave pressure vessels supporting one of four environments: dry air; heated, air-water vapor; heated, nitrogen-water vapor mixtures; and heated, compressed, liquid water. The simulate… more

Solar energy conversion: an analysis of impacts on desert ecosystems. Progress report, June 1, 1977--December 31, 1977

Description: Some of the important potential ecological impacts that might occur when solar collector arrays are constructed and maintained in the desert Southwest are discussed. These impacts are categorized under major environmental consequences of solar collector development, that is, shading, wind deflection and site destruction and soil disturbance. Under these major categories secondary impacts are developed to show the significance of altering desert ecosystems with solar conversion systems. Some of … more

Environmental radiation safety source term evaluation program

Description: Plutonium-238 is currently used in the form of a pure refractory oxide as a power source on a number of space vehicles that have already been or will be launched during the next few years. Although the sources are designed and built to withstand re-entry into the earth's atmosphere and impact with the earth's surface without releasing any plutonium, the possibility of such an event can never be absolutely excluded. Three separate tasks were undertaken in this study. The interactions between soi… more

Long-term exposure of /sup 238/PuO/sub 2/ to a terrestrial environment. Volume 2

Description: Two environmental simulation chambers were used to study the behavior of a /sup 238/PuO/sub 2/ heat source deposited in a humid, temperate environment. Large fragments from an impact-tested source were deposited in the first chamber, and fines from the source were placed in the second. Plutonium released into the soil, the soil drainages, and the condensates from the dehumidifiers were monitored throughout the experiment. The concentration of plutonium released into the soil drainages increased… more

Proceedings of the workshop on the modification of the upper atmosphere by Satellite Power System (SPS) propulsion effluents

Description: Results of a workshop held in June 1979, to identify research needs for evaluating environmental impacts on the upper atmosphere (here defined as greater than 70 km) due to Satellite Power System (SPS) transport, i.e., propulsion and reentry are presented. The substantial injections of water and hydrogen therefrom may lead to global-scale regions of reduced ionization in the ionospheric F-Region that may have a serious impact on worldwide HF radio communications; and the resulting possibly sign… more

Raman spectroscopy and principal factor multivariate curve resolution analysis of concentrated A1[sub 2]O[sub 3]-Na[sub 2]O-H[sub 2]O solutions

Description: Principal factor multivariate curve resolution has been applied to a series of Raman spectra for samples representing, highly concentrated alkaline aluminate slurries. Factors are extracted that represent the behavior of the dominant chemical species present, including aluminate monomer, aluminate oligomers, water, and hydroxide. The analysis is particularly useful in unraveling the numerous contributions in the v(0H) region of the spectrum. These extracted factors were further examined by comp… more

Research on Spent Fuel Storage and Transportation in CRIEPI (Part 2 Concrete Cask Storage)

Description: Concrete cask storage has been implemented in the world. At a later stage of storage period, the containment of the canister may deteriorate due to stress corrosion cracking phenomena in a salty air environment. High resistant stainless steels against SCC have been tested as compared with normal stainless steel. Taking account of the limited time-length of environment with certain level of humidity and temperature range, the high resistant stainless steels will survive from SCC damage. In addit… more

Sampling and characterization of aerosols formed in the atmospheric hydrolysis of UF/sub 6/

Description: When gaseous UF/sub 6/ is released into the atmosphere, it rapidly reacts with ambient moisture to form an aerosol of uranyl fluoride and HF. As part of our Safety Analysis program, we have performed several experimental releases of UF/sub 6/ (from natural uranium) in contained volumes in order to investigate techniques for sampling and characterizing the aerosol materials. The aggregrate particle morphology and size distribution have been found to be dependent upon several conditions, includin… more
