Auger study of surface carbon and oxygen on thorium following ion bombardment

Description: The composition of a thorium metal surface has been monitored using Auger electron spectroscopy following Ar/sup +/ bombardment at different temperatures. After extended Ar/sup +/ bombardment, enough contaminated overlayers were removed to expose a surface region containing only thorium, bulk impurities, and imbedded argon. Thermophysical properties of coal liquids. Seventh quarterly technical status report, April 1-June 30, 1981

Description: Measurements of rheological properties have been continued. Measurements at relatively low temperature (450 K) showed that a coarser coal grind shows substantially lower viscosity. It was also shown that coal and solvent obtained from the Fort Lewis plant give slurries of much higher viscosity than slurries from our reference coal and solvent. Elastic moduli, thermal expansion, and inferred permeability of Climax quartz monzonite and Sudbury gabbro to 500/sup 0/C and 55 MPa

Description: Young's modulus (E), bulk modulus (K), and the coefficient of thermal linear expansion (..cap alpha..) have been determined for Climax quartz monzonite to 500/sup 0/C and pressures (P) to 55 MPa and for Sudbury gabbro to 300/sup 0/C and 55 MPa. For each rock, both E and K decreased with T and increased with P in a nonlinear manner. Analysis of measurements of the thermal conductivity of liquid urania

Description: An analysis was performed of the three existing measurements of the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of molten uranium dioxide. A transient heat transfer code (THTB) was used for this analysis. A much smaller range of values for thermal conductivity than originally reported was found: the original values ranged from 2.4 to 11 W . m/sup -1/ . K/sup -1/, with a mean of 7.3 W . m/sup -1/ . Summary report of BCC ion correlation experiment. [800 to 1000/sup 0/C; voids; swelling; Ni/sup 2//sup+/, Mo/sup+/, Cu/sup 4//sup+/, and H/sup+/ ions]

Description: An interlaboratory program was established to compare the radiation damage produced in Mo at 800 to 1000/sup 0/C by different ions of different energies. The program included comparisons of microstructures produced by different ions, of measurements on a round robin TEM specimen, and of measurements on a common micrograph. Results are discussed. Ions used included Ni/sup 2 +/, Mo/sup +/, Cu/sup 4 +/, and H/sup +/.

Corrosion of High-Temperature Alloys in Sulfur-Bearing Cracked-Ammonia Atmospheres

Description: A representative selection of stainless alloys was exposed in sulfur- bearing cracked-ammonia atmospheres containing 43 vol. % water vapor. Experimentally controlled variables have included temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1800 deg F and S levels ranging from zero to 350 grains per 100 ft/sup 3/ of cracked ammonia. Determination of Suitable Insulation for a 1-5/16" Helium Filled Annulus in the Orr Helium in-Pile Loop, Design No. 4

Description: Heat loss tests were conducted with six insulation configurations for application in the riser regenerator and auxiliary regenerator sections of the loop. Insulation consisting of ten laminations of 0.003 in. stainless steel shim stock spaced 1/8 inch apart produced a temperature drop across the 15/16 inch annulus of 1200 F with a heat loss of 1.04 KW per foot of 2 inch schedule 40 pipe. Description: Three vaporization experiments were performed on samples of nearly stoichiometric titanium monoxide. Two experiments were constant temperature experiments (1806/sup 0/K) designed to measure the equilibrium vapor pressures of Ti(g) and TiO(g). A MANOMETRIC METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF OXYGEN IN ORGANIC COMPOUNDS

Description: A vacuum analytical method for the determination of oxygen in organic compounds was developed. Several milligrams (usually 3 to 5 mg) of the organic to be analyzed are sealed in an evacuated quartz bomb along with 2.5 to 3.5 mg of an organic reducing agent.
