Startup and Initial Testing of SM-1 Core II With Special Components

Description: The loading operation for SM-1 Core II is described. Results of startup physics measurements (Test A-300 (Series) and fission product iodine monitoring in the primary coolant are given. Supporting Analysis for Thermal Suitability of Fuel Elements for SM-1A Core I Loading

Description: A recommended SM-1A Core I loading chart was derived from available, metallurgically acceptable elements at the SM-1A and SM-1 sites. The derivation was based on local thermal and hydraulic considerations of minimum elementto- element coolant channel clearances. These clearances were determined from field inspection measurements of outer fuel plate spacing, as modified by analytical calculations of plate ripple growth during exposure to reactor operating thermal stresses. The Electrical Resistivity of Molten and Solid Thorium-Magnesium Eutetic

Description: Electrical resistivity properties of polycrystalline 39 wt % thorium-- magnesium eutectic are reported for the solid from room temperature to its melting point at 589 deg C and as a liquid from its melting point to 900 deg C. The electrical resistivity of the eutectic at the melting point was 69.5 microhm- centimeters; it decreased to a value of 64.8 microhm-centimeters at 900 C. Tantalum tubing was used to contain the alloy in the molten state. (auth)

Description: A parametric study was made for the POPR with temperature gradients of 610 to 670 deg F and 6l0 to 684.5 deg F at organic flow rates of 17.8 x l0/sup 6/ and l4.4 x l0/sup 6/ lbs/hr, respectively; and steam turbine conditions at the throttle of 600 and 650 deg F at 800 to l200 psig. Nuclear magnetic resonance study of metallic scandium chlorides

Description: The /sup 45/Sc nuclear magnetic resonance was studied in samples having the general composition CsSc/sub x/Cl/sub 3/ (0.67 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.0) in the CsCl-ScCl/sub 3/-Sc system. Oxidation/gasification of carbon residue on retorted oil shale. Final report

Description: Studies of the oxidation and gasification of oil shale char were extended to an investigation of the effects of mineral catalysis. Six shales with differing mineral compositions were studied, including samples from the saline zone in the Western Colorado and from the Antrim shales of Michigan. Oxidation kinetics data, corrected for mass transfer effects, were compared for all six samples. Emission Characteristics of Tantalum, Tungsten, Rhenium, and Iridium in Plasma Diodes

Description: Experimental determinations of the ionic and electronic emission characteristics of Ta, W, Re, and lr cathodes in vapor thermionic converters are compared. It is shown that Ta provides superior thermal ionization qualities at high pressure compared with W, Re, and Lr. High electronic current densities may be obtained from Cs on Re and Cs on Ir at much lower Cs vapor pressures than from Ta or W. An over-all efficiency of 19% was achieved with a Re cathode at 2440 deg K. (auth)

Description: Behavior of zirconium alloy clad UO{sub 2} fuel elements in steam and air at 100 deg C to the melting point of UO{sub 2} was studied. Heating tests of Zircaloy-4 tubes with internal pressure show that steam oxidation of the metal results in lower deformation rates, less deformation, and higher failure temperature.
