High-Frequency Titration as Applied to the Determination of Thorium, Uranium, Sulfate, and Free Acid. Parts 1-51

Description: The technique of high-frequency titrimetry was applied to the determination of thorium, uranium, sulfate, and free acid. In Part I, the reproducibility of the method for the titration of standard solutions that contained 50 rag of thorium in the absence of interferences is established. Under these conditions, the coefficient of variation of the method was <1%. In Part II, the effect of uranium on the highfrequency titration of thorium, as well as the application of the method to actual samples,… more

Spectrophotometric Determination of Copper in Yttrium Metal With Neocuproine

Description: The neocuproine colorimetric method was applied to the determination of copper in yttrium metal. From 5 to 80 - g of copper was determined in the presence of as much as 5OO mg of yttrium with a coefficient of variation of 2%. Copper was reduced to copper (I) with hydroxylamine and complexed with neocuproine (2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline). The colored complex was extracted into chloroform and its absorbance measured, after dilution with ethanol, at 457 m - . (auth)

Radiation Chemistry of Thymine in Aqueous Alkaline Solution

Description: Gamma radiolysis of thymine solutions was investigated over a wide pH range using ultraviolet absorption spectra and two-dimensional paper chromatography combined with radioautography. The results show that as the pH is increased, the spectrum change for a given dose decreases, G(H/sub 2/O/sub 2/) increases, and G(organic peroxides) decreases. Sevrral compounds were isolated from irradiated neutral or acidic solutions of thymine, while in strongly alkaline solutions, only hydroxymethyl uracil w… more

Invention Report - Development of a Solution to Oxidize and Dissolve Uranium Metal and Its Oxides

Description: Decontamination of a high-temperature pressurizedwater reactor core- coolant recirculation system following a fuel element cladding failure requires the dissolution of uranium oxides + uranium metal. An oxalic--peroxide-peracetic solution was developed which was found to be superior to other solutions for this task. The solution composition is: oxalic acid, 2.3 g/l: sodium oxalate, 32.0 g/ l; hydrogen peroxide, 15.0 g/l; 8-quinolinol, 1.0 g/l; and 40% peracetic acid, 12.5 g/l. 8-Quinolinol supp… more
