Strangeness exchange reactions and hypernuclei

Description: Recent progress in the spectroscopy of ..lambda.. and ..sigma.. hypernuclei is reviewed. Prospects for the production of doubly strange hypernuclei at a future kaon factory are assessed. It is suggested that the (K/sup -/,K/sup +/) reaction on a nuclear target may afford an optimal way of producing the H dibaryon, a stable six quark object with J/sup ..pi../ = O/sup +/, S = -2.

Recent Progress in Electron Scattering at SLAC

Description: A new experiment on ep elastic scattering at large momentum transfer, Experiment E136, has recently completed data taking. A new measurement of deep inelastic electron scattering from nuclear targets, Experiment E139, has been completed and preliminary results are available. A new program of experiments has begun, called Nuclear Physics at SLAC (NPAS), that will use a new injector on the SLAC linac to provide high intensity beams in the energy range from 0.5 to 6 GeV.

Evaluation of severe accident risks: Quantification of major input parameters

Description: This report records part of the vast amount of information received during the expert judgment elicitation process that took place in support of the NUREG-1150 effort sponsored by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The results of the Containment Loads and Molten Core/Containment Interaction Expert Panel Elicitation are presented in this part of Volume 2 of NUREG/CR-4551. The Containment Loads Expert Panel considered seven issues: (1) hydrogen phenomena at Grand Gulf; (2) hydrogen burn at vā€¦ more

Measurement of the A-dependence of the EMC effect and R in deep-inelastic electron scattering from nuclei

Description: Significant differences in the inelastic structure functions of Fe, Al, and deuterium nuclei have recently been observed in muon and electron scattering experiments. This has been interpreted as a distortion of the quark momentum distributions in bound nucleons. To study the A-dependence of this effect, we have measured differential cross sections for the inelastic scattering of electrons from deuterium, He, Be, C, Al, Ca, Fe, Ag, and Au over a large kinematic range (x values between 0.09 and 0ā€¦ more

Effects of helium content of microstructural development in Type 316 stainless steel under neutron irradiation

Description: This work investigated the sensitivity of microstructural evolution, particularly precipitate development, to increased helium content during thermal aging and during neutron irradiation. Helium (110 at. ppM) was cold preinjected into solution annealed (SA) DO-heat type 316 stainess steel (316) via cyclotron irradiation. These specimens were then exposed side by side with uninjected samples. Continuous helium generation was increased considerably relative to EBR-II irradiation by irradiation inā€¦ more

A-Dependence of Deep-Inelastic Electron Scattering From Nuclei

Description: The deep inelastic electron scattering cross sections per nucleon sigma/sub A/ for d, He, Be, C, Al, Ca, Fe, Ag, and Au were measured in the kinematic range 0.09 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.9 and 2 less than or equal to Q/sup 2/ less than or equal to 15 (GEV/c)/sup 2/ using electrons with energies ranging from 8 to 24.5 GeV. The ratio sigma/sub A//sigma/sub d/ is consistent with unity in the range 0.1 < x < 0.3. For 0.3 < x < 0.8, the ratio decreases logarithmically with atoā€¦ more

TCT hybrid preconceptual blanket design studies

Description: The conceptual design of a tokamak fusion-fission (hybrid) reactor, which produces electric power and fissile material, has been performed in a cooperative effort between Princeton's Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and Battelle's Pacific Northwest Laboratories (PNL). PPPL, who had overall project lead responsibility, designed the fusion driver system. Its core consists of a tokamak plasma maintained in the two-component torus (TCT) mode by both D and T beams and having a single null poloidal dā€¦ more

Pion single charge exchange. [Angular distribution, cross sections, preliminary results, 200 MeV]

Description: The LAMPF ..pi../sup 0/ spectrometer is described, and the first results of pion single charge exchange to discrete nuclear states are discussed. Angular distribution information was obtained in /sup 3/He, and 0/sup 0/ excitation functions for the isobaric analog state were observed in targets throughout the periodic table. 8 references.

RCRA Facilities Assessment (RFA)---Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Description: US Department of Energy (DOE) facilities are required to be in full compliance with all federal and state regulations. In response to this requirement, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has established a Remedial Action Program (RAP) to provide comprehensive management of areas where past and current research, development, and waste management activities have resulted in residual contamination of facilities or the environment. This report presents the RCRA Facility Assessment (RFA) requiā€¦ more

Evaluation of severe accident risks: Quantification of major input parameters: MAACS (MELCOR Accident Consequence Code System) input

Description: Estimation of offsite accident consequences is the customary final step in a probabilistic assessment of the risks of severe nuclear reactor accidents. Recently, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission reassessed the risks of severe accidents at five US power reactors (NUREG-1150). Offsite accident consequences for NUREG-1150 source terms were estimated using the MELCOR Accident Consequence Code System (MACCS). Before these calculations were performed, most MACCS input parameters were reviewed, and fā€¦ more
