Development of ultrafiltration and inorganic adsorbents for reducing volumes of low-level and intermediate-level liquid waste: January--March 1978

Description: The exposure of noncellulosic ultrafiltration membranes to a radioactive environment simulating up to 24 months of exposure to a beta dose of 10 ..mu..Ci/cm/sup 3/ and a gamma dose of 10/sup -5/ ..mu..Ci/cm/sup 3/ did not show any conclusive evidence of membrane degradation. Viscosity measurements for control membranes and irradiated membranes indicate no changes in polymer molecular weight were caused by the radiation exposure. This, in turn, suggests no physical or mechanical degradation took… more

Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence Excitations Near 2 MeV in 235U and 239Pu

Description: A search for nuclear resonance fluorescence excitations in {sup 235}U and {sup 239}Pu within the energy range of 1.0- to 2.5-MeV was performed using a 4-MeV continuous bremsstrahlung source at the High Voltage Research Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Measurements utilizing high purity Ge detectors at backward angles identified 9 photopeaks in {sup 235}U and 12 photopeaks in {sup 239}Pu in this energy range. These resonances provide unique signatures that allow the mater… more

Gamma spectra of the 234, 235, and 238 uranium isotopes. [Tables, curves]

Description: Eight sources of uranium of varying /sup 235/U enrichment were used to collect detailed ..gamma..-ray spectra with a GeLi detector over the energy range from 50 to 250 keV. The characteristic x rays of thorium and uranium were identified. Included in the spectra were ..gamma.. rays present in the decay of the 234, 235, and 238 uranium isotopes. The efficiency of the detector was determined and used to calculate both conversion coefficients for the /sup 234/U decay ..gamma.. rays and the abundan… more

Analytical laboratories method No. 4017 - the radiometric nondestructive analysis of Uranium-235 in uranium tetrafluoride

Description: This method permits the nondestructive measurement of U-235 in uranium tetrafluoride (UF/sub 4/) using a Ge(Li) gamma spectrometer. The method was evaluated for UF/sub 4/ in the 0.20 to 1.25 wt% U-235 concentration range, but it could be easily extended to higher U-235 concentrations by using the appropriate standard. A nondestructive U-235 measurement can be performed in about 20 minutes. No measurement interferences have been observed.
