Forced-Convection Heat Transfer to Water at High Pressures and Temperatures in the Nonboiling Region

Description: "Forced-convection heat-transfer data have been obtained for water flowing in an electrically heated tube of circular cross section at water pressures of 200 and 2000 pounds per square inch, and temperatures in the nonboiling region, for water velocities ranging between 5 and 25 feet per second. The results indicate that conventional correlations can be used to predict heat-transfer coefficients for water at pressures up to 2000 pounds per square inch and temperatures in the nonboiling region" (p. 1).

Preliminary Results of Heat Transfer from a Stationary and Rotating Ellipsoidal Spinner

Description: "Convective heat-transfer coefficients in dry air were obtained for an ellipsoidal spinner of 30-inch maximum diameter for both stationary and rotating operation over a range of conditions including airspeeds up to 275 miles per hour, rotational speeds up to 1200 rpm, and angles of attack of zero and 4 degrees. The results are presented in terms of Nusselt numbers, Reynolds numbers, and convective heat-transfer coefficients. The studies included both uniform heating densities over the spinner and uniform surface temperatures" (p. 1).

Transmission of Heat From a Flat Plate to a Fluid Flowing at a High Velocity

Description: "The writer, starting with the consideration of the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic equations for the turbulent boundary layer of a flat plate when it is necessary to take into account the heat produced by friction, arrives at the conclusion that the transmission of the heat follows the same law that is valid when the frictional heat is negligible, provided the temperature of the fluid is considered to be that which the fluid would reach if arrested adiabatically. It is then shown how the same law holds good for faired bodies, and some applications of the law are made to the problems of flight at very high speeds" (p. 1).

The Transference of Heat From a Hot Plate to an Air Stream

Description: The object of the present study was to define experimentally the field of temperature and velocity in a heated flat plate when exposed to an air stream whose direction is parallel to it, then calculate therefrom the heat transference and the friction past the flat plate, and lastly, compare the test data with the mathematical theory. To ensure comparable results, we were to actually obtain or else approximate: a) two-dimensional flow; b) constant plate temperature in the direction of the stream. To approximate the flow in two dimensions, we chose a relatively wide plate and measured the velocity and temperature in the median plane.

Extension of boundary-layer heat-transfer theory to cooled turbine blades

Description: An equation for average heat transfer of a surface was derived when the boundary layer changed from laminar to turbulent. Influences on the heat transfer through a laminar boundary layer of Mach number, temperature ratio (gas temperature divided by wall temperature), and exponents of gas-property temperature relations were shown to be relatively small for air with Mach numbers less than 2 and temperature ratios between 1 and 4. Good agreement was obtained with experimental results from cylinders, an airfoil, and turbine blades.

Description: "A heat-transfer investigation was conducted with air flowing through an electrically heated silicon carbide tube with a rounded entrance, an inside diameter of 3/4 inch, and an effective heat-transfer length of 12 inches over a range of Reynolds numbers up to 300,000 and a range of average inside-tube-wall temperature up to 2500 R. The highest corresponding local outside-tube-wall temperature was 3010 R. Correlation of the heat-transfer data using the conventional Nueselt relation wherein physical properties of the fluid were evaluated at average bulk temperature resulted in a separation of data with tube-wall-temperature level" (p. 1).
