Hat

Description: Raised beret-style hat of creme felt. Stiffened body of hat has a sienna/orange-brown grosgrain ribbon bow at top of crown, with tails of bow extending to sides, along front to edge, and trailing off of the back of the hat. The hat is surmounted by a light-brown plume of ostrich feathers. Inside of brim lined with black grosgrain ribbon. There is a thin black elastic strap to go around the back of the head to secure the hat. Label sewn to inside band: "Walter Florell / 29 East 53rd New York".

Festival ensemble

Description: a ) Robe of red woven silk with embroidered ram's horn motif trim. Below-knee length. Center-front opening with no closure. Vertical black seaming. Wide embroidered band around neckline of geometric forms and "ram's horns" forms in black, yellow, and white on base of checker-board/mountain forms of same colors. Band narrows slightly and continues down to edge center front opening then turns to edge hem of robe. Slight triangular slits at hem at sides, embroidery frames and radiates from slits. 3/4 to full-length sleeves, with wide black bands at cuffs. On "front" of cuffs are upper and lower borders of embroidery on the black bands, of the same patterns as rest of the jacket. Back is plain other than hem embroidery. Jacket is fully lined in red cotton cloth printed with bold floral pattern of blue roses touched with white, and reddish foliage. The field of the cloth has small scattered blue and white squares. Embroidery bands are backed with brownish red fabric with woven stripes of yellow and black. One cuff lined in purple, one in pink/white/pale purple printed cotton fabric. No labels or tags in garment. b ) Headpiece. Based on a low cylindrical cap which may be coiled or embroidered/quilted, the headpiece is covered with circular silver repousse discs, and surmounted by a sphere with a central "spike" from which hang three bells and three oval plaques on short chains. Around base of sphere is a band of cowrie shells. Around the lower edge of the cap is a band of silver fringe of short chains and small bells. At left and right side are narrow pendant strips of multi-colored cloth edged in black, and mounted with further repousse plaques, the lowest ones with simulated gems and pendant chains and "fringe" of scraps of silver. Stiffened brim with twenty-four rows of horizontal burgundy topstitching. Burgundy grosgrain ribbon headband. Fully lined in gold metallic organza over white organza. Description: Fascinator hat of yellow silk satin. Small pillbox style crown with large matching satin bow at back. Lined in golden fabric with golden yellow headband of grosgrain ribbon. Two small plastic combs to secure hat to wearer's head. Designer's label inside crown at back: "Balenciaga / 10 Avenue George V Paris" Second label sewn to bottom of designer's label: "Made in France". Description: Man's hat (fulani). Handwoven natural plant fiber, trimmed in Nguni leather. The leather was originally dyed red with natural pigments with the intention of fading. There is a black design woven into the natural fiber.

Description: Hatlet of pale yellow/gold slub silk. Designed as a small turban, the conic crown is formed as a swirl of silk pleats with shallow, 1/2" upturned edge at base simulating a brim, with a narrow 1/4 inch wide hat band of same fabric. A small bow of the same fabric is at back of cap on lower edge. Lined in a yellow/gold silk with gold rickrack headband along inside bottom edge. Two elastic cords at inner edge indicate hat had combs for attaching to wearer's head, now missing. Designer's label inside at back: "Sue Dooley / Dallas" Measurements: 15 cm. front to back; 15.5 cm. side to side; 11 cm. from top of crown to base.

Description: Hat of beige straw. The low, slightly domed crown is of woven medium beige straw. Around the crown is wrapped a wide horizontally pleated/ruched band of cream organza, secured at one side with a large "pin" wrapped in yellow grosgrain. From the pin hang two circular metal charms, each with rhinestone border and each with a relief depicting a woman in wide, standing, lace collar. The moderate width brim is of the same woven straw, set slightly off-center so that there is more brim at front and sides than at back. The brim is turned up on all sides. Unlined with a headband of golden yellow velvet. Combs at sides for securing hat to head. Manufacturer's label sewn to inner hatband: "Paris / Alfreda / Inc. / New York"; Retailer's label sewn to inner hatband: "Walker-Marr / Dallas"

Description: Pillbox inspired hat of striped fabric. The low-crowned cylindrical hat is covered in a gray fabric having red, green, black, white, and gold stripes reminiscent of a man's tie. Around the crown the fabric is pleated and draped, giving the effect of a low turban. Lined in a hot pink satin, with dusty rose pink grosgrain ribbon headband. Description: Hat in pamela/halo style. The hat is formed of a body of stiffened white net. The crown is domed, and has scattered white artificial flowers (4-petaled, possibly stylized dogwood, apple blossoms, or narcissus). The wide brim is upturned at outside to form a deep "well" around the crown, and is more thickly covered with the artificial flowers, primarily on the underside of the brim, from the crown outwards to the upturned edge.
