Residual gravity analysis of selected cross sections of the Hanford reservation

Description: Gravity data were collected along selected sites on the Hanford reservation. Residual gravity profiles were calculated. These data were then modeled using the Talwani two-dimensional gravity model. Analysis of these models suggests the location of several buried stream channels. The northern channel is believed to represent the ancestral Columbia when it flowed through a synclinal trough between Gable Mountain and Gable Butte, and the southern channel is believed to reflect a previous location … more

Radioactive Fallout From Chinese Nuclear Weapons Test

Description: Radioactive fallout from this Chinese nuclear test resulted in measurable deposition of short-lived debris over much of the United States. The fallout levels varied by more than 1000-fold and showed significant temporary or spatial fractionation with higher levels of deposition being associated with rain. The particle size with which the airborne debris was associated decreased continuously with time following detonation and a substantial fraction of the {sup 131}I was associated with inorganic… more

Selection of heat disposal methods for a Hanford Nuclear Energy Center

Description: Selection of the best method for disposal of the waste heat from a large power generation center requires a comprehensive comparison of the costs and environmental effects. The objective is to identify the heat dissipation method with the minimum total economic and environmental cost. A 20 reactor HNEC will dissipate about 50,000 MWt of waste heat; a 40 reactor HNEC would release about 100,000 MWt. This is a much larger discharge of heat than has occurred from other concentrated industrial faci… more

Conceptual and mathematical modeling of the Hanford groundwater flow regime

Description: Disposal of radioactive wastes to surface disposal sites at the Hanford Atomic Reservation has resulted in some radioactive and chemical contamination of the underlying groundwater flow systems. In support of the Hanford groundwater management effort a preliminary conceptual model of the groundwater system has been formulated as a first step in understanding possible contaminant movement. The mathematical modeling capabilities needed for better understanding and prediction of such contaminant m… more

Characterization of small mammal populations inhabiting the B-C cribs environs

Description: The purpose of this study was to document the current status of small mammal populations inhibiting the 200 Area plateau near the B-C Crib management area and to compare them with populations inhabiting a protected (control) area within the confines of the Hanford ALE Reserve. Sampling sessions were conducted over two field seasons (1974 and 1975). A total of five species was detected within intensive study areas. These included the Great Basin pocket mouse (Perognathus parvus), deer mouse (Per… more

Temporal and spatial fall chinook salmon redd distribution near Hanford, 1967-1976

Description: Annual surveys of fall chinook salmon in the Hanford section (Ringold to Priest Rapids) of the Columbia River have been conducted annually since 1947. Estimates of the relative numbers of fall chinook spawning in this section of the river are obtained through several aerial surveys made each fall. The possible relationships of environmental factors to the size of the local salmon population have been reported for the period 1947 to 1969 (Watson 1970) and each year's survey results are summarize… more

Population distribution in 90 mile radius of Hanford Meteorological Station and projections to year 2300 by compass sector and 10 mile radii

Description: Total population in the 90 mile radius area of the Hanford Meteorological Station was estimated to be 446,000 in 1970. By 1980 the area population was expected to be about 468,000, an increase of more than 5 percent over 1970 levels. Between 1980 and the year 2000 another 52,000 persons were expected to be residing within the study area, an increase of nearly 12 percent. The year 2000 total will be in the neighborhood of 520,000. Our high estimate for 2300 indicates a study area population of 7… more
