Summary and highlights of the 14th Topical Conference on Hadron Collider Physics (HCP2002)

Description: First of all, I would like to thank the scientific committee, the conference organizers, the University of Karlsruhe and the Institute for Experimental Nuclear Physics, all of the speakers, and the conference secretariat, for making this an extremely well-organized and uniformly high-quality meeting. I would also like to thank all of the speakers who provided me with material for my talk before and during the conference. There is obviously no point in these proceedings in attempting to repeat all of the material from the individual contributions; by definition, these are all available earlier in this volume. In the written version, therefore, I will try to give a high level overview of the current state of hadron collider physics and to highlight the connections between the many presentations at this conference.

Phases of QCD: Summary of the Rutgers Long Range Plan Town Meeting, January 12-14, 2007

Description: This White Paper summarizes the outcome of the Town Meeting on Phases of QCD that took place January 12-14, 2007 at Rutgers University, as part of the NSAC 2007 Long Range Planning process. The meeting was held in conjunction with the Town Meeting on Hadron Structure, including a full day of joint plenary sessions of the two meetings. Appendix A.1 contains the meeting agenda. This Executive Summary presents the prioritized recommendations that were determined at the meeting. Subsequent chapters present the essential background to the recommendations. The light-cone Fock state expansion and hadron physics phenomenology

Description: The light-cone Fock expansion is defined in the following way: one first constructs the light-cone time evolution operator and the invariant mass operator in light-cone gauge from the QCD Lagrangian. The total longitudinal momentum and transverse momenta are conserved, i.e. are independent of the interactions. The matrix elements of the invariant mass operator on the complete orthonormal basis of the free theory can then be constructed. The matrix elements connect Fock states differing by 0, 1, or 2 quark or gluon quanta, and they include the instantaneous quark and gluon contributions imposed by eliminating dependent degrees of freedom in light-cone gauge. Applications of light-cone methods to QCD phenomenology are briefly described.

Jet algorithms at D0

Description: The D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton collider ({radical}s = 1.8 TeV) accumulated a large sample of high energy jet production data during Run 1 (1992-1996). Since March 2001, D0 has engaged in continuous data collection with an upgraded detector equipped for the higher energy ({radical}s = 1.96 TeV) and luminosity conditions of the Run 2 Tevatron. We summarize here pivotal measurements of Run 1 and consider their comparison to theoretical predictions and to other experiments. These factors elucidate D0's jet clustering algorithm strategy for Run 2 jet measurements. Preliminary measurements of jets from the Run 2 D0 experiment are also presented.

Performance of CDF for B physics

Description: Hadron colliders can be an abundant source of heavy flavor, but pose a challenge to isolate the physics signals from the high backgrounds. The upgraded CDFII detector, with its precise tracking capabilities and powerful trigger system, is well equipped for this task. The detector is described with an emphasis on actual performance and on techniques to maximize the heavy flavor yield. Some first heavy flavor results are summarized.

CDF: Run II Physics Projections

Description: In March 2001, the Fermilab Tevatron will start a new physics run of p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 2.0 TeV. The CDF experiments will collect a data sample of 2 fb{sup {minus}1} in the first two years. In this paper the authors describe the B physics prospects at CDF during the upcoming run.

The BTeV pixel detector and trigger system

Description: BTeV is an approved forward collider experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron dedicated to the precision studies of CP violation, mixing, and rare decays of beauty and charm hadrons. The BTeV detector has been designed to achieve these goals. One of the unique features of BTeV is a state-of-the-art pixel detector system, designed to provide accurate measurements of the decay vertices of heavy flavor hadrons that can be used in the first trigger level. The pixel vertex detector and the trigger design are described. Recent results on some of the achievements in the R and D effort are presented.

Report of the subgroup on alternative models and new ideas

Description: We summarize some of the work done by the P3 subgroup on Alternative Models and New Ideas. The working group covered a broad range of topics including a constrained Standard Model from an extra dimension, a discussion of recent ideas addressing the strong CP problem, searches for doubly charged higgs bosons in e{gamma} collisions, and an update on discovery limits for extra neutral gauge bosons at hadron colliders. The breadth of topics rejects the many ideas and approaches to physics beyond the Standard Model.

Recent results from CDF

Description: The authors report on the recent heavy-quark results from CDF in Run IIa. They focus on a selection of mature analyses that demonstrate the capabilities of the experiment to extract interesting physics from the data. A few of the results presented have already been submitted for publication and papers are being prepared for most of the others.

Top quark physics with CDF

Description: In this contributions to the proceedings of the HCP conference I will give a brief overview on the CDF upgrade for Run II relevant to top quark physics analyses. I will discuss the CDF top physics program, with particular emphasis to the search for single top quark production. This includes a review of single top quark analyses in Run I.

Status of CDF Run II Upgrade

Description: For the past several years, the CDF collaboration has been upgrading its detector to accommodate the higher luminosity and beam energy expected during Run II (2001-2006) at the Tevatron p{bar p} collider. Accelerator improvements include increasing the instantaneous luminosity by an order of magnitude with respect to Run I to 2 x 10{sup 32} cm{sup {minus}2} s{sup {minus}1} and increasing the center of mass energy from 1.8 TeV to 2.0 TeV. The detector upgrades include replacing the entire tracking volume, extending the muon coverage, adding a time of flight system, and improving the selection capabilities of the trigger. The partially instrumented detector underwent a commissioning run during September/October 2000 in preparation for starting data taking in Spring 2001 with the full detector. Now that Run II has been extended through 2006, we expect to collect an integrated luminosity of 2 fb{sup {minus}1} during the first two years of running and up to a total of 15 fb{sup {minus}1} by the end of Run II.

Evidence for light scalar resonances in charm meson decays from Fermilab E791

Description: From Dalitz-plot analyses of D{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +} and D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +} decays, we find evidence for light and broad scalar resonances {sigma}(500) and {kappa}(800). From a Dalitz-plot analysis of D{sub s}{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +} decays, they measure the masses and decay widths of the scalar resonances f{sub 0}(980) and f{sub 0}(1370).

Development of a single-layer Nb3Sn common coil dipole model

Description: A high-field dipole magnet based on the common coil design was developed at Fermilab for a future Very Large Hadron Collider. A short model of this magnet with a design field of 11 T in two 40-mm apertures is being fabricated using the react-and-wind technique. In order to study and optimize the magnet design two 165-mm long mechanical models were assembled and tested. A technological model consisting of magnet straight section and ends was also fabricated in order to check the tooling and the winding and assembly procedures. This paper describes the design and technology of the common coil dipole magnet and summarizes the status of short model fabrication.The results of the mechanical model tests and comparison with FE mechanical analysis are also presented.

B physics, BTeV, and all that

Description: The status of ''flavor physics'' in our pursuit of knowledge in elementary particle physics is discussed. Then, the BTeV experiment, planned for the Fermilab Tevatron collider, is described briefly and its physics reach is discussed. Comparisons are made to the current B physics experiments at e{sup +}e{sup -} facilities and to the LHCb experiment, planned for the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
