Summary and highlights of the 14th Topical Conference on Hadron Collider Physics (HCP2002)

Description: First of all, I would like to thank the scientific committee, the conference organizers, the University of Karlsruhe and the Institute for Experimental Nuclear Physics, all of the speakers, and the conference secretariat, for making this an extremely well-organized and uniformly high-quality meeting. I would also like to thank all of the speakers who provided me with material for my talk before and during the conference. There is obviously no point in these proceedings in attempting to repeat all of the material from the individual contributions; by definition, these are all available earlier in this volume. In the written version, therefore, I will try to give a high level overview of the current state of hadron collider physics and to highlight the connections between the many presentations at this conference.

Phases of QCD: Summary of the Rutgers Long Range Plan Town Meeting, January 12-14, 2007

Description: This White Paper summarizes the outcome of the Town Meeting on Phases of QCD that took place January 12-14, 2007 at Rutgers University, as part of the NSAC 2007 Long Range Planning process. The meeting was held in conjunction with the Town Meeting on Hadron Structure, including a full day of joint plenary sessions of the two meetings. Appendix A.1 contains the meeting agenda. This Executive Summary presents the prioritized recommendations that were determined at the meeting. Subsequent chapters present the essential background to the recommendations. Jet algorithms at D0

Description: The D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton collider ({radical}s = 1.8 TeV) accumulated a large sample of high energy jet production data during Run 1 (1992-1996). Since March 2001, D0 has engaged in continuous data collection with an upgraded detector equipped for the higher energy ({radical}s = 1.96 TeV) and luminosity conditions of the Run 2 Tevatron. We summarize here pivotal measurements of Run 1 and consider their comparison to theoretical predictions and to other experiments. These factors elucidate D0's jet clustering algorithm strategy for Run 2 jet measurements. Preliminary measurements of jets from the Run 2 D0 experiment are also presented.

Report of the subgroup on alternative models and new ideas

Description: We summarize some of the work done by the P3 subgroup on Alternative Models and New Ideas. The working group covered a broad range of topics including a constrained Standard Model from an extra dimension, a discussion of recent ideas addressing the strong CP problem, searches for doubly charged higgs bosons in e{gamma} collisions, and an update on discovery limits for extra neutral gauge bosons at hadron colliders. The breadth of topics rejects the many ideas and approaches to physics beyond the Standard Model.

Description: Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is developing ''React & Wind'' designs and technology for building long high field accelerator magnets. This paper presents the R&D program for interaction region (IR) magnets made with ''Rutherford'' cable for the luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This paper will introduce a few new end design concepts that make the bend radius of the cable in the end independent of the coil aperture. These designs are suitable for building magnets with ''React & Wind'' technology.

Heavy baryons - Recent and very new results

Description: Recent results on observations, properties and decay modes of the charmed and beauty baryons will be reviewed. Candidates for several new high mass states which include a cleanly-identified daughter {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +} baryon are seen in data from the SELEX experiment at Fermilab. These states are candidates for doubly-charmed baryons: a {Xi}{sub cc}{sup ++} state and a {Xi}{sub cc}{sup +} state. These candidates are more than 5{sigma} signals in each case at masses of 3520 and 3460 MeV respectively.

Snowmass 2001: Jet energy flow project

Description: Conventional cone jet algorithms arose from heuristic considerations of LO hard scattering coupled to independent showering. These algorithms implicitly assume that the final states of individual events can be mapped onto a unique set of jets that are in turn associated with a unique set of underlying hard scattering partons. Thus each final state hadron is assigned to a unique underlying parton. The Jet Energy Flow (JEF) analysis described here does not make such assumptions. The final states of individual events are instead described in terms of flow distributions of hadronic energy. Quantities of physical interest are constructed from the energy flow distribution summed over all events. The resulting analysis is less sensitive to higher order perturbative corrections and the impact of showering and hadronization than the standard cone algorithms.

Evidence for light scalar resonances in charm meson decays from Fermilab E791

Description: From Dalitz-plot analyses of D{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +} and D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +} decays, we find evidence for light and broad scalar resonances {sigma}(500) and {kappa}(800). From a Dalitz-plot analysis of D{sub s}{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +} decays, they measure the masses and decay widths of the scalar resonances f{sub 0}(980) and f{sub 0}(1370).

Supersymmetric Higgs Boson Pair Production: Discovery Prospects at Hadron Colliders

Description: We study the potential of hadron colliders in the search for the pair production of neutral Higgs bosons in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We perform a detailed signal and background analysis, working out efficient kinematical cuts for the extraction of the signal. The important role of squark loop contributions to the signal is re-emphasized. If the signal is sufficiently enhanced by these contributions, it could even be observable at the next run of the upgraded Tevatron collider in the near future. At the LHC the pair production of light and heavy Higgs bosons might be detectable simultaneously.

The light-cone Fock state expansion and hadron physics phenomenology

Description: The light-cone Fock expansion is defined in the following way: one first constructs the light-cone time evolution operator and the invariant mass operator in light-cone gauge from the QCD Lagrangian. The total longitudinal momentum and transverse momenta are conserved, i.e. are independent of the interactions. The matrix elements of the invariant mass operator on the complete orthonormal basis of the free theory can then be constructed. The matrix elements connect Fock states differing by 0, 1, or 2 quark or gluon quanta, and they include the instantaneous quark and gluon contributions imposed by eliminating dependent degrees of freedom in light-cone gauge. Applications of light-cone methods to QCD phenomenology are briefly described.

Hadron mass scaling in Regge phenomenology

Description: The authors show that Regge phenomenology is consistent with the only scaling law for the hadron masses, M{sup *}/M = ({alpha}{prime}/{alpha}{prime}{sup *}){sup 1/2}, where asterisk indicates a finite-temperature quantity. Phenomenological models further suggest the following expression of the above scaling in terms of the temperature-dependent gluon condensate: M{sup *}/M = ({alpha}{prime}/{alpha}{prime}{sup *}){sup 1/2} = (<G{sub {mu}{nu}}{sup {alpha}}>{sup *}/<G{sup {alpha}{mu}{nu}}>){sup 1/4}.

CDF: Run II Physics Projections

Description: In March 2001, the Fermilab Tevatron will start a new physics run of p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 2.0 TeV. The CDF experiments will collect a data sample of 2 fb{sup {minus}1} in the first two years. In this paper the authors describe the B physics prospects at CDF during the upcoming run.

Physics of low-lying hadrons in quark model and effective hadronic approaches. Final report, September 1, 1996 - March 31, 2000

Description: There were basically three theoretical projects supported by this grant: (1) Use of confined quark models to study low energy hadronic processes; (2) Production of strangeness by Electromagnetic Probes; and (3) Diffractive dissociative production of vector mesons by virtual photons on nucleons. Each of them is summarized in the paper.
