The pp elastic scattering experiment at RHIC and polarization studies in the Coulomb Nuclear Interference region

Description: We have examined the feasibility of measuring proton proton (pp) elastic scattering at small four momentum transfer t. The application of the measurement as a polarimeter in the Coulomb Nuclear Interference (CNI) region for polarized pp collisions is discussed. In addition, other fundamental polarization phenomena can be explored by making use of the same setup. The configuration of the lattice of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) which allows the measurement of scattering in CHI regio… more

Search for the top quark and other new particles at D0

Description: Preliminary results from the search for the top quark and other new particles in p[bar p] collisions at [radical]s = 1.8 TeV are reported. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 7.5 pb[sup [minus]1], one candidate event for top quark is found in the di-lepton channel. A lower limit for the mass of the top quark of 103 GeV/c[sup 2] (99 Gev/c[sup 2]) is obtained at 95% confidence level with (without) background subtraction. Status of searches for other new particles t… more

Resonances in the [Sigma]NN system

Description: We first review certain unique aspects of few-body [Alpha]- hypernuclei and then explore the physics of [summation] threshold in few-body elastic scattering and reactions. In particular, we discuss a predicted enhancement in the [Alpha]d cross section near the [summation]NN threshold in terms of poles in the [Tau]=0YNN amplitude. A brief discussion of anticipated poles in the [Tau]=1 amplitudes is also given.

Incident energy dependence of hadronic activity

Description: Two features of high-energy hadronic cascades have been long known to shielding specialists: (a) in a high-energy hadronic cascade in a given material (incident E [approx equal] 10 GeV), the relative abundance and spectrum of each hadronic species responsible for most of the energy deposition is independent of the energy or species of the incident hadron, and (b) because [pi][sup 0] production bleeds off more and more energy into the electromagnetic sector as the energy of the incident hadron i… more

Experimental particle physics at the University of Pittsburgh. [Dept. of Physics and Astronomy]

Description: During the past year on Task A, the HELIOS work drew to a close with first results from the electron-muon pair studies (no anomalous sources are seen, and the final results and uncertainties are being set). First data from CMD2 will allow improvement of some phi branching ratios, including some improved limits on forbidden decays. The engineering run for E865 is scheduled for June and July of 1993. The principal efforts of Task B, the Fermilab program, have been the completion of the analysis o… more

PHENIX Conceptual Design Report

Description: The PHENIX Conceptual Design Report (CDR) describes the detector design of the PHENIX experiment for Day-1 operation at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The CDR presents the physics capabilities, technical details, cost estimate, construction schedule, funding profile, management structure, and possible upgrade paths of the PHENIX experiment. The primary goals of the PHENIX experiment are to detect the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and to measure its properties. Many of the potential sign… more

Strangeness production with protons and pions

Description: We discuss the spectrum of physics questions related to strangeness which could be addressed with intense beams of protons and pions in the few GeV region. We focus on various aspects of strangeness production, including hyperon production in pp collisions, studies of hyperon-nucleon scattering, production of hypernuclei in proton and pion-nucleus collisions, and spin phenomena in hypernuclei.

HIJET with AGS physics and N[sup *]'s

Description: We investigate the effects of secondary interactions in nucleus- nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions using a modified HIJET Monte Carlo generator. The effects of N[sup *] production is explored and it is found that the numbers of kaons can almost be explained by their inclusion. However the transverse momentum spectrum of the kaons is not explained, since their production in HIJET is a soft secondary scattering process and not a hot thermal process like the data.

Polarization and color transparency

Description: Color transparency offers an interesting experimental test of our understanding of hadronic polarization effects which have been seen at high energy. Large polarization effects have been seen for exclusive high momentum transfer reactions which are incompatible with lowest order pQCD. It is proposed to filter these reactions by scattering inside a nucleus. We expect that only color transparent hadrons would survive, and that these should be products of hard'' scattering. If the polarization arr… more

Some outstanding issues in pion scattering at energies above the [Delta] resonance

Description: The [Delta](1232) resonance dominates pion-nucleon scattering at energies below 300 MeV, the region in which pion-nucleus scattering has been well studied using spectrometers at the meson factories. Above this energy region little pion-nucleus scattering data exists. Recently, spectrometers at Brookhaven, LAMPF, KEK, and DUBNA have been used to obtain initial data for pion-nucleus scattering in this energy region. In this talk we review some data that have been obtained using the LAS spectromet… more

These include constraints on the shape and normalization of the polarized quark and gluon structure functions of the proton; the principle of hadron helicity retention in high x[sub F] inclusive reactions; predictions based on total hadron helicity conservation in high momentum transfer exclusive reactions; the dependence of nuclear structure functions an… more

Strange meson spectroscopy in K[omega] and K[phi] at 11 GeV/c and Cherenkov ring imaging at SLD

Description: This thesis consists of two independent parts; development of Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector (CRID) system and analysis of high-statistics data of strange meson reactions from the LASS spectrometer. Part 1: The CRID system is devoted to charged particle identification in the SLAC Large Detector (SLD) to study e[sup +]e[sup [minus]] collisions at [radical]s = m[sub Z[sup 0]]. The author looks both at the technology of the machines, and how it will have to be developed for future devices, and the effort required to extract the important physics information from the resulting reaction cascades which are exected to come out of these devices.

Search for the top quark from (e,[mu]) and (e,e) events in the D0 detector in p[bar p] collisions at [radical]s = 1. 8 TeV

Description: We present results from searches for top quark production in p[bar p] collisions at the Tevatron collider based on an integrated luminosity of 7.5 pb[sup [minus]1] obtained during the 1992--1993 ran. The present results are confined to decay modes where both the top and anti-top quarks in the event decay semi-leptonically to the ee and e[mu] channels. A lower limit of 103 (99) GeV/c[sup 2] is obtained at 95% confidence level for the top quark mass from the absence of events consistent with stan… more

E789 and P865: High-rate fixed-target studies of charm and beauty

Description: Experiment 789 at Fermilab used the high-rate E605/E772 spectrometer to study low-multiplicity charm and beauty decays. Preliminary results on charm and beauty production are presented based on analysis of [approx] 100% of the charm data and [approx] 50% of the beauty data.
