Recent experimental results on the beam-beam effects in storage rings and an attempt of their interpretation

Description: The latest available experimental results on the luminosity, the space charge parameters, and the beam blowup as functions of particle energy and beam current are reviewed. The comparison with the phenomenological diffusion theory is done and useful scaling laws are derived. Some implications for anti p p storage rings are discussed.

Heavy mass states

Description: The indirect evidence for the production of a heavy lepton and direct evidence for the product of a new hadronic state or states in proton-proton interactions is considered for the interpretation requiring the existence of two more leptons and two new quarks. It is shown that such a picture is consistent and in good agreement with existing data. The new structure is located at M = 9.54 GeV/c/sup 2/ and is much wider than the experimental resolution. Also it is asymmetric, suggesting the presenc… more

A study of tau decays of the W boson at CDF (Collider Detector at Fermilab)

Description: A report is given of a search for tau decays of the W boson in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV using the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). A description of a hardware trigger specifically designed to enhance the number of events with tau decays is presented along with the results of a preliminary analysis of data taken during the 1988--89 run of CDF. 10 refs., 4 figs.

Initial energy density of quark-gluon plasma in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Description: Recently, there has been considerable interest in the central rapidity region of highly relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Such an interest stems from the possibility of creating hadron matter of high energy density which may exceed the critical energy density for a phase transition between ordinary confined matter and the unconfined quark-gluon plasma. The experimental searches and identification of the quark-gluon plasma may provide a new insight into the question of quark confinement. The es… more

Anomalous low mass e/sup +/e/sup -/ pair production in 17 GeV/c. pi. /sup -/p collisions

Description: An experiment was performed at the Multiparticle Spectrometer using 17 GeV/c ..pi../sup -/ from the BNL AGS, triggering upon inclusive e/sup +/e/sup -/ production. Electron identification was based on two transition radiator detectors and lead-scintillator shower detectors. Good acceptance for the e/sup +/e/sup -/ pair covered the region x/sub F/ > 0.3 for all p/sub T/ and pair masses. Charged particles and photons associated with the e/sup +/e/sup -/ pair are detected over a large solid ang… more

Antiproton driven microfission-fusion on closer inspection

Description: A closer look at the energetics of antiproton annihilation in real systems, coupled to hydrodynamics, materials strength, particle transport, equations of state, and related interactions is necessary to assess ultimate viability. The systematics of antiproton microfission-fusion are the subject of this analysis, as well as technology constraints.

Hadron-hadron physics at high energy and luminosity

Description: I review some recent theoretical issues relevant to the physics of hadron-hadron collisions. I discuss processes where either energy or luminosity is the most important feature and emphasize the need for experiments at luminosities of 10{sup 33}cm{sup -2}sec{sup 1} if the full range of physics options is to be thoroughly explored. 22 refs., 10 figs.

Fermi molecular dynamics

Description: classical many body models supplemented by repulsive momentum-dependent potentials to simulate the Pauli and Heisenberg principles have been use with some success for nuclear and atomic bound state and collision problems. They are capable of describing mean ground state properties, hydrodynamics, shocks (if warranted by the physics), viscosity, correlations, clustering, fragmentation, etc. We have become interested in the Feldmeier Gaussian packet formulation since it is based on a variational … more

Formation of a quark-gluon plasma in nuclear collisions

Description: The spatial dependence of the energy deposition in the fragmentation regions is estimated for nuclear collisions at ISR energies, ..sqrt..s/A >approx. 30 GeV/nucleon. Two models (the trailing cascade and sequential decay scenarios) are contrasted. The results are compared to the quark-gluon plasma energy density computed via QCD lattice methods.

Experimental Determination of the Effective Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction for P-Nucleus Reactions at Intermediate Energies

Description: A complete measurement of the polarization transfer observables has been made for the first time in the (p,p') reaction at intermediate energies. Measurements are reported for the /sup 12/C(p,p') /sup 12/C reaction to the 1/sup +/, T = 0(12.71 MeV) and 1/sup +/, T = 1(15.11 MeV) states at 500 MeV at laboratory scattering angles of 3.5/sup 0/, 5.5/sup 0/, 7.5/sup 0/, and 12.0/sup 0/. Linear combinations of these observables are shown to exhibit a very selective dependence on the isoscalar and is… more

Tests of parity and time reversal invariance in neutron-nucleus scattering

Description: I'll discuss the experiments in which parity violation has been measured in low energy neutron-nucleus scattering. The interest is two-fold: to understand how parity violation in the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction manifests itself in a complicated many-body system and to show that the large enhancements observed make this a good laboratory to search for violations of TRI. Further, the procedure of relating the measured parity violating asymmetries to the under-lying NN interaction will be imp… more

T,b, and new particle searches at p p colliders

CDF has signals for {Beta}{sup {plus minus}} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup {plus minus}} and {Beta}{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup *0}. Calculations of anti pp. -->. anti yy near threshold

Description: The reactions anti pp ..-->.. anti yy will soon be studied near threshold at LEAR. Comparison of theoretical calculations with the measured differential cross sections, polarizations and spin correlations may help to determine the role of various meson exchange terms and the extent to which quark degrees of freedom are important. Calculations along these lines are in progress and are described briefly.

Production of the doubly strange H dibaryon

Description: There is much current interest in the spectroscopy of multiquark states. In the strangeness S = -2 sector of Q/sup 6/, the MIT bag model predicts a dibaryon H with quantum numbers J/sup ..pi../ = 0/sup +/, isospin I = 0, and mass M/sub H/ approx. = 2150 MeV approx. = 2M/sub ..lambda../ -80 MeV. A measurement of the p p total cross section at radical s = 1800 GeV

Description: The {bar p}p differential elastic scattering cross section was measured at {radical}{bar s} = 1800 GeV, using an improved accelerator luminosity determination and CDF small angle data in the range of 0.05 {le} t {le} 0.2(GeV/c){sup 2}. By extrapolating the differential cross sections to t=0 and using the optical theorem we obtain a total cross section of {sigma}{sub tot}({bar p}p) = 72.0 {plus minus} 3.6 mb. This result is preliminary in the sense that we expect to further reduce the systematic… more

Heavy flavor physics at hadron colliders

Description: The search for the top quark has dominated heavy flavor physics at hadron colliders. For Standard model decay of top the present mass limit in m{sub t} > 89 GeV (95% C.L.). Bottom production cross sections are quite large at hadron colliders, thus providing enough statistics for extensive studies. Results on cross sections, B{sup 0} {minus} {bar B}{sup 0} mixing, exclusive channels and rare B decays will be summarized.
