Status of the HEPVis class library

Description: Since 1994 a group of High Energy Physicists and Computer Scientists have been collaborating on HEPVis, a library of 2-D and 3-D shapes for detector visualization and HEP analysis. Based on the Open Inventor (1) toolkit, HEPVis has grown into an international collaboration since its inception in 1994. This paper describes the library, its history, and its future. Images from HEP applications that use the library are also included.

U.S. hydropower resource assessment for Virginia

Description: In June 1989, the US Department of Energy initiated the development of a National Energy Strategy to identify the energy resources available to support the expanding demand for energy in the US. Public hearings conducted as part of the strategy development process indicated that undeveloped hydropower resources were not well defined. As a result, the Department of Energy established an interagency Hydropower Resource Assessment Team to ascertain the undeveloped hydropower potential. In connection with these efforts by the Department of Energy, the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory designed the Hydropower Evaluation Software (HES), which has been used to perform a resource assessment of the undeveloped conventional hydropower potential in over 30 states. This report presents the results of the hydropower resource assessment for the State of Virginia. Undeveloped pumped storage hydropower potential is not included.

HOPSPACK 2.0 user manual.

Description: HOPSPACK (Hybrid Optimization Parallel Search PACKage) solves derivative-free optimization problems using an open source, C++ software framework. The framework enables parallel operation using MPI or multithreading, and allows multiple solvers to run simultaneously and interact to find solution points. HOPSPACK comes with an asynchronous pattern search solver that handles general optimization problems with linear and nonlinear constraints, and continuous and integer-valued variables. This user manual explains how to install and use HOPSPACK to solve problems, and how to create custom solvers within the framework.

Program Transformation in HATS

Description: HATS is a general purpose syntax derivation tree based transformation system in which transformation sequences are described in special purpose language. A powerful feature of this language is that unification is an explicit operation. By making unification explicit, an elegant framework arises in which to express complex application conditions which in turn enables refined control strategies to be realized. This paper gives an overview of HATS, focusing especially on the framework provided by the transformation language and its potential with respect to control and general purpose transformation.

PC-based web authoring: How to learn as little unix as possible while getting on the Web

Description: This document is a general guide for creating Web pages, using commonly available word processing and file transfer applications. It is not a full guide to HTML, nor does it provide an introduction to the many WYSIWYG HTML editors available. The viability of the authoring method it describes will not be affected by changes in the HTML specification or the rapid release-and-obsolescence cycles of commercial WYSIWYG HTML editors. This document provides a gentle introduction to HTML for the beginner, and as the user gains confidence and experience, encourages greater familiarity with HTML through continued exposure to and hands-on usage of HTML code.

Identification of undeveloped hydropower resources in the United States based on environmental, legal, and institutional attributes

Description: The Hydropower Evaluation Software (HES) is used to model the undeveloped hydropower potential in the US. It was developed for the US Department of Energy (DOE) by the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) in response to National Energy Strategy requirements. The HES models the environmental, legal, and institutional attributes present at potential hydropower sites, and calculates a regional or state total of the undeveloped hydropower potential. The site attributes and characteristics can be entered into the menu-driven model on a site-by-site basis, as well as downloaded from existing information sources such as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission`s (FERC) Hydroelectric Power Resources Assessment Inventory and the Department of Interior`s National Rivers Inventory.

Heat Transfer Characteristics of Mark 15 Slugs for Different Bonding Conditions

Description: A numerical heat transfer model based on the HEATING53 conduction code was developed to analyze poor bonding around the endcap of the outer Mark 15 slug. An analytical model could not be developed because of non-uniform heat generation in the core and the arrangement of the various materials in the cylindrical geometry. Results for air gaps are also included; however, they are not considered reasonable poor bond cases because the 300 area inspection tests can detect slugs with air gaps. This reports discusses the test results.

Energetic Particle Effects Can Explain the Low Frequency of Alfvin Modes in the DIII-D Tokamak

Description: During beam injection in the DIII-D tokamak, modes with lower frequencies than expected for toroidicity-induced Alfvin eigenmodes (TAE) are often observed. We present the analysis of one of these ''beta-induced Alfvin eigenmodes'' (BAE) with a high-n stability code HINST that includes the effect of the energetic ions on the mode frequency. It shows that the ''BAE'' could be the theoretically predicted resonant-TAE (RTAE), which is also called an energetic-particle mode (EPM).

Thermal Behavior of Mixtures of Perlite and Phase Change Materials in a Simulated Climate

Description: Carefully controlled and well documented experiments have been done for two candidate configurations to control the heat load on a conditioned space. The 2:1 PCM/perlite mixture and the 6:1 PCM/perlite mixture, both on a weight basis, accomplished thermal control. The 2:1 system seemed to have enough PCM to be effective and involve a much larger fraction of its PCM in diurnal freezing and melting than the 6:1 system. It is a good starting point for engineering design of an optimum thermal control system. The results from the 2:1 system were reproduced with the computer program HEATING to prove that we know the relevant mechanisms and thermophysical properties of the PCM used in the system. Even without a model for the supersaturation and hysteresis that this material exhibited, HEATING reproduced the heat fluxes to the conditioned space in the experiments accurately enough to mirror the good thermal control performance of the system. The modified sensible heat capacity that was used in HEATING is a handy way to account for phase change effects and could be used in a subroutine to compute hourly phase change effects for whole building models like DOE-2. The experiments were done with PCM/perlite mixtures sealed in small methylmethacrylate boxes and covered top and bottom by XPS. The boxes allowed precise placement of the instrumentation used to follow the phase change effects. The XPS gave high R-value per unit thickness. A more practical prototype configuration such as PCM/perlite hermetically sealed in plastic pouches between layers of batts or blown-in insulation should be tested over a larger cross section. A good candidate is the whole attic cavity of the manufactured home test section used in the present work.
