Shallow oil shale resources of the southern Uinta Basin, Utah

Description: The shallow Green River Formation oil shales in the southern part of Utah's Uinta Basin are potentially developable by strip mining or by subsurface techniques which take advantage of limited overburden. The resource of potential shale oil represented by the shallow deposits is evaluated in detail from corehole oil-yield data. Cross-sections are constructed to readily correlatable stratigraphic units selected to represent resources in the shallow shale. To define each unit, the thickness, … more

New Method to Determine the Independent Shear Moduli of Transversely Isotropic Materials

Description: A new and simple method is presented to determine the independent shear moduli of transversely isotropic materials. The method is tested on Green River Formation oil shale, one of such materials. The method is applicable for linear and nonlinear elastic materials. Mathematical formulation, derivation and solution are given, and test apparatus and results are presented. Comparison with other approximate results and acoustical methods are made. Confirmation of the test method with materials havin… more

Reserves in western basins

Description: This project requires generation of producible tight gas sand reserve estimates for three western basins. The requirement is to perform such reserve estimates using industry accepted practices so that results will have high credibility and acceptance by the oil and gas industry. The ultimate goal of the project is to encourage development of the tight gas formation by industry through reduction of the technical and economic risks of locating, drilling and completing commercial gas wells. The th… more

Oil shale oxidation at subretorting temperatures

Description: Green River oil shale was air oxidized at subretorting temperatures. Off gases consisting of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and water were monitored and quantitatively determined. A mathematical model of the oxidation reactions based on a shrinking core model has been developed. This model incorporates the chemical reaction of oxygen and the organic material in the oil shale as well as the diffusivity of the oxygen into the shale particle. Diffusivity appears to be rate limi… more

Reservoir characteristics in Uinta basin gas wells. Final report, September 1, 1978-January 31, 1980

Description: Volumes of 29 lenticular tight gas sandstone reservoirs in the Uinta Basin, Utah have been approximated from long-term pressure buildups on 6 wells. Average reservoir volume was interpreted to be about 240,000 ft/sup 3/ per ft of net pay. Outcrop reservoir geometry studies indicate an average reservoir volume (without any reservoir interconnection assumed) of about 30% less than the average based upon production analysis. Therefore, some reservoir interconnection may exist. Results of this stud… more

Physical and chemical characterization and comparison of solids, liquids, and oils derived from Estonian and Green River formation shales

Description: Although only a single Estonian raw shale sample with an unknown history has been examined, physical and chemical characterization of this material has been accomplished. A comparison with a representative Green River formation raw shale has been made. Some of the findings are: (1) Elemental analysis indicates that the major elements, aluminum, magnesium, and sodium are deficient in Estonian shale compared to the Green River shale. The minor elements, barium and strontium, and the trace element… more

Control strategies for abandoned in situ oil shale retorts

Description: In situ oil shale retorting may result in a number of environmental impacts including degradation of local surface and groundwaters, low resource recovery, and subsidence. The target of present oil shale commercialization activities is the Mahogany zone in Colorado's Piceance Creek Basin. The principal oil shale resource in this area is surrounded by two confined aquifers. During mining and retorting, these aquifers are dewatered. When the site is abandoned, groundwater will reinvade the area a… more
