Chemical composition of atmospheric precipitation in Minnesota and North Dakota. Final report, July 1, 1977-Jun 30, 1980

Description: Precipitation chemistry in central North American appears to e controlled by interaction between soil-derived alkaline dust and gaseous NH/sub 3/ from the cultivated prairie and anthropogenic acid aerosols from the urban-industrial Lower Great Lakes-Ohio Valley region. Analyses of major ions and trace metals in precipitation event and snow core samples along a 600-km transect from the North Dakota prairie to the northeastern Minnesota forest indicate that loadings and concentrations of Ca/sup +… more

Application of wind energy to Great Plains irrigation pumping. Final report

Description: Wind energy systems without energy storage for irrigation in the Great Plains are studied. Major uses of irrigation energy were identified as pumping for surface distribution systems, which could be supplied by variable flow, and pumping for sprinkler systems using constant flow. A computer program was developed to simulate operation of wind-powered irrigation wells. Pumping by wind turbine systems was simulated for 2 variable and 2 constant flow operational modes in which auxiliary motors were… more

Potential impacts of instream flow requirements on coal development in the Northern Great Plains

Description: As coal resources are developed in the Northern Great Plains regions, new reservoirs are being considered to meet expanding water demands. The amount of water available for industrial diversion, however, could be limited by regulations that require minimum flow levels to be maintained downstream of the reservoir sites. Computer simulations of potential reservoirs were used to determine to what extent, if any, instream flow requirements might limit the ability of reservoirs to deliver industrial… more

Regional refining models for alternative fuels using shale and coal synthetic crudes: identification and evaluation of optimized alternative fuels. Annual report, March 20, 1979-March 19, 1980

Description: The initial phase has been completed in the project to evaluate alternative fuels for highway transportation from synthetic crudes. Three refinery models were developed for Rocky Mountain, Mid-Continent and Great Lakes regions to make future product volumes and qualities forecast for 1995. Projected quantities of shale oil and coal oil syncrudes were introduced into the raw materials slate. Product slate was then varied from conventional products to evaluate maximum diesel fuel and broadcut fue… more

Weather pattern climatology of the Great Plains and the related wind regime

Description: The meteorology of the Great Plains can be described as a constant progression of air masses, fronts and cyclonic storm systems. Each of these meteorological conditions can be characterized by identifiable isobaric and related weather parameter patterns. Nine such patterns have been defined to type the weather patterns in the Great Plains. Time series of weather pattern types were produced for 62 stations on the Great Plains. Statistical analyses of these time series produced annual and seasona… more

Cattle Capitalists: The XIT Empire in Texas and Montana

Description: The Texas Constitution of 1876 set aside three million acres of Texas public land in exchange for construction of the monumental red granite Capitol that continues to house Texas state government today. The Capitol project and the land went to an Illinois syndicate led by men influential in business and politics. Austin's statehouse is a recognizable symbol of Texas around the world. So too, the massive Panhandle tract given in exchange -- what became the "fabulous" XIT Ranch -- has come to, fo… more

Pit Silos

Description: "Pit silos are becoming common in many sections of the Great Plains region, especially in the Panhandle of Texas and in similar sections of the United States. The popularity of this type of silo is due chiefly to the remoteness of many farms in these sections from railroad points, which in many cases would make the cost of a masonry silo prohibitive, and to the fact that silos of wood often weaken rapidly under the peculiar climatic conditions prevailing in the Plains region and are destroyed b… more

Shallu, or "Egyptian Wheat": A Late-Maturing Variety of Sorghum

Description: "Many varieties of sorghum have been introduced into the United States in the past 30 or 40 years. Some of these have proved valuable under dry-land conditions in the southern Great Plains.... Shallu is one of the introductions which are not adapted to dry-land conditions. It is a variety that requires a long favorable season to mature.... This bulletin is intended for farmers who are interested in the growing of grain-sorghum crops. It applies to the southern Great Plains under dry-land condit… more
