The AERI/GOES Retrievals Versus Radiosondes for Driving SCMs

Description: Single-Column Models (SCMs) require observations to provide suitable initial and boundary conditions. To meet this need, the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program conducts Intensive Observing Periods (IOPs) to provide 3-hourly radiosondes and other observations. However, such high-frequency sonde launches can be expensive. Therefore, the ARM program can only support a couple IOPs each year with each one lasting 2-4 weeks. In order to reduce the need for high-frequency sonde launches a… more

Improvements in Near-Terminator and Nocturnal Cloud Masks using Satellite Imager Data over the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Sites

Description: Cloud detection using satellite measurements presents a big challenge near the terminator where the visible (VIS; 0.65 {micro}m) channel becomes less reliable and the reflected solar component of the solar infrared 3.9-{micro}m channel reaches very low signal-to-noise ratio levels. As a result, clouds are underestimated near the terminator and at night over land and ocean in previous Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program cloud retrievals using Geostationary Operational Environmental S… more

RAMAN LIDAR PROFILING OF WATER VAPOR AND AEROSOLS OVER THE ARM SGP SITE.

Description: We have developed and implemented automated algorithms to retrieve profiles of water vapor mixing ratio, aerosol backscattering, and aerosol extinction from Southern Great Plains (SGP) Cloud and Radiation Testbed (CART) Raman Lidar data acquired during both daytime and nighttime operations. This Raman lidar system is unique in that it is turnkey, automated system designed for unattended, around-the-clock profiling of water vapor and aerosols (Goldsmith et al., 1998). These Raman lidar profiles … more

Cloud Optical Properties from the Multi-Filter Shadowband Radiometer (MFRSRCLDOD): An ARM Value-Added Product

Description: The Min and Harrison algorithm has been incorporated into an ARM Value-Added Product (VAP) called MFRSR CLDOD. This version of the VAP (1Min) uses the diffuse transmission at 415 nm from the MFRSR. Therefore, the results are only valid for “horizontally homogeneous” stratiform clouds with optical depths larger than approximately 7. The retrieval assumes a single cloud layer consisting solely of liquid water drops. As specified by Min and Harrison (1996), the wavelength at 415 nm was chosen due … more
