Description: To facilitate disposal of transuranic (TRU) waste, Los Alamos National Laboratory designed and constructed the Size Reduction Facility (SRF) during the period 1977 to 1981. This report summarizes the engineering development, installation, and early test operations of the SRF. The facility incorporates a large stainless steel enclosure fitted with remote handling and cutting equipment to obtain an estimated 4:1 volume reduction of gloveboxes and other bulky metallic wastes.

Shielded cells transfer automation

Description: Nuclear waste from shielded cells is removed, packaged, and transferred manually in many nuclear facilities. Radiation exposure is absorbed by operators during these operations and limited only through procedural controls. Considerations in the behavior of aerosols in gloveboxes. I. Models. [Pu aerosols]

Description: Increasing requirements for minimizing aerosol release from gloveboxes and minimizing personnel irradiation in the processing and recycling of reactor grade plutonium necessitate a knowledge of the behavior of aerosols in such enclosures. This paper presents the results of a literature survey concerning aerosols in gloveboxes. The results of some theoretical plutonium aerosol models in simulating glovebox conditions are reported.

Portable gamma-ray holdup and attributes measurements of high- and variable-burnup plutonium

Description: High burnup-plutonium holdup has been assayed quantitatively by low resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. The assay was calibrated with four plutonium standards representing a range of fuel burnup and {sup 241}Am content. Calibration of moisture monitors

Description: A method for calibrating an aluminum oxide hygrometer against an optical chilled mirror dew-point hygrometer has been established. A theoretical cross-point line of dew points from both hygrometers and a maximum moisture content of 10 ppM/sub v/ are used to define an area for calibrating the sensor probes of the aluminum oxide hygrometer.
