Temperature-gradient and heat-flow data, Panther Canyon, Nevada

Description: A series of six shallow temperature-gradient holes were drilled for Sunoco Energy Development Company in Panther Canyon, Pershing County, Nevada during the period March 24 through June 15, 1981. A proposed intermediate-depth gradient hole was spud but abandoned after encountering unresolvable drilling problems. The locations of these holes are shown on figure 1. This report summarizes the results of the Panther Canyon project.

Italian Experience and Problems in Deep Geothermal Drilling

Description: Geothermal exploration at depth is being conducted in the Larderello area of Italy, in order to ascertain whether it is possible to extract geothermal fluids from the layers which underlie the reservoir now being exploited. The main operating problems are caused by the high thermality and the chemical corrosiveness of the fluids encountered; and by the practical problems involved in drilling without circulation to the surface in mainly hard but anhomogeneous fractured formations. The technology employed for deep geothermal well drilling plays an important role in this research. In deep geothermal well drilling it is essential that the equipment and the materials employed are suitable for use in areas which are characterized by high thermality and chemical corrosiveness. The results of the experiences gained in Italy concerning the materials and tools employed in deep geothermal exploration are presented. The various problems involved are described in detail and particular mention is made of drift control, fishing operations, cementation of the deep casing, control of the circulation fluid, and choice of the tubular materials.

Geothermal Well Completions in Cerro Prieto

Description: Geothermal well completion criteria have evolved from 1964 to this date. The evolution started with the common techniques used in oil-well completion and gradually changed to accommodate the parameters directly related to the mineralogic characteristics of the geothermal fluids. While acceptable completions can now be achieved, research techniques and data collection should be improved to optimize the procedures.

Investigation and evaluation of geopressured-geothermal wells

Description: This group of wells-of-opportunity (WOO) consists of six candidates; one in Texas and five in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. Of the latter, two of three candidates in Twp 15S, Rge 5W are considered to be mutually exclusive in that each exhibits good potential for testing geopressured-geothermal aquifers which are indicated to be of sufficient volume for purposes of a 30-day test. A final selection of one location may be made from these three wells, assuming all pass screening criteria, based on estimated cost of the test and the negotiation of a satisfactory agreement with the owners of the surface and/or the minerals.

Investigation and Evaluation of Geopressured-Geothermal Wells; Detailed Reentry Prognosis for Geopressure-Geothermal Testing of Dr. M.O. Miller No. 1 Well

Description: This Gruy Federal Type I-A prospect was drilled as the Union Oil Company of California, Dr. M.O. Miller No. 1 and is located in Section 34, T15S, R5W, Cameron Parish, Louisiana. The land belongs to the heirs of Dr. Miller and is unleased. The well site is approximately 350 feet southwest of the northwest corner of Section 34 and approximately 4,000 feet south-southeast of Prospect L-3, Buttes Gas and Oil Co. et al., Gladys McCall No. 1. The former well site is accessible by approximately 2.8 miles of canal levee on which a board road would have to be constructed. In addition, there are two wooden bridges in fair condition to be crossed which will require minor repairs. The well was drilled to a total depth of 18,158 feet and plugged and abandoned as a dry hole mid 1965.

San Emidio Desert Prospect, Washoe and Pershing Counties, Nevada, for Chevron Oil Co., Wells Se-A and SE-B, Temperature depth data, 19 wells

Description: During 1977 Chevron Resources conducted numerous temperature hole programs in the San Emidio Desert Prospect, Nevada. These programs were projected to evaluate recently acquired Fee Land and acreage which could be included in a unit package. The 1977 temperature holes (Map 1) were drilled to a maximum depth of 500 feet with a minimum of 100 feet. Maximum temperature encountered in these holes was 232 F with an average gradient of {approx} 9 F/100 feet (300-400 feet) and {approx} 11 F/100 feet (100-200 feet). In addition, shot holes drilled during the seismic program had temperature pipe installed and were also logged. Table 1 reflects data pertinent to the temperature holes drilled in 1977; in addition, complete temperature gradient plots (Appendix A) and lithology descriptions (Appendix B) are included in this report. Water samples from two temperature holes were collected early in the 1977 program and analyzed by Skyline Laboratories (Appendix C). The results of the estimated base temperature calculations are given.

Summary of results from a thermal gradient survey of the San Emidio wells Washoe County, Nevada, for Chevron Oil Co., Wells SE-A and SE-B, Project No. 76.112

Description: This summary describes the results obtained from a temperature gradient survey of the San Emidio wells drilled in Washoe County, Nevada. The temperature gradient survey was performed during the month of July, 1976, by Geonomics, Inc., for the Chevron Oil Company. The approximate location of the survey is shown in Figure 1. A total of two holes were drilled with locations plotted on Figure 2.

Injectivity Testing for Vapour Dominated Feed Zones

Description: Wells with vapor dominated feed zones yield abnormal pressure data. This is caused by the condensation of vapor during water injection. A revised injectivity test procedure currently applied by PNOC at the Leyte Geothermal Power Project has improved the injectivity test results.

Interpretation of geology, geophysics and hydrochemistry for selection of geothermal drilling sites, Canon de San Diego Grant, Sandoval county, New Mexico

Description: This project began in mid-1977 as an evaluation of the geology and hydrogeology of the Canon de San Diego Grant for Sunoco Energy Development Co. (Sunedco) and evolved late in 1977, at Sunedco's direction, into a more comprehensive study of geophysical, geologic and hydrogeochemical data. This has been used to select sites for the possible drilling of deep geothermal wells.
