Geochemical and Geomechanical Effects on Wellbore Cement Fractures: Data Information for Wellbore Reduced Order Model

Description: The primary objective of the National Risk Assessment Partnership (NRAP) program is to develop a defensible, generalized, and science-based methodology and platform for quantifying risk profiles at CO2 injection and storage sites. The methodology must incorporate and define the scientific basis for assessing residual risks associated with long-term stewardship and help guide site operational decision-making and risk management. Development of an integrated and risk-based protocol will help minimize uncertainty in the predicted long-term behavior of the CO2 storage site and thereby increase confidence in storage integrity. The risk profile concept has proven useful in conveying the qualitative evolution of risks for CO2 injection and storage site. However, qualitative risk profiles are not sufficient for specifying long-term liability for CO2 storage sites. Because there has been no science-based defensible and robust methodology developed for quantification of risk profiles for CO2 injection and storage, NRAP has been focused on developing a science-based methodology for quantifying risk profiles for various risk proxies.

Hydrology of the Wibaux-Beach Lignite Deposit Area, Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota

Description: From objectives and scope: This study was undertaken in response to U.S. Bureau of Land Management concerns for the water resources of the Wibaux-Beach area in the event of lignite mining. The objectives of the study were to: (1) Define the stratigraphic sequence within a few hundred feet above and below the minable lignite; (2) define the premining hydrologic and geochemical regime of the Wibaux-Beach deposit area; and (3) describe some of the hydrologic implications of the strip-mining process. A fourth objective, the establishment of historical data base with which to access any modifications to the system attributable to future mining, was accomplished as a byproduct of the other three.

Plan of Study for the Regional Aquifer Systems Analysis of the Upper Colorado River Basin in Colorado, Utah, Wyomingm and Arizona

Description: Abstract: Water shortages are expected in the Upper Colorado River Basin because of increasing water demands for various uses. Ground-water supplies can help to reduce water shortages but ground-water reservoirs have not been studied in detail. The regional aquifer systems analysis of the Upper Colorado River Basin is a study of the major ground-water resources of the region. Aquifers occur in the sedimentary rock sequences in basins and uplifted regions, in volcanic-rock regions, and in stream-valley alluvium. The project work will include collection and compilation of existing geologic, geophysical, hydrologic, and geochemical data. These data will be used to assess the hydrologic characteristics of the aquifer systems and to estimate the hydrologic effects of discharge from, or recharge to, selected aquifers.

Mesa 1° x 2° NTMS Area, Arizona: Data Report (Abbreviated)

Description: From abstract: This abbreviated data report presents results of ground water and stream/surface sediment reconnaissance in the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) Mesa 1 x 2 quadrangle. Surface sediment samples were collected at 713 sites, at a target sampling density of one site per 13 square kilometers (five square miles). Ground water samples were collected at 365 sites. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) results are given for uranium and 16 other elements in sediments, and for uranium and 9 other elements in ground water. Mass spectrometry results are given for helium in ground water. Field measurements and observations are reported for each site. Analytical data and field measurements are presented in tables and maps.

Uranium Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance of the Moab NTMS Quadrangle, Utah/Colorado, Including Concentrations of Forty-Three Additional Elements

Description: Partial abstract: "During the summers of 1976, 1977, and 1978, 442 water and 1755 sediment samples were collected from 1801 locations within the 19 400 km2 area of the Moab quadrangle, Utah and Colorado, by private contractors for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. Water samples were collected from streams, springs, and wells; wet and dry sediment samples were collected both from stream channels and from springs. Each water sample was analyzed for 13 elements, including uranium, and each sediment sample was analyzed for 43 elements, including uranium, thorium, and vanadium. All field and analytical data are listed in the appendixes of this report" (p. 1).
