Hot helium flow test facility summary report

Description: This report summarizes the results of a study conducted to assess the feasibility and cost of modifying an existing circulator test facility (CTF) at General Atomic Company (GA). The CTF originally was built to test the Delmarva Power and Light Co. steam-driven circulator. This circulator, as modified, could provide a source of hot, pressurized helium for high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) and gas-cooled fast breeder reactor (GCFR) component testing. To achieve this purpose, a high-temp… more

Study of particle rebound characteristics and material erosion at high temperature

Description: In this research an investigation was conducted to study the ash particle rebound characteristics and the associated erosion behavior of alloys and coatings which are widely used in gas and steam turbines. A three-component LDV system was used to measure the restitution parameters of 15 micron mean diameter coal ash particles impacting superalloys and coating at different angles. The presented results show the variation of the particle restitution ratios with the impingement angle for the coate… more

Alternative energy sources for non-highway transportation: executive summary

Description: A planning study was made for DOE on alternate fuels for non-highway transportation (aircraft, rail, marine, and pipeline). The study provides DOE with a recommendation of what alternate fuels may be of interest to non-highway transportation users from now through 2025 and recommends R and D needed to allow non-petroleum derived fuels to be used in non-highway transportation. In the near term (present-1985), there is unlikely to be any major change in the fuels used in any of the four modes of … more

Condensation processes in coal combustion products. Progress report, July 1, 1979-June 30, 1980

Description: Slag vaporization is a serious problem in high-temperature coal combustion and gasification processes. Cooling of process gas streams causes the slag vapors to condense, but they do not necessarily do so at equilibrium. Predicting the compositions and properties of the condensing species requires modeling the nucleation processes occurring in these systems. This is a report on our progress toward modeling this nucleation process and toward implementing the model with a computer code suitable fo… more
