Fast Critical Assembly Safeguards: NDA Methods for Highly Enriched Uranium. Summary Report, October 1978 - September 1979, Volume 3

Description: Nondestructive assay (NDA) methods, principally passive gamma measurements and active neutron interrogation, have been studied for their safeguards effectiveness and programmatic impact as tools for making inventories of highly enriched uranium fast critical assembly fuel plates. It was concluded that no NDA method is the sole answer to the safeguards problem, that each of those emphasized here has its place in an integrated safeguards system, and that each has minimum facility impact.

Plutonium Calorimetry and SNM Holdup Measurements, Progress Report: March 1976-August 1976

Description: The calorimetric instrumentation developed at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) for making nondestructive measurements of the plutonium content of fuel rods is discussed. Measurements with these instruments are relatively fast (i.e., 15 to 20 minutes) when compared to the several hours usually required with more conventional calorimeters and for this reason are called ''fast-response.'' Most of the discussion concerns the One-Meter and the Four-Meter Fuel-Rod Calorimeters and the Analytical Sma… more

Approximations of Gamma Cross Sections for Fast Nuclear Reactors

Description: The report shows a method to approximate a P₁ scattering solution for the flux in a fast reactor, using an isotropic, but not a diagonal-transport-approximation scattering matrix. Presented are flux errors relative to a P₁ solution for different levels of transport approximation in an EBR-II type of core surrounded by a stainless steel reflector. Problems associated with the use of the method are also presented.

Autoradiographic Technique for Rapid Inventory of Plutonium-Containing Fast Critical Assembly Fuel

Description: A nondestructive autoradiographic technique is described which can provide a verification of the piece count and the plutonium content of plutonium-containing fuel elements. This technique uses the spontaneously emitted gamma rays from plutonium to form images of fuel elements on photographic film. Autoradiography has the advantage of providing an inventory verification without the opening of containers or the handling of fuel elements. Missing fuel elements, substitution of nonradioactive mate… more

Influence of Gamma Irradiation on RG 8/U Cable

Description: Abstract: "Static measurements have been made of the currents produced by Co-60 gamma irradiation of solid dielectric RG 8/U cable. Sensitivity curves are presented as a function of the magnitude and polarity of the collection voltage to 90 volts. It is shown that the current is due to a polarity- and voltage-sensitive ionization component and to a polarity- and voltage-insensitive component attributed to the Compton process. The total cable sensitivity at -90 volts, with saturation not achieve… more

Gamma Radiography of Refractory-Lined Vessels and Components

Description: Materials used in coal-conversion systems are exposed to high pressure, high temperature, corrosive and erosive gases, and liquids containing particulate matter. These severe environments necessitate an assessment of the integrity of components to prevent premature failures. Gamma radiography was evaluated as a viable technique for testing such components in the laboratory or after operation in situ. Penetrameters (image-quality indicators) were developed for refractory-lined vessels and transf… more
