Description: Maywood Chemical Works (MCW) of Maywood, New Jersey, generated process wastes and residues associated with the production and refining of thorium and thorium compounds from monazite ores from 1916 to 1956. MCW supplied rare earth metals and thorium compounds to the Atomic Energy Commission and various other government agencies from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s. Area residents used the sandlike waste from this thorium extracting process mixed with tea and cocoa leaves as mulch in their yards.… more

Computer program SCAP-BR for gamma-ray streaming through multi-legged ducts

Description: A computer program, SCAP-BR, has been developed at Burns and Roe for the gamma-ray streaming analysis through multi-legged ducts. SCAP-BR is a modified version of the single scattering code, SCAP, incorporating capabilities of handling multiple scattering and volumetric source geometries. Exact calculations of nuclear-recoil energies from prompt gamma decays resulting from neutron capture

Description: The results of an accurate determination of the recoil spectrum from (n, ..gamma..) reactions in molybdenum are presented. The recoil spectrum has been calculated from nuclear level structure data and measured branching ratios. Angular correlations between successive gammas have been accounted for using the standard theoretical techniques of Racah algebra and the density matrix formalism.

Material Considerations in the Design of a Bulk Shield for the Fusion Engineering Device

Description: The FED bulk shield provides protection from high-energy neutrons and gamma rays and removes nuclear heat generated. Bulk shield optimization calculations were conducted using the Los Alamos ONEDANT discrete ordinates and the General Atomic PATH point kernel codes. Six candidate steel alloys were considered.

Preliminary measurements of gamma ray effects on characteristics of broad-band GaAs field-effect transistor preamplifiers

Description: The effect of gamma radiation on electrical characteristics of cryogenically cooled broad-band low-noise microwave preamplifiers has been preliminarily evaluated. The change in the gain and noise figure of a 1-2 GHz preamplifier using GaAs microwave transistors was determined at gamma doses between 10/sup 5/ rad to 5 /times/ 10/sup 8/ rad. Analysis of a neutron scattering and gamma-ray production integral and experiment on silicon dioxide for neutron energies from 1 to 15 MeV

Description: Monte Carlo calculations were made to analyze the results of an integral experiment with a sample of SiO/sub 2/ to determine the adequacy of ENDF/B-IV neutron scattering and gamma-ray production cross-section data for silicon and oxygen. Population and decay of high-spin states in /sup 157-161/Yb: evolution of nuclear shapes as a function spin and neutron number

Description: The population and decay of the entry states in /sup 157-161/Yb and /sup 155-158/Er from the reactions of 136- and 149-MeV /sup 20/Ne with /sup 144/Nd and /sup 146/Nd have been investigated with the Spin Spectrometer gated with a Ge detector.
