Heavy recycle solvent studies in two-stage coal liquefaction. Final technical report, September 1, 1982-December 30, 1983

Description: The objective of this program has been to study the chemistry of the components with high boiling points in a direct coal liquefaction recycle solvent and to identify those components which lead to higher overall yields and improved product stability in the initial coal dissolution step of direct coal liquefaction processes. The major conclusions are: -454 C recycle solvent is primarily aromatic hydrocarbons (73%) and contains almost no asphaltenes; +454 C recycle solvent is primarily asphalten… more

Control of catalytic hydrotreating selectivity with ammonia. [Hydrodeoxygenation]

Description: The hydrogenation of naphthalene in the presence of 0, 24, or 48 kPa of ammonia derived from propyl amine was studied during the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of dibenzofuran (DBF). A new sample of sulfided NiMo/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} catalyst at 360{degrees}C, 6.9 MPa total H{sub 2} pressure in a vapor phase tubular reactor was used. As a base-line the HDO of DBF was also studied in the absence of both naphthalene and ammonia. Ammonia inhibited both the HDO of dibenzofuran and the hydrogenation of napht… more

Catalyst dispersion and activity under conditions of temperature- staged liquefaction

Description: The general objectives of this research are (1) to investigate the use of highly dispersed catalysts for the pretreatment of coal by mild hydrogenation, (2) to identify the active forms of the catalysts under reaction conditions and (3) to clarify the mechanisms of catalysis. The ultimate objective is to ascertain if mild catalytic hydrogenation resulting in very limited or no coal solubilization is an advantageous pretreatment for the transformation of coal into transportable fuels. The experi… more

Transition metal activation and functionalization of carbon-hydrogen bonds

Description: We are investigating the fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic factors that influence carbon-hydrogen bond activation at homogeneous transition metal centers and the conversion of hydrocarbons into functionalized products of potential use to the chemical industry. Advances have been made in both understanding the interactions of hydrocarbons with metals and in the functionalization of hydrocarbons. We have found that RhCl(PR{sub 3}){sub 2}(CNR) complexes can catalyze the insertion of isonitrile… more

Simple home-made sensors for potentiometric titrations. [Nitroform CH(NO/sub 2/)/sub 3/]

Description: A sensor for potentiometric titrations was prepared by coating a spectroscopic graphite rod with a solution of poly(vinyl chloride) and dioctyphthalate in tetrahydrofuran. The reference electrode was an Ag/AgCl single-junction electrode. The sensor was used in precipitation, acid-base, compleximetric, and redox titrations. Preparation of the coated-graphite sensor is simple and rapid. Moreover, it is quite inexpensive. A limitation is its applicability in aqueous media only, because organic sol… more

Sonic and resistivity measurements on Berea sandstone containing tetrahydrofuran hydrates: a possible analogue to natural-gas-hydrate deposits. [Tetrahydrofuran hydrates]

Description: Deposits of natural gas hydrates exist in arctic sedimentary basins and in marine sediments on continental slopes and rises. However, the physical properties of such sediments are largely unknown. In this paper, we report laboratory sonic and resistivity measurements on Berea sandstone cores saturated with a stoichiometric mixture of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water. We used THF as the guest species rather than methane or propane gas because THF can be mixed with water to form a solution contain… more

Synthesis and chemistry of yttrium and lanthanide metal complexes

Description: The objective of this research project is to determine the special features of complexes of yttrium and the lanthanide metals which will allow the design and synthesis of materials with unique chemical, physical, and catalytic properties. Past studies of yttrium and lanthanide metal alkyl and hydride complexes stabilized by cyclopentadienyl co-ligands have shown that a substantial, often singular, organometallic chemistry is available via these metals. More extensive utilization of the chemical… more

Sediment sampling of proposed dredge sites in the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers

Description: The purpose of the study was to measure the concentration of dioxins in sediment proposed to be dredged from the Lower Granite Reservoir near Lewiston, Idaho, and compare it to concentrations found at the reference sites. The area to be dredged is immediately adjacent to and downstream from an effluent discharge pipe belonging to the Potlatch Corporation's pulp mill. Control of catalytic hydrotreating selectivity with ammonia. [Hydrodeoxygenation]

Description: The focus of our attention has now shifted to the effect of ammonia on hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of selected model compounds. Scouting studies with 2-phenylphenol (OPP), phenyl ether (PE), 3-ethylphenol (MEP) and dibenzofuran (DBF) indicated some inhibition of hydrogenation activity but with OPP, PE and MEP several products were formed that were not completely identified and kinetic analysis would be difficult. We therefore focused on DBF, with which we have had some experience, and we carried o… more
