Hanford Atomic Products Operation Five-Year Program

Description: The General Electric Company has prepared in past years numerous documents for the Atomic Energy Commission outlining in some detail its current and proposed programs at Hanford. Last year, at the request of the commission, program types of information were consolidated into one document, the HAPO Five Year Program. That document was well received and useful to an extent that the General Electric Company was requested by the Commission to prepare another covering the fiscal years 1959 through 1… more

Recycle of 231 Building supernates to 224 T Building: Relationship to ``T`` and ``S`` Plant

Description: An examination of the process scheme for handling present and future 231 Building supernatant solutions is necessary to forecast the effects of placing one of the processing facilities (224B) in a standby status and to ascertain if rescheduling of any of the supernatant solutions to 202S will be necessary. The examination indicates the 231 Building process supernates and cell cleanouts together with the 221, 224T Buildings acid washes and the 234-5 Building returns can be processed through the … more

Debye-Waller factors of the light actinide metals

Description: Time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction was used to determine the Debve-Waller factors of light actinide metals. The Debye-Waller factor is a measure of the mean-square atomic displacement that arises from the thermal motion ofthe atoms in any solid. Its temperature dependence determines a Debye-Waller temperature, {Theta}{sub DW}, that is characteristic of the elastic properties of the solid. The data are obtained by Rietveld analysis of neutron diffraction powder patterns obtained at severa… more

Essential material flow sheet of precipitation separations process

Description: This report describes the direct essential material requirements for processing a standard run through the precipitation separations process in effect on August 1, 1954. Flow sheet conditions are based on a starting maximum batch size of 300 grams of product at a uranium irradiation level of 215 MWD/ton. The essential material requirements are those used to process with 2.5 grams of Bismuth per liter in Extraction, First Decontamination Cycle volumes at 56% of the September 1, 1946 standard, an… more

Standby status report Hot Semiworks facility

Description: This report is written to provide information concerning the status of the Hot Semiworks facility as it is placed in stand-by on July 1, 1957. The plant was constructed in 1951 and early 1952. It vas operated on Redox type investigations until the last of 1953. The plant was then converted to the Purex flowsheet under Project CA 513 D. Operations on the Purex type investigations were started in early 1955 and continued until early in 1956. At that time a maintenance program for plant improvemen… more

Structure and phase transformations in uranium metal

Description: In common with other elemental actinides, metallic uranium exists in several allotropic forms, differing from one another by complex but subtle atomic rearrangements. This article reviews progress in understanding the successive phase transformations from the perspective of soft-mode instabilities.
