AFBC - operation of small scale demonstration for greenhouse heating

Description: A 2.2 million Btu/hr unit prototype AFBC system was installed in 1995 at Cedar Lane Farms, a commercial nursery in Ohio. The AFBC is in operation and is heating hot water for greenhouse temperature control. A team consisting of the Energy and Environmental Research Corporation, the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center of Ohio State University and the Will-Burt Company developed this technology with funding support from the Ohio Coal Development Office and the U.S. Department of Ene… more

Pressure fluctuations as a diagnostic tool for fluidized beds. Technical progress report, October 1, 1996--December 31, 1996

Description: The viability of matching hydrodynamic conditions in a hot bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) combustor and a cold BFB model are being evaluated. Similitude parameters are being matched in a 20.32 cm diameter BFB combustor and a 5.08 cm diameter cold BFB. In addition, tests are planned to investigate the effect loaded solids above the L-valve have on the flow rate.

The Scale-Up of Large Pressurized Fluidized Beds for Advanced Coal-fired Power Processes

Description: More refinement was added to the five sample ports that were installed along the cold model riser. Each sample port is now equipped with an electrically actuated X ball-valve that can be operated from a switch in the main control panel area. These actuated ball valves control the on/off position of the sample port. They are switched on for a desired period of time for sample collection during a test run. They are particularly useful for the hard-to-reach sampling locations near the top of the r… more

Analysis/Control of in-Bed Tube Erosion Phenomena in the Fluidized Bed Combustion (FBC) System. Technical Progress Report, January 1, 1994--March 31, 1994

Description: This technical report summarizes the research work performed and progress achieved during the period of January 1, 1994 to March 31, 1994. The metal wastage mechanisms and rate that occur in 1018 carbon steel used in in-bed tube of the bubbling fluidized bed combustor (BFBC) are discussed with particle-surface collision frequency around tube. The distribution of particle-surface collision frequency around tube was affected by the location of tube and bed height. A series of material wastage tes… more

DEVELOPMENT OF THE INSTRUMENTATION AND MODELING FOR HEAT TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS IN CFBC

Description: This technical report summarizes the research conducted and progress achieved during the period from April 1 1998 to September 30, 1998. The numerical simulation was continued to predict the flow patterns, velocity and pressure without the heat transfer effect in the CFB cold flow model. The air injection side at lower level k=6 showed high pressure profiles as compared with the opposite side of the air injection. Some wakes at upper level k=52 are formed at the top area of the probe. The veloc… more

Development of the Instrumentation and Modeling for Heat Transfer Characteristics in CFBC

Description: This technical report summarizes the research conducted and results obtained during the period beginning October 1, 1999 to March 31, 2000. Heat transfer characteristics study and experimental work were continued using the bench-scale CFB system with the heat transfer probe. A copper tube with thermocouples was used as the heat transfer probe which was convenient to measure the temperature changes at different locations of the bed. The heat transfer coefficient at different locations of the hea… more

Investigation of Heat Transfer and Combustion in the Advanced Fluidized Bed Combustor (FBC)

Description: This technical report summarizes the research work performed and progress achieved during the period of October 1, 1994 to December 31, 1994. The measurement of gas flow continued with the assumption of axisymmetric flow in the laboratory-scale FBC. The gas axial velocity distributions at two cross-section in the test chamber were presented. The circulating flow is relatively strong (swirl number of 3.0) near the freeboard wall for the two cross-sections because the flow has high reversal air v… more

PRD-66 Gas Filter Development

Description: The PRD-66 manufacturing process offers a unique approach to the production of hot gas candle filters for application in Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combustors (PFBC) and Integrated Gas Combined Cycle (IGCC) power systems. Fabricated from readily available and inexpensive raw materials, the PRD-66 process uses an admixture of textile and ceramic concepts to produce an all-oxide filter element containing no refractor ceramic fiber (RCF) residues in the finished products. The use demonstration of t… more

PROOF OF PRINCIPAL TEST TO FEED AND METER GRANULAR COAL INTO 450 PSIG GAS PRESSURE

Description: The objective of this project is to demonstrate proof of principal to feed and meter granular coal into 450 psig gas pressure for use with pressurized fluidized bed combustors. This report summarizes work undertaken in the second quarter of 1999 in support of that objective. Testing has been carried out on a small scale pump, but provided inconsistent data for correlation with performance predictions based on material properties. The problems were due to the inability of the test rig to maintai… more

The systematic tests were conducted to investigate the thermal performance and heat transfer effect on the exploratory hot model. Test results were analyzed to understand thermal performance, heat balance, and heat transfer effect on exploratory hot model. Temperature was measured at different locations of the combustor chamber. The temperature was decreased al… more

Pressure Fluctuations as a Disgnostic Tool for Fluidized Beds.

Description: The validity of using bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) similitude parameters to match a hot BFB to a cold BFB is being studied. Sand in a BFB combustor and copper powder in cold BFB model have been analyzed and found to be out of similitude. In the analysis process, it was determined that the condition of the screen covering the pressure tap affects the quality of pressure data recorded. In addition, distributor plate design and condition will affect the hydrodynamics of the bed. Additional tests a… more

Metal filter materials in combustion environments

Description: Hot gas filtration in pressurized fluidized bed combustion (PFBC) systems has been proven below 750 C (1400 F). Advanced PFBC designs, focused on operational and efficiency improvements, will require filtration at higher temperatures. E.g., in first-generation advanced PFBCs, the filters will have to perform at 870 C (1600 F), while second-generation units, with both carbonizers for fuel-gas production and fluidized-bed combustors, will eventually require filters to operate up to 930 and 870 C … more

Kinetics and Mechanisms of NO(x) - Char Reduction

Description: The emission of nitrogen oxides from combustion of coal remains a problem of considerable interest, whether the concern is with acid rain, stratospheric ozone chemistry, or greenhouse gases. Whereas earlier the concern was focused mainly on NO (as a primary combustion product) and to a lesser extent N0{sub 2} (since it is mainly a secondary product of combustion, e.g. see ref. 1), in recent years the emissions of N{sub 2}0 have also captured considerable attention, particularly in the context o… more

Analysis/Control of in-Bed Tube Erosion Phenomena in the Fluidized Bed Combustion (FBC) System. Technical Progress Report Number 10

Description: Using the basic principle of flow disruption as a method of preventing erosion, different types of anti-erosion tubes were designed and tested. The main function of these protective devices was to decrease the bubble momentum and form a stagnant layer of bed material on the tube surface by changing the local flow pattern. The ball-studded tube with the in-line pattern was less effective in reducing weight loss than the ball-studded tube with the staggered pattern. The staggered, ball-studded tu… more

Interpretation of pilot-scale, fluidized bed behavior using chaotic time series analysis

Description: In this paper, we apply conventional and chaotic time series analyses to the interpretation of pressure-drop measurements from a 250 kW, pilot-scale, bubbling fluidized bed combustor. Our results demonstrate that such analyses can be useful for discriminating different types of fluidization in a practical combustor and offer a basis for improving fluidized bed monitoring and control. A new comparative index that reflects the multivariate structure in pressure-drop measurements is proposed for d… more
