Modeling studies on the precipitation of Kr after implantation into metals

Description: A rate-theory approach is applied to interpreting observations on the precipitation of Kr injected into Ni at temperatures between 25 and 560/degree/C. At temperatures of 400/degree/C or higher, the implanted Kr precipitates evolve into a bi-modal size distribution containing small solid precipitates and an additional population of larger, faceted bubbles. The calculations explore the dependence of the observed bi-modal distribution on the maximum size of the solid Kr precipitates and the effec… more

Indium phosphide/cadmium sulfide thin-film solar cells. Quarterly technical progress report No. 3, December 1979-April 1980

Description: Thin films (approx. 1 ..mu..m thick) and large grains (approx. 40 x 40 ..mu..m) of InP were epitaxially deposited on low-cost recrystallized CdS (RXCdS) substrates at 280/sup 0/C by planar reactive deposition. At 380/sup 0/C, a 0.4- to 1.0-..mu..m-thick In-Cd-S transition layer between the InP and the RXCdS degrades the quality of the InP epitaxy. However, p-type InP films were prepared at this temperature by Be-doping and capping the entire RXCdS substrate with InP. Large grains of CdTe (appro… more

Development of passive electronic components for instrumentation of improved geothermal logging tools and components. Annual progress report

Description: Short term objectives for well-logging instrumentation are circuits which can operate at temperatures in the range 275/sup 0/C to 350/sup 0/C; the medium term goal is operation up to 500/sup 0/C, and the long term goal is to achieve operation at 1000/sup 0/C. It is apparent that useful electronic circuits will require the combination of both passive components and active devices. In order to meet the compatibility requirements, the basic technology which has been selected in this project is the… more

Investigations of CuInSe sub 2 Thin Films and Contacts

Description: This report describes research into electrical contacts for copper indium diselenide (CuInSe{sub 2}) polycrystalline thin films used for solar cell applications. Molybdenum contacts have historically been the most promising for heterojunction solar cells. This program studied contact stability by investigating thermally induced bilayer reactions between molybdenum and copper, indium, and selenium. Because selenization is widely used to fabricate CuInSe{sub 2} thin films for photovoltaic cells, … more

Surfaces and Thin Films Studied by Picosecond Ultrasonics

Description: This research is the study of thin films and interfaces via the use of the picosecond ultrasonic technique. In these experiments ultrasonic waves are excited in a structure by means of a picosecond light pulse ( pump pulse''). The propagation of these waves is detected through the use of a probe light pulse that is time-delayed relative to the pump. This probe pulse measures the change {Delta}R(t) in the optical reflectivity of the structure that occurs because the ultrasonic wave changes the o… more

A replaceable reflective film for solar concentrators

Description: The 3M Company manufactures a silvered acrylic film called ECP-305 that is regarded as the preferred reflective film for use on stretched-membrane heliostats. However, ECP-305 will degrade in time, due to both corrosion of the silver layer and delamination at the film's silver-to-acrylic interface, and will eventually need to be replaced. 3M uses a very aggressive adhesive on this film, and once it is laminated, replacement is very difficult. The purpose of this investigation was the developmen… more

The use of BaF sub 2 buffer layers for the sputter-deposition of TlCaBaCuO thin-film superconductors

Description: Thin films of the Tl-based superconductors often have relatively poor properties because of film/substrate interdiffusion which occurs during the anneal. We have therefore investigated the use of BaF{sub 2} as a diffusion barrier. TlCaBaCuO thin films were deposited by dc magnetron sputtering onto MgO <100> substrates, both with and without an evaporation-deposited BaF{sub 2} buffer layer, and post-annealed in a Tl over-pressure. Electrical properties of the films were determined by four-point … more

Laser deposition and laser modification of high-temperature superconducting thin films

Description: Applications of high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) may require epitaxial films with {Tc}{ge}77 K, and J{sub c}{ge}10{sup 6} A/cm{sup 2}. In situ pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is suitable for fabrication of such films. We report parametric studies on the effect of laser and processing parameters on the crystallinity, epitaxy and electrical properties of laser-deposited HTSC thin films. In addition, several laser-based processes were used to modify the electrical properties ({Tc} and J{sub c… more

Synchrotron x-ray study of physisorbed films of mixtures of Ar and Xe on graphite

Description: Mixtures of Ar and Xe have been studied in most of the submonolayer region of the phase diagram (T,chi, rho), T = temperature, chi = chemical composition, rho = fraction of a monolayer. The basic feature is a large tendency to form ..sqrt.. 3 x ..sqrt.. 3 commensurate alloys (Kr-like structures), but none of the commensurate nor of the incommensurate structures form a chemically ordered alloy at 11 K. Thus the 2D solid can be thought of as a solid consisting of particles of an average size. This… more

Pulsed CO sub 2 laser processing of thin ion-implanted silicon layers

Description: We show that extremely shallow ({approx lt} 800 {Angstrom}) melt depths can be easily obtained by irradiating a thin heavily doped silicon layer with a CO{sub 2} laser pulse. Since the absorption of the CO{sub 2} laser pulse is dominated by free-carrier transitions, the beam heating occurs primarily in the thin degenerately doped film. For CO{sub 2} pulse-energy densities exceeding a threshold value, surface melting occurs and the reflectivity of the incident laser pulse increases abruptly to a… more

Chemical Vapor Deposition of Refractory Metal Reflectors for Spectrally Selective Solar Absorbers. Annual Report, May 1, 1978-April 30, 1979

Description: Three methods are described to fabricate by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) molybdenum films which rival conventional mirror materials in their infrared reflectance. With an absolute reflectance of 97.4% at 10 ..mu..m, these Super Molybdenum films reflect better than any other molybdenum film previously reported. When deposited in the presence of oxygen, films of a reduced reflectance over the solar emission range result. If passivated and antireflected by a Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ layer, such Black … more

Controlled cadmium telluride thin films for solar cells applications. First quarterly report, June 1, 1980-September 1, 1980

Description: During the first quarter of this renewed program, efforts have been extended mainly to set up a new ion beam sputtering system that would replace our existing r.f. sputtering system for the fabrication of doped CdTe thin films for solar cell applications. Preliminary attempts with this new equipment resulted in films with rather large grain size (0.8..mu.. - 1..mu..m) at an elevated substrate temperature. While this in itself is encouraging, certain difficulties were confronted in achieving the… more
