Measurements of the Branching Fractions and CP Asymmetries of B -> D0_CP K Decays

Description: We present a study of the decay B{sup -} {yields} D{sub (CP)}{sup 0} K{sup -} and its charge conjugate, where D{sub (CP)}{sup 0} is reconstructed in CP-even, CP-odd, and non-CP flavor eigenstates, based on a sample of 232 million {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} storage ring. We measure the partial-rate charge asymmetries AC{sub CP{+-}} and the ratios R{sub CP{+-}} of the B {yields} D{sup 0} K decay branching fractions as measured in CP{+-} and non-CP D{sup 0} decays: A{sub CP+} = 0.35 {+-} 0.13(stat) {+-} 0.04(syst), A{sub CP-} = -0.06 {+-} 0.13(stat) {+-} 0.04(syst), R{sub CP+} = 0.90 {+-} 0.12(stat) {+-} 0.04(syst), R{sub CP-} = 0.86 {+-} 0.10(stat) {+-} 0.05(syst).

Observation of B^+\to\eta\rho^+ and Search for B^0 Decays to\eta^\prime\eta, \eta\pi^0, \eta^\prime\pi^0, and \omega\pi^0

Description: The authors present measurements of branching fractions for five B-meson decays to two-body charmless final states. The data, collected with the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, represent 459 million B{bar B} pairs. The results for branching fractions are, in units of 10{sup -6} (upper limits at 90% C.L.): {Beta}(B{sup +} {yields} {eta}{rho}{sup +}) = 9.9 {+-} 1.2 {+-} 0.8, {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} {eta}{prime}{eta}) = 0.5 {+-} 0.4 {+-} 0.1 (< 1.2), {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} {eta}{pi}{sup 0}) = 0.9 {+-} 0.4 {+-} 0.1 (< 1.5), {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} {eta}{prime}{pi}{sup 0}) = 0.9 {+-} 0.4 {+-} 0.1 (< 1.5), and {Beta}(B{sup 0}{sup 0} {yields} {omega}{pi}{sup 0}) = {eta}{rho}{sup +} mode, they measure the charge asymmetry {Alpha}{sub ch} (B{sup +} {yields} {eta}{rho}{sup +}) = 0.13 {+-} 0.11 {+-} 0.02.

Observation of e+e- Annihilations into the C=+1 Hadronic Final States \rho^0\rho^0 and \phi\rho^0

Description: The authors report the first observation of e{sup +}e{sup -} annihilations into states of positive C-parity, namely {rho}{sup 0}{rho}{sup 0} and {phi}{rho}{sup 0}. The two states are observed in the {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} and K{sup +}K{sup -} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} final states, respectively, in a data sample of 225 fb{sup -1} collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} storage rings at energies near {radical}s = 10.58 GeV. The distributions of cos {theta}*, where {theta}* is the center-of-mass polar angle of the {phi} meson or the forward {rho}{sup 0} meson, suggest production by two-virtual-photon annihilation. They measure cross sections within the range |cos {theta}*| < 0.8 of {sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} {rho}{sup 0} {rho}{sup 0}) = 20.7 {+-} 0.7(stat) {+-} 2.7(syst) fb and {sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} {phi}{rho}{sup 0}) = 5.7 {+-} 0.5(stat) {+-} 0.8(syst) fb.

Measurement of D^0-\overline{D^0} Mixing using the Ratio of Lifetimes for the Decays D^0 \to K^-\pi^+, K^-K^+, and \pi^-\pi^+

Description: The authors present a measurement of D{sup 0}-{bar D}{sup 0} mixing parameters using the ratios of lifetimes extracted from a sample of D{sup 0} mesons produced through the process D*{sup +} {yields} D{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}, that decay to K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}, I{sup -}K{sup +}, or {pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}. the Cabibbo-suppressed modes K{sup -}K{sup +} and {pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +} are compared to the Cabibbo-favored mode K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} to obtain a measurement of ycp, which in the limit of CP conservation corresponds to the mixing parameter y. The analysis is based on a data sample of 384 fb{sup -1} collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider. They obtain ycp = [1.24 {+-} 0.39(stat) {+-} 0.13(syst)]%, which is evidence of D{sup 0}-{bar D}{sup 0} mixing at the 3{sigma} level, and {Delta}Y = [-0.26 {+-} 0.36(stat) {+-} 0.08(syst)]%, where {Delta}Y constrains possible CP violation. Combining this result with a previous BABAR measurement of ycp obtained from a separate sample of D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup -}K{sup +} events, they obtain ycp = [1.03 {+-} 0.33(stat) {+-} 0.19(syst)]%.

Measurement of the B to Xs gammaBranching Fraction and Photon Energy Spectrum usingthe Recoil Method

Description: We present a measurement of the branching fraction and photon energy spectrum for the decay B {yields} X{sub s}{gamma} using data from the BABAR experiment. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 210 fb{sup -1}, from which approximately 680,000 B{bar B} events are tagged by a fully reconstructed hadronic decay of one of the B mesons. In the decay of the second B meson, an isolated high-energy photon is identified. We measure {Beta}(B {yields} X{sub s}{gamma}) = (3.66 {+-} 0.85{sub stat} {+-} 0.60{sub syst}) x 10{sup -4} for photon energies E{sub {gamma}} above 1.9 GeV in the B rest frame. From the measured spectrum we calculate the first and second moments for different minimum photon energies, which are used to extract the heavy-quark parameters m{sub b} and {mu}{sub {pi}}{sup 2}. In addition, measurements of the direct CP asymmetry and isospin asymmetry are presented.

Study of the Decay Ds+ to K+K-e+nu

Description: Using 214 fb{sup -1} of data recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEPII electron-positron collider, they study the decay D{sub s}{sup +} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}. Except for a small S-wave contribution, the events with K{sup +}K{sup -} masses in the range 1.01-1.03 GeV/c{sup 2} correspond to {phi} mesons. For D{sub s}{sup +} {yields} {phi}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e} decays, they measure the relative normalization of the Lorentz invariant form factors at q{sup 2} = 0, r{sub V} = V(0)/A{sub 1}(0) = 1.849 {+-} 0.060 {+-} 0.095, r{sub 2} = A{sub 2}(0)/A{sub 1}(0) = 0.763 {+-} 0.071 {+-} 0.065 and the pole mass of the axial-vector form factors m{sub A} = (2.28{sub -0.18}{sup +0.23} {+-} 0.18) GeV/c{sup 2}. Within the same K{sup +}K{sup -} mass range, they also measure the relative branching fractions {Beta}(D{sub s}{sup +} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e})/{Beta}(D{sub s}{sup +} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}) - 0.558 {+-} 0.007 {+-} 0.016, from which they obtain the total branching fraction {Beta}(D{sub s}{sup +} {yields} {phi}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}) = (2.61 {+-} 0.03 {+-} 0.08 {+-} 0.15) x 10{sup -2}. By comparing this value with the predicted decay rate, they extract A{sub 1}(0) = 0.607 {+-} 0.011 {+-} 0.019 {+-} 0.018. The stated uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and from external inputs.

Study of Rare B-Meson Decays Related to the CPObservable sin(2beta+gamma) at the BABAR Experiment

Description: This study reports the observation of the decays B{sup 0}{yields}D{sup (*)+}{sub S}{pi}{sup -} and B{sup 0}{yields}D{sup (*)-}K{sup +} in a sample of 230 x 10{sup 6} {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} storage ring, located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The branching fractions {beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +}{sub S}{pi}{sup -}) = (1.3 {+-} 0.3 (stat) {+-} 0.2 (syst)) x 10{sup -5}, {beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +}{sub S}K{sup +}) = (2.5 {+-} 0.4 (stat) {+-} 0.4 (syst)) x 10{sup -5}, {beta}(B{sup 0}{yields}D{sup (*)+}{sub S}{pi}{sup -}) = (2.8 {+-} 0.6 (stat) {+-} 0.5 (syst)) x 10{sup -5}, and {beta}(B{sup 0}{yields}D{sup (*)-}K{sup +}) = (2.0 {+-} 0.5 (stat) {+-} 0.4 (syst)) x 10{sup -5} are measured. The significance of the measurements to differ from zero are 5, 9, 6, and 5 standard deviations, respectively. This is a first observation of the decaysB{sup 0}{yields}D{sup (*)+}{sub S}{pi}{sup -} and B{sup 0}{yields}D{sup (*)-}K{sup +}. These results may potentially be useful in determining the CP asymmetry parameter sin(2{beta} + {gamma}) in the decays B{sup 0}{yields}D{sup (*)+}{sub S}{pi}{sup -}.

Search for Inclusive Charmless B to K+X and B to K0X Decays

Description: We present preliminary results from a search for inclusive charmless B {yields} KX decays. These decays occur dominantly via one-loop b {yields} s penguin transitions, and can provide useful information about these processes. Using a sample of 288.5 fb{sup -1} collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} B Factory at SLAC, we search for high-energy kaons recoiling against fully reconstructed B decays. We measure the partial branching fractions for kaons with momentum p*(K) > 2.34 GeV in the B rest frame, and obtain (in units of 10{sup -6}): {Beta}(B {yields} K{sup +}X, p* > 2.34 GeV) = 1.96{sub -34}{sup +37}(stat.){sub -30}{sup +31}(syst.) and {Beta}(B {yields} K{sup 0}X, p* > 2.34 GeV) = 154{sub -48}{sup +55}(stat.){sub -41}{sup +55}(syst.) Inclusive Rates and Spectra of the Lambda, Cascade, and Omega Hyperons atBaBar

Description: We employ Runs 1-4 off-peak data sample (about 21.5 fb{sup -1}) to produce the current world-best spectra and production rates measurements for three strangely-flavored baryons: the {Lambda} hyperon, the cascade hyperon, and the {Omega} hyperon. These improved measurements shall enable theoretical and phenomelogical workers to generate more realistic models for the hadronization process, currently one of the unresolved problem areas in the standard model of particle physics. This analysis was conducted using codes from release 16 series. We report the production rate at 10.54 GeV for the {Lambda} as 0.0900 {+-} 0.0006(stat.) {+-} 0.0039(sys.) per hadronic event. Our measured production rate at the same energy for the cascade hyperon is 0.00562 {+-} 0.00013(stat.) {+-} 0.00045(sys.) per hadronic event, while that for the {Omega} hyperon is 0.00027 {+-} 0.00004(stat.) {+-} 0.0008(sys.) per hadronic event. The spectral measurements for the respective particles also constitute current world-best measurements.

MEASUREMENTS OF DIRECT CP VIOLATION AND CONSTRAINT ON THE CKM TRIANGLE IN B->K*pi DECAYS

Description: We constrain the apex of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle with measurements of B {yields} K*{pi} amplitudes from analyses of B{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0} and B{sup 0} {yields} K{sub S}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} decays. This constraint is consistent with the world average. The B{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0} decay mode is reconstructed from a sample of 454 million B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} events collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC. We measure direct CP violation in B{sup 0} {yields} K*{sup +}{pi}{sup -} decays at the level of 3{sigma} when measurements from both B{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0} and B{sup 0} {yields} K{sub S}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} decays are combined.

Observation of B Meson Decays to omegaK* and Improved Measurements for omegarho and omegaf0

Description: We present measurements of B meson decays to the final states {omega}K*, {omega}{rho}, and {omega}f{sub 0}, where K* indicates a spin 0, 1, or 2 strange meson. The data sample corresponds to 465 x 10{sup 6} B{bar B} pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} collider at SLAC. B meson decays involving vector-scalar, vector-vector, and vector-tensor final states are analyzed; the latter two shed new light on the polarization of these final states. We measure the branching fractions for nine of these decays; five are observed for the first time. For most decays we also measure the charge asymmetry and, where relevant, the longitudinal polarization f{sub L}.

Measurement of Angle beta with Time-dependent CPAsymmetry in B0 to K+K-K0 Decays

Description: In the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, the phase of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark-mixing matrix [1, 2] is the only source of CP violation in the quark sector. Due to the interference between mixing and decay, this phase can be observed in measurements of time-dependent CP asymmetries of B{sup 0} mesons. In the SM, CP asymmetries in b {yields} s{bar s}s decays, such as B{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}K{sup 0}, are expected to be nearly equal to those observed in tree-dominated b {yields} {bar c}s decays [3]. However, because in the SM the former are dominated by loop amplitudes, new particles in those loops potentially introduce new physics at the same order as the SM process. Within the SM, deviations from the expected CP asymmetries in B{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}K{sup 0} decays depend on the Dalitz plot position, but are expected to be small and positive [4]. In particular, for the decay B{sup 0} {yields} {phi}K{sup 0} they are expected to be less than 4%. BABAR extracts the time-dependent CP-violation parameters by taking into account different amplitudes and phases across the B{sup 0} and {bar B}{sup 0} Dalitz plots, while Belle measures it separately for B{sup 0} {yields} {phi}K{sup 0} and the rest of K{sup +}K{sup -}K{sup 0} events, neglecting interference between intermediate states. The analyses presented here are based on 347 (535) million B{bar B} pairs collected with the BABAR (Belle) detector at the SLAC PEP-II (KEKB) e{sup +}e{sup -} asymmetric-energy collider. Data are collected on the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance, while a fraction of about 10% is collected at approximately 40 MeV below the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance, and it is used to study the background arising from e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} q{bar q} (q = u, d, s, c) continuum events. The BABAR and Belle detectors are ...

Top Quark Anomalous Couplings at the International Linear Collider

Description: We present a study of the experimental determination of the forward-backward asymmetry in the process e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} t{bar t} and in the subsequent t {yields} Wb decay, studied in the context of the International Linear Collider. This process probes the elementary couplings of the top quark to the photon, the Z and the W bosons at a level of precision that is difficult to achieve at hadron colliders. Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry requires excellent b quark identification and determination of the quark charge. The study reported here is performed in the most challenging all-hadronic channel e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} b{bar b}q{bar q}q{bar q}. It includes realistic details of the experimental environment, a full Monte Carlo simulation of the detector, based on the Silicon Detector concept, and realistic event reconstruction. The forward-backward asymmetries are determined to a precision of approximately 1% for each of two choices of beam polarization. We analyze the implications for the determination of the t{bar t}Z and Wt{bar b} couplings.

Measurements of e+e- to KKeta, KKpi0 and KsKpi CrossSections Using Initial State Radiation Events

Description: This paper reports measurements of processes: e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} {gamma}K{sup 0}{sub s}K{sup {+-}}{pi}{sup {+-}}, e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} {gamma}K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}, e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} {gamma}{phi}{eta} and e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} {gamma}{phi}{pi}{sup 0}. The initial state radiated photon allows to cover the hadronic final state in the energy range from thresholds up to {approx} 4.6 GeV. The overall size of the data sample analyzed is 232 fb{sup -1}, collected by the BABAR detector running at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} storage ring. From the Dalitz plot analysis of the K{sup 0}{sub s}K{sup {+-}}{pi}{sup {+-}} final state, moduli and relative phase of the isoscalar and the isovector components of the e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} KK*(892) cross section are determined. The cross section for the OZI-forbidden process e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} {phi}{pi}{sup 0} and the J/{psi} branching fractions to KK*(892) and K{sup +}K{sup -}{eta} are also measured.

Measurement of B -> D Form Factors in the Semileptonic Decay B -> D* l nu at BaBar

Description: We present here the results of a measurement of the three semileptonic form factors involved in the decay B{sup 0} {yields} D*{ell}{nu}, where {ell} is one of the two light charged leptons (i.e. an electron or muon--though the final results in this work are determined only for {ell} = electron). This measurement uses the Babar 2000-2002 data set, which is altogether approximately 85 x 10{sup 6} B{bar B}-pairs in 78 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity. The D*{sup +} was reconstructed in the channel D*{sup +} {yields} D{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}, and the D{sup 0} in the channel D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}. This analysis was based ultimately on {approx} 16,386 reconstructed events with an estimated background contamination of {approx} 15%. The method of the measurement was to perform a unbinned maximum likelihood fit in the four kinematic variables that describe the decay for the three form factor parameters R{sub 1}, R{sub 2}, and {rho}{sup 2}. The results obtained for the form factor ratios are R{sub 1} = 1.328 {+-} 0.055 {+-} 0.025 {+-} 0.025 and R{sub 2} = 0.920 {+-} 0.044 {+-} 0.020 {+-} 0.013 for the ratios and {rho}{sup 2} = 0.769 {+-} 0.039 {+-} 0.019 {+-} 0.032 for the form factor slope. The errors given are statistical, Monte Carlo statistical and systematic respectively.

Study of B Meson Decays with Excited eta and eta-prime Mesons

Description: Using 383 million B{bar B} pairs from the BABAR data sample, they report results for branching fractions of six charged B-meson decay modes, where a charged kaon recoils against a charmless resonance decaying to K{bar K}* or {eta}{pi}{pi} final states with mass in the range (1.2-1.8) GeV/c{sup 2}. They observe a significant enhancement at the low K{bar K}* invariant mass which is interpreted as B{sup +} {yields} {eta}(1475)K{sup +}, find evidence for the decay B{sup +} {yields} {eta}(1295)K{sup +}, and place upper limits on the decays B{sup +} {yields} {eta}(1405)K{sup +}, B{sup +} {yields} f{sub 1}(1285)K{sup +}, B{sup +} {yields} f{sub 1}(1420)K{sup +}, and B{sup +} {yields} {phi}(1680)K{sup +}.

Measurement of CP Parameters in B- --> D(pi+pi-pi0)K- and Study of the X(3872) in B --> J/psi pi+ pi- K with the BaBar Detector

Description: This dissertation presents two analyses performed on data collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} asymmetric-energy B Factory. First, a Dalitz analysis is shown that performs the first measurement of CP violation parameters in the decay B{sup -} {yields} D{sub {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}}K{sup -} using the decay rate asymmetry and D{sup 0} - {bar D}{sup 0} interference. The results can be used to further constrain the value of the CKM angle {gamma}. The second analysis studies the properties of the X(3872) in neutral and charged B {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}K decays. Measurements of the branching ratio and mass are presented as well as the search for additional resonances at higher masses.
