Taguchi methods applied to oxygen-enriched diesel engine experiments

Description: This paper describes a test series conducted on a six-cylinder diesel engine to study the impacts of controlled factors (i.e., oxygen content of the combustion air, water content of the fuel, fuel rate, and fuel-injection timing) on engine emissions using Taguchi methods. Three levels of each factor were used in the tests. Only the main effects of the factors were examined; no attempt was made to analyze the interactions among the factors. It was found that, as in the case of the single-cylinde… more

Handling effluent from nuclear thermal propulsion system ground tests

Description: A variety of approaches for handling effluent from nuclear thermal propulsion system ground tests in an environmentally acceptable manner are discussed. The functional requirements of effluent treatment are defined and concept options are presented within the framework of these requirements. System concepts differ primarily in the choice of fission-product retention and waste handling concepts. Motor vehicle fuel economy, the forgotten HC control stragegy. [Hydrocarbon (HC)]

Description: Emissions of hydrocarbons from motor vehicles are recognized as major contributors to ozone pollution in urban areas. Petroleum-based motor fuels contain volatile organic compounds (VOC) which, together with oxides of nitrogen, promote the formation of ozone in the troposphere via complex photochemical reactions. VOC emissions from the tailpipe and evaporation from the fuel and engine systems of highway vehicles are believed to account for about 40% of total VOC emissions in any region. But mot… more

Engine data measurement system. [Pouliot variable displacement engine]

Description: The data measurement and reduction system for the Pouliot variable displacement engine uses a Hewlett Packard 2114A minicomputer. The raw data are processed to compute the horsepower, air-fuel ratio, equivalence ratio, brake specific fuel consumption, and brake specific emissions of unburned hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, and carbon monoxide. Emissions are checked for consistency by applying the chemical equilibrium theory of Spindt.

Automotive powerplant evaluation

Description: A program to obtain automotive engine performance data for use in estimating vehicle emission and fuel economy in varied service and duty is described. An experimental test procedure for generating fuel consumption and emissions data adequate to characterize an engine over its full operating range was developed for steady-state tests. The development of a test procedure for transient testing is currently under way. The steady-state data will be collected from approximately 23 different engines,… more

Valve timing: its effect on emissions and fuel economy

Description: The effects of valve timing on exhaust emissions and fuel consumption were investigated experimentally. Emission control through the use of varied valve timing compared to conventional emissions control hardware was documented along with the effects of valve timing on emissions. Fuel consumption trends with changed valve timing were determined. The engine design of the test vehicle allowed independent adjustment of intake and exhaust valve timing. Emissions and fuel consumption were determined … more

Description: The contribution of lubrication oil to particulate matter (PM) emissions from a Cummins B5.9 Diesel engine was measured using accelerator mass spectrometry to trace carbon isotope concentrations. The engine operated at fixed medium load (285 N-m (210 ft.lbs.) at 1600 rpm) used 100% biodiesel fuel (8100) with a contemporary carbon-14 ({sup 14}C) concentration of 103 amol {sup 14}C mg C. The {sup 14}C concentration of the exhaust CO{sub 2} and PM were 102 and 99 amol {sup 14}C/mg C, respectively.… more

Evaluation of Aftermarket Fuel Delivery Systems for Natural Gas and Lpg Vehicles

Description: This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of aftermarket fuel delivery systems for vehicles fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Most of the CNG and LPG vehicles studied were converted to the alternative fuel after purchase. There are wide variations in the quality of the conversion hardware and the installation. This leads to questions about the overall quality of the converted vehicles, in terms of emissions, safety, and performance. There is a… more
