Radiological assessment report for the Lansdowne property, 105-107 East Stratford Avenue, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, October-December 1984

Description: Areas with elevated levels of radioactivity were found throughout both residences, as well as on the surrounding property. Contamination was also found in the garage behind the 105 East structure. The 105 East residence had substantially more contamination than the 107 East residence, as was expected. The chimneys, particularly the rear chimney, from the 105 East residence had extensive contamination, indicating that contaminated materials may have been burned at the site. The high background r… more

Liquid helium dump concept for a large scale superconducting magnetic energy storage plant

Description: Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) is a potentially cost effective technology for electric utility load leveling. Design concepts and cost estimates of SMES plants capable of delivering 5000 MWh daily have been previously identified. An important feature of a large commercial plant is a system that will reliably shut down the magnet by thermally dissipating the stored energy in the event of an imminent or actual loss of superconductivity. To prevent damage to the coil during such a … more

Control of indoor radon and radon progeny concentrations

Description: There are three general categories of techniques for the control of radon and radon progeny concentrations in indoor air - restriction of radon entry, reduction of indoor radon concentrations by ventilation or air cleaning, and removal of airborne radon progeny. The predominant radon entry process in most residences appears to be pressure driven flow of soil gas through cracks or other openings in the basement, slab, or subfloor. Sealing these openings or ventilation of the subslab or subfloor … more

Heavy ion induced transfer reactions: a spectroscopic tool for high spin states

Description: By selectively choosing the appropriate heavy ion transfer reaction one can access high spin states. As a demonstration of the technique two proton and two neutron states of high spin (both yrast and non-yrast) in Nd nuclei have been identified. These spectroscopic results have yielded the first direct information about the configuration of some of these states. 11 refs., 6 figs. (WRF)

Actinide production in /sup 136/Xe bombardments of /sup 249/Cf

Description: The production cross sections for the actinide products from /sup 136/Xe bombardments of /sup 249/Cf at energies 1.02, 1.09, and 1.16 times the Coulomb barrier were determined. Fractions of the individual actinide elements were chemically separated from recoil catcher foils. The production cross sections of the actinide products were determined by measuring the radiations emitted from the nuclides within the chemical fractions. The chemical separation techniques used in this work are described … more

Waste migration studies at the Savannah River Plant burial ground

Description: The low-level radioactive waste burial ground at the Savannah River Plant is a typical shallow-land-burial disposal site in a humid region. Studies of waste migration at this site provide generic data for designing other disposal facilities. A program of field, laboratory, and modeling studies for the SRP burial ground has been conducted for several years. Recent results of lysimeter tests, soil-water chemistry studies, and transport modeling are reported. The lysimeter experiments include ongo… more

Evolution of nuclear shapes at high spins

Description: The dynamic electric quadrupole (E2) moments are a direct reflection of the collective aspects of the nuclear wave functions. For this, Doppler-shift lifetime measurements have been done utilizing primarily the recoil-distance technique. The nuclei with neutron number N approx. 90 possess many interesting properties. These nuclei have very shallow minima in their potential energy surfaces, and thus, are very susceptible to deformation driving influences. It is the evolution of nuclear shapes as… more

Unfolded ANO-1 fluxes using the LEPRICON methodology. [Least-squares EPRI CONsolidation]

Description: Calculated fluxes at a one-quarter depth midplane location in the pressure vessel of the ANO-1 reactor were adjusted using the LEPRICON methodology. The adjustment was based on the LEPRICON benchmark database in combination with the ANO-1 cavity activation measurements. The LEPRICON database has been expanded and now also includes the PSF field, of which the analysis has been recently completed. The measured, calculated and adjusted ANO-1 activations are presented together with their correspond… more

Overview of polarization in intermediate energy nucleon-nucleus inelastic scattering

Description: The general role that polarization transfer (PT) can play in the ''dissection'' of medium-energy N-nucleus inelastic reactions is reviewed, specifically concentrating on the importance of complete sets of PT observables for the study of nuclear structure. The discussion is largely in the context of plane-wave impulse approximations, with the effects of distortions considered through comparisons between simple plane-wave predictions and DWIA computations. 31 refs., 11 figs. Discovery of /sup 260/Md and the decay properties of /sup 258/Fm, /sup 258m,g/Md, and /sup 259/Md

Description: We have discovered a new neutron-rich isotope, /sup 260/Md, from /sup 18/O and /sup 22/Ne bombardments of /sup 254/Es. We observed a spontaneous-fission (SF) activity with a 32-day half-life in electromagnetically separated mass-260 fractions from these bombardments and we have measured the mass and kinetic energy distributions of this SF activity. The mass distribution was symmetric with the principal energy peak at 234-MeV total kinetic energy (TKE), similar to previous observations for heavy… more

High-spin properties of some nuclei around A = 160

Description: Two new types of behavior have been observed in /sup 156/Er. The first is a terminating band ending on a 42+ fully aligned state. The second is a strong cross feeding among four negative parity bands, due most likely to a severe reduction or collapse of the neutron pairing. In /sup 158/Er we have found two sequences feeding the 38+ level; one slow and one fast. This suggests that some feeding goes through regions of oblate (or nearly so) shapes, and some does not. Lifetimes have been determined… more

Information on nuclear shapes at high spins from lifetime measurements

Description: Using Doppler shift techniques, lifetimes of high spin states have been measured in a number of nuclei near N-90 in order to get their dynamic electric quadrupole moments, which are a direct reflection of the collective aspects of the nuclear wave functions. The potential energy surfaces of /sup 160/Yb (N = 90) reveal that it is very shallow in the ..gamma.. degree of freedom as well as in epsilon/sub 2/ and thus should be susceptible to deformation driving influences. Quadrupole transition mom… more

B(E2)up arrow for the 2/sub 1//sup +/ states of nuclei off the line of stability

Light mass elements total half-lives for selected long-lived nuclides

Description: In the past, many compilations and evaluations of half-lives have been made which have uncritically accepted authors' values and uncertainties. They have merely recommended weight-averaged reported results. This evaluation attempts to reanalyze each experiment in the literature including an estimate of the standard deviation utilizing, where possible, an estimate of the systematic error. This paper constitutes a preliminary step in the process of recommending values. The long-lived nuclides of … more
